Almost 2000 years ago Christ sat around the table with His disciples to share the passover meal.
This Passover Meal was different though, and non of them seemed to realize what was about to happen
This Passover Meal there was a shadow that hung over the atmosphere that night, The shadow of the Cross
When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.”
After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”
In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.
Jesus redefined what Passover really meant, while the Israelites were in Egypt they had to but the blood of the Lamb over their doors so that they would be saved, as the Angel passed over to kill the first born.
The Blood of the lamb would save them, likewise, Jesus is the Lamb of God and His blood saves us.
This night, this last night that Jesus was spending with His disciples, as He was not giving just some cool metaphor but a preview to what was about to take place.
See before the nails pierced His hands, Jesus placed the bread in theirs, because the Last Supper points us directly to the Cross
Because at the cross His Body was broken for us
In Isaiah we see that why He had to go through this
Surely he took up our pain
and bore our suffering,
yet we considered him punished by God,
stricken by him, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
When we take the bread, we are remembering not just a story, but the bodily sacrifice of Christ.
Every time we hold that small piece of bread, it is a silent sermon of the body that was offered on our behalf
His Blood Was Poured Out for Us and our sins
Blood meant death. In the Old Testament, blood sealed covenants and brought atonement.
Jesus’ blood starts a New Covenant—one not built on law but grace.
The cup is not just about remembrance—it is about redemption.
On the cross, Jesus cried, “It is finished.” The debt was paid in blood.
communion is not a reenactment of the crucifixion—but it is a participation in its benefits
Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ?
See This table Leads Us Back to the cross
Lets take a couple of minutes and reflect on the sacrifice that Christ made on the cross, a sacrifice that saved us from the slavery of sin and saved us from an eternity in hell
We all want fairness, but iff we got what we deserved, we would all be going to Hell apart from God, but the cross is not fair, it’s not fair because Christ took what we deserve and took it on himself so that we could have a relationship with Him.
Lord’s Table
Lord’s Table
Jesus on the cross says “It Is Finished” this goes deeper than I ever thought
The night that Jesus was sitting around a table sharing in the passover meal did something odd.
See there are 4 cups they are
The Cup of Sanctification. “I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.”
The Cup of Deliverance. “I will rescue you from their bondage.”
The Cup of Redemption. “I will redeem you with an outstretched arm.”
The Cup of Praise. “I will take you as My people.”
The odd thing was is when He got to the Cup of redemption, the 3d cup he told them that the bread was His Body and the Wine was His Blood,
his body that is broken
and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.”
His Blood for the forgiveness of our sins
This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
We have redemption because of Him
The cup of the redemption is communion
But, Jesus does something again out of character for a Jewish person, He skips the 4th cup, Why do He do this?? He did not skip it we read in John 19 when He took it
Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
The cup of Praise, the I will take you as my people, Jesus took the 4th cup on the cross and then bowed His head. as the Passover Lamb.
The wild part of this for me was the fact that they used a Hyssop plant to give it to him
Take a bunch of hyssop, dip it into the blood in the basin and put some of the blood on the top and on both sides of the doorframe. None of you shall go out of the door of your house until morning.
The Israelites used this plant in the 1st Passover
Jesus said this is wine is my blood, and then they dipped the hyssop branch in the wine. and they Jesus said it is finished.
And now we are going to take part in the 3rd cup together.
and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
