1 Shout for joy to God, all the earth;
2 sing the glory of his name; give to him glorious praise!
3 Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds! So great is your power that your enemies come cringing to you.
4 All the earth worships you and sings praises to you; they sing praises to your name.” Selah
5 Come and see what God has done: he is awesome in his deeds toward the children of man.
6 He turned the sea into dry land; they passed through the river on foot. There did we rejoice in him,
1 Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb.
2 And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it.
3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow.
4 And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men.
5 But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified.
6 He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.
3 observations from the text…
Come and see the power of God.
Come and see the power of God.
There was a great earthquake.
I love this!
I would have done Christmas different
Think about it
The one who spoke the universe into existence
The King of Kings and Lord of Lords
The Alpha and Omega
The beginning and the end
The great God – there is none like Him
Remember this was a plan laid out before the foundation of the world
Now the time was just right
4 But when the fullness of time came, God sent out his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,
Come and see the power of God.
Come and see the power of God.
And very quietly the Son of God became flesh
He was born in a cold stinky barn
The world was too busy to know He was there
I would have rolled back the sky
I would have lit up the world with more than one little star
Everyone would have known I was there to be the hero and save them!
But it wasn’t part of God’s plan.
And Jesus is born quietly in the night as a helpless baby
And begins to grow
Some 33 years later He is being unfairly tried.
God still doesn’t show the world His power.
They made fun of Him.
They told Him to prove He was who He said He was.
They told Jesus to come down off the cross.
This is the man SPOKE and sea was calm
This is the man that SPOKE Lazarus back from the dead
With on little word and it could have been over.
They could have been dead
The world could have been destroyed.
Whatever judgement on sin God wanted to pour out.
He already flooded the earth.
He already rained fire down on Sodom an Gomorrah.
But it wasn’t part of God’s plan
Then three days and three nights of silence.
This is it! The power of God on display!
This is what we have been waiting for, for 30 plus years!
God is finally showing His power
2 And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it.
3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow.
4 And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men.
Come and see the power of God.
Come and see the power of God.
Not only was there an earth quake, but an angel appeared and rolled the stone away and sat on it.
I don’t want to miss this
The stone
This was not a small stone
It could have weighed 1-2 ton
It would have been impossible for the ladies to move
Would have taken several men
The angel
The angels rolls the stone away and then sits on it.
Why did the angel roll the stone away?
So we could see in
Jesus was already gone
He did not need the stone rolled away
Just a little while later he walked through the walls of the upper room
God wanted us to see what He had done.
The guards.
There were several elite Roman soldiers.
Not much scared these guys but this did.
Why now?
4 and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,
Come and see the power of God.
Come and see the power of God.
The Old Testament prophesied and foreshadowed Christ.
All His miracles were signs.
But the resurrection was the proof.
Not only that…
54 …“Death is swallowed up in victory.”
55 “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”
56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.
Come and hear the message from God.
Come and hear the message from God.
5 But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified.
6 He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.
These are the first words they’ve heard from God since the cross.
Remember Jesus’ followers didn’t completely understand what was happening.
30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
Come and hear the message from God.
Come and hear the message from God.
“It is finishished” – Tetelestai
It is accomplished
My life’s work is complete
All that was planned
To take the sins of the world
To satisfy sin’s demand
It was complete
Warren Wiersbe said the best definition was the one used by merchants meaning: “the debt was paid in full.”
Darkness covered the earth in the middle of the day then silence from God.
Their faith was tested.
Some were discouraged.
Nothing for 3 days.
There’s nothing to be afraid of.
That message continues because of the resurrection.
We see “Fear not” over 100 times .
The concept of not fearing over 365 times.
“He is not here. He has risen just as He said.”
This is the best news!
This is why there is no need for fear.
God is who He said He was.
In the hours of silence you wondered if He really was God
You questioned yourself for following Him
Now here is your proof! He is not HERE
JESUS IS NOT DEAD
25 Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.
Come and see the glory of God.
Come and see the glory of God.
He took our place on the cross for our sin.
21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Come and hear the message from God.
Come and hear the message from God.
Christ emerged from the grave victorious.
He is the victor over sin.
He satisfied sin’s demands.
He pulls us out of sins control.
He can wipe our record clean.
This is not a one day thing.
We do not live a life of victory when the resurrection is a one day thing in our lives.
If you came because its Easter, we are glad to have you, but come see what God has done for you!
Don’t miss the relationship you can have with Him.
The resurrection has daily implications in our lives.
10 Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the Lord.
11 Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart!
