Introduction

Today is a day that is pivotal to the history of our world and our faith. A day that turned the world on end. On Friday evening we spent time reading the word and reflecting on the King of the Jews. This was the charge that Pilot put above his head on the cross that would be the method of Jesus’ sacrifice for men. The final sacrificial Lamb would died on the cross, as he yelled out is is finished.
And today It is Sunday morning, a tension and a heavy burden resides over the disciples of Jesus. Feelings of fear, confusion, guilt, sadness, anger, and many other emotions fill their minds. One week ago on the previous Sunday they followed their friend, teacher, Lord and who they believed to be the Messiah into the city of Jerusalem. They watched in wonder and anticipation as the crowds shouted Hosanna, Hosanna. How they pronounced him as King.
Early in the week they saw him perform miracles, cleanse the temple, weep for the people, confound the religious leaders. They watched and waited in great anticipation of Jesus taking his place as King.
As Thursday rolled around they spent their time preparing for the Passover meal and enjoyed the passover meal. During the meal, he washed their feet, predicts his betrayal and that they will be scattered and prays for them. Jesus breaks bread with them and speaks of the new covenant that is in his blood. Concern and confusion starts to set in as Jesus speaks in ways that they are not understanding. He goes to pray and is arrested by the Religious Leaders and he willingly goes with them. Peter denies Christ for the first time.
Through out the night the trials of Jesus begin and at dawn Peter is broken as he denies his Lord for the third time before the rooster crows. As Good Friday continues they watched from a distance as Jesus is taken through the remainder of 7 different trials. They ask for information speak amongst themselves to understand what is going on. They see their friend scourged and beaten and hurt in unimaginable ways. They see the city turn on Him and yell Crucify Him. They know he is innocent “How can this be happening?”
While many of the discipled flee to hidden places, few watch in horror as Jesus and his cross go to the place called the Skull. With each bang of the hammer, each scream of pain their hearts sink deeper and deeper. They watch the brutal torture of Jesus as he hangs on the cross. Earth quakes, darkness come and then he breathed his last breath.
His body is taken down wrapped in linen and buried.
Saturday comes, it is the Sabbath.
I can only imagine what went through their thoughts as they honored the Sabbath and sought God. As they prepare what what the next week will bring. As hope isn’t in the front of their minds any more. Then Sunday comes.
There must have been a huge weight and quietness to the disciples this morning. The entire time must have been like being in another world, a time of grief and sorrow and unbelief that Jesus has died. Not knowing what to do they continue with the burial customs.
Luke 24:1–12 CSB
1 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb. 3 They went in but did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men stood by them in dazzling clothes. 5 So the women were terrified and bowed down to the ground. “Why are you looking for the living among the dead?” asked the men. 6He is not here, but he has risen! Remember how he spoke to you when he was still in Galilee, 7 saying, ‘It is necessary that the Son of Man be betrayed into the hands of sinful men, be crucified, and rise on the third day’8 And they remembered his words. 9 Returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the Eleven and to all the rest. 10 Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them were telling the apostles these things. 11 But these words seemed like nonsense to them, and they did not believe the women. 12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. When he stooped to look in, he saw only the linen cloths. So he went away, amazed at what had happened.
He is risen!!! Three simple words with profound impact. He is Risen!!!
And they remembered his words. They start to think back and piece together that fact that the tomb was empty. But they still were not getting it all pulled together until Jesus reveals himself to them alive.
Luke 24:36–49 CSB
36 As they were saying these things, he himself stood in their midst. He said to them, “Peace to you!” 37 But they were startled and terrified and thought they were seeing a ghost. 38 “Why are you troubled?” he asked them. “And why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself! Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.” 40 Having said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 But while they still were amazed and in disbelief because of their joy, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42 So they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate in their presence. 44 He told them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. 46 He also said to them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead the third day, 47 and repentance for forgiveness of sins will be proclaimed in his name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 And look, I am sending you what my Father promised. As for you, stay in the city until you are empowered from on high.”

Scripture Fulfilled

Throughout his time with them Jesus would foretell of his death and resurrection. They struggled to understand what he ment So Jesus tenderly sits and explains and opens their minds to understand the scriptures. They now understand his reaction to Peter’s rebuke of Jesus.
Matthew 16:21–23 CSB
21 From then on Jesus began to point out to his disciples that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day. 22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, “Oh no, Lord! This will never happen to you!” 23 Jesus turned and told Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me because you’re not thinking about God’s concerns but human concerns.”
They remembered when he spoke about the temple and they began to understand.
John 2:19–22 CSB
19 Jesus answered, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it up in three days.” 20 Therefore the Jews said, “This temple took forty-six years to build, and will you raise it up in three days?” 21 But he was speaking about the temple of his body. 22 So when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the statement Jesus had made.
The resurrected Jesus would continue to reveal himself to many people before eventually ascending into heaven. The Apostels ministry was centered on the fact that He has Risen.
Acts 4:33 CSB
33 With great power the apostles were giving testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was on all of them.
He sat and continued to teach until he ascended into heaven and he would continue to pass on his ministry of reconciliation and salvation to his disciples. He would pass on the Gospel that was to be taken to all of the nations. This would be the Commission to go and make disciples of all the nations baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Paul would write

Mission Given

1 Corinthians 15:3–8 CSB
3 For I passed on to you as most important what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve. 6 Then he appeared to over five hundred brothers and sisters at one time; most of them are still alive, but some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as to one born at the wrong time, he also appeared to me.
The Resurrection is a central part to our salvation. It was foretold in the scriptures. When you really start to get into the Old Testament you will be amazed by the constant pointing forward to the death and resurrection of the Messiah. Paul would speak of his own salvation as dependent on the resurrection of Jesus. He would stand before King Agrippa and speak of Jesus being the first to rise from the dead.
Acts 26:12–23 CSB
12 “I was traveling to Damascus under these circumstances with authority and a commission from the chief priests. 13 King Agrippa, while on the road at midday, I saw a light from heaven brighter than the sun, shining around me and those traveling with me. 14 We all fell to the ground, and I heard a voice speaking to me in Aramaic, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.’ 15 “I asked, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ “And the Lord replied, ‘I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting. 16 But get up and stand on your feet. For I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint you as a servant and a witness of what you have seen and will see of me. 17 I will rescue you from your people and from the Gentiles. I am sending you to them 18 to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a share among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’ 19 “So then, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision. 20 Instead, I preached to those in Damascus first, and to those in Jerusalem and in all the region of Judea, and to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works worthy of repentance. 21 For this reason the Jews seized me in the temple and were trying to kill me. 22 To this very day, I have had help from God, and I stand and testify to both small and great, saying nothing other than what the prophets and Moses said would take place—23 that the Messiah would suffer, and that, as the first to rise from the dead, he would proclaim light to our people and to the Gentiles.”
Paul would simply state he communicated nothing more than what the prophets and Moses said would take place. That the Messiah would suffer and be the first to raise from the dead. The apostles wrote that without the resurrection there is no salvation, no faith.
1 Corinthians 15:12–19 CSB
12 Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say, “There is no resurrection of the dead”? 13 If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised; 14 and if Christ has not been raised, then our proclamation is in vain, and so is your faith. 15 Moreover, we are found to be false witnesses about God, because we have testified wrongly about God that he raised up Christ—whom he did not raise up, if in fact the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins. 18 Those, then, who have fallen asleep in Christ have also perished. 19 If we have put our hope in Christ for this life only, we should be pitied more than anyone.
This what Paul would testify too. Without out Christ being raised from the dead there is not hope for us. But thankfully because of his perfect sinless life, and by the power of God death could not hold him
Acts 2:24–32 CSB
24 God raised him up, ending the pains of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by death. 25 For David says of him: I saw the Lord ever before me; because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. 26 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices. Moreover, my flesh will rest in hope, 27 because you will not abandon me in Hades or allow your holy one to see decay. 28 You have revealed the paths of life to me; you will fill me with gladness in your presence. 29 “Brothers and sisters, I can confidently speak to you about the patriarch David: He is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Since he was a prophet, he knew that God had sworn an oath to him to seat one of his descendants on his throne. 31 Seeing what was to come, he spoke concerning the resurrection of the Messiah: He was not abandoned in Hades, and his flesh did not experience decay. 32 “God has raised this Jesus; we are all witnesses of this.
The resurrection is a complete demonstration of God’s power.
Ephesians 1:18–21 CSB
18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened so that you may know what is the hope of his calling, what is the wealth of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the mighty working of his strength. 20 He exercised this power in Christ by raising him from the dead and seating him at his right hand in the heavens—21 far above every ruler and authority, power and dominion, and every title given, not only in this age but also in the one to come.
This is the power of God. That he would send his son to die on behalf of sinners and raise him from the dead to seat him in the highest place of authority on the throne a king. This is the symbol of baptism that we proclaim every time someone is baptized.
Colossians 2:11–12 CSB
11 You were also circumcised in him with a circumcision not done with hands, by putting off the body of flesh, in the circumcision of Christ, 12 when you were buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.
If Christ never left the tomb, if he never conquered death then there would be no life for us. We are united in his death and in his Resurrection. The resurrection we profess is the foundation of our faith.
1 Peter 1:21 CSB
21 Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
John 11:25–26 CSB
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me, even if he dies, will live. 26 Everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
It is how we are justified.
Romans 4:25 CSB
25 He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.
It is our Hope.
Romans 8:11 CSB
11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, then he who raised Christ from the dead will also bring your mortal bodies to life through his Spirit who lives in you.
The same power that raised Jesus will raise us as well.
1 Corinthians 6:14 CSB
14 God raised up the Lord and will also raise us up by his power.
Raised with Jesus
2 Corinthians 4:14 CSB
14 For we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you.
Living Hope
1 Peter 1:3–4 CSB
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead 4 and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you.
He was the first of many
1 Corinthians 15:20–22 CSB
20 But as it is, Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead also comes through a man. 22 For just as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.
This is the simplicity of the message. There is so much added to the message of the cross and resurrection today.

New Life

It is the source of our new life
Romans 6:1–14 CSB
1 What should we say then? Should we continue in sin so that grace may multiply? 2 Absolutely not! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Or are you unaware that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we were buried with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in the likeness of his death, we will certainly also be in the likeness of his resurrection. 6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be rendered powerless so that we may no longer be enslaved to sin, 7 since a person who has died is freed from sin. 8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him, 9 because we know that Christ, having been raised from the dead, will not die again. Death no longer rules over him. 10 For the death he died, he died to sin once for all time; but the life he lives, he lives to God. 11 So, you too consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, so that you obey its desires. 13 And do not offer any parts of it to sin as weapons for unrighteousness. But as those who are alive from the dead, offer yourselves to God, and all the parts of yourselves to God as weapons for righteousness. 14 For sin will not rule over you, because you are not under the law but under grace.
Seek the things above.
Colossians 3:1 CSB
1 So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
Our Goal in this new life.
Philippians 3:8–11 CSB
8 More than that, I also consider everything to be a loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. Because of him I have suffered the loss of all things and consider them as dung, so that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own from the law, but one that is through faith in Christ—the righteousness from God based on faith. 10 My goal is to know him and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of his sufferings, being conformed to his death, 11 assuming that I will somehow reach the resurrection from among the dead.
Equipped
Hebrews 13:20–21 CSB
20 Now may the God of peace, who brought up from the dead our Lord Jesus—the great Shepherd of the sheep—through the blood of the everlasting covenant, 21 equip you with everything good to do his will, working in us what is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.
To Produce Fruit
Romans 7:4 CSB
4 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, you also were put to death in relation to the law through the body of Christ so that you may belong to another. You belong to him who was raised from the dead in order that we may bear fruit for God.

Conclusion

The disciples witnessed the great display of God’s power. From his baptism, through his ministry, as he entered Jerusalem on the colt. They watched him hang on the cross, and were there when the tomb was found empty. They saw the risen Lord and lived to tell the world about him. Today we get to see at that they saw and more. After 2000 plus years we have the same mission and Christ is still calling people to himself through the testimony that he dies for our sins and was raised on the third day conquering death and giving us new life.
It is the motive of our mind, the affection of our heart, and the work of our hands.
All of it is for the Glory of God and God alone.
Isaiah 48:11 CSB
11 I will act for my own sake, indeed, my own, for how can I be defiled? I will not give my glory to another.
And all of those that call on his name will be glorified with him in heaven.
Romans 8:29–30 CSB
29 For those he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. 30 And those he predestined, he also called; and those he called, he also justified; and those he justified, he also glorified.
AS he has rescued sinners from the dominion of darkness and transferred into the kingdom.
Colossians 1:13–14 CSB
13 He has rescued us from the domain of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of the Son he loves. 14 In him we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
Brothers and sisters we have much to rejoice about today. If you have not come to this place of confession and faith.
Romans 10:9 CSB
9 If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Prayer
Benediction
Hebrews 13:20–21 CSB
20 Now may the God of peace, who brought up from the dead our Lord Jesus—the great Shepherd of the sheep—through the blood of the everlasting covenant, 21 equip you with everything good to do his will, working in us what is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.
