After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

If “it” is finished we have to ask the question, “What is ‘it’?”
Jesus did not say “I am finished.” He said IT is finished:
The OT Prophecies Concerning Jesus’ Life, Ministry & Death were Finished
The OT Prophecies Concerning Jesus’ Life, Ministry & Death were Finished
Someone said:
“All prophecies, symbols, and foreshadowings of the coming Messiah, detailed from Genesis to Malachi, were fulfilled by Jesus’ life, ministry, and death on the cross.”
The Work the Father Gave Him to Do was Finished
The Work the Father Gave Him to Do was Finished
Jesus had already said this was done in...
I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.
The Atonement was Finished

The phrase “it is finished” is actually one word in the Greek language: TETELESTAI.

The verb tense that Jesus used to testify “IT IS FINISHED” is significant as well. The translators did not say:
It was finished
It will be finished
It might be finished
It could be finished
Rather they translated it as: IT IS FINISHED!
TETELESTAI is in the PERFECT TENSE. It signifies a COMPLETED ACTION that has ONGOING RESULTS!
In other words, it’s not just a past event that has past consequences, but it is a PAST EVENT that has PERMANENT CONSEQUENCES!
The redemption that Jesus provided HAS BEEN ACCOMPLISHED!

Finished
What a word!
Jesus said, “It IS FINISHED”
He didn’t say it is ALMOST finished
He didn’t say it is 99% finished
He didn’t say it will be finished
He said it IS FINISHED!
There is nothing I can take away from what Jesus accomplished
There is nothing I can add to what Jesus accomplished
IT IS FINISHED!
A crown of thorns, a rugged tree,
The weight of sin, for you and me.
No halfway work, no debt unpaid,
The Savior spoke, the price was laid.
Not “I am finished,” weak with loss,
But “It is finished” — on the cross!
Prophets dreamed it, God designed it,
Christ fulfilled it, none can bind it.
The veil was torn, the curse undone,
The fight was fought, the war was won.
Our shame erased, our hope restored,
By one bold word from Christ our Lord.
Tetelestai — the debt is gone,
The night is past, the dawn has come.
Forever finished, sealed in grace,
We stand redeemed before His face.
