getting tickets for arcade games…
it always cost way more than you think to get them
100 tickets and you can get this amazing toy… you spend the amount in quarters it would cost to get the toy and your only 1/4 of the way there in tickets to get the toy
at some point you think … I am not sure the fun in the games is worth it
Series recap
last week - The Coming King
Jesus came humbly on a donkey
to rescue his bride
Friday night - The Stricken King
in his passive obedience Jesus went to the cross
taking our guilt and shame
Today - The Risen King
continuing to look at the prophecy of the messiah
Isaiah not only told us that the servant would come and suffer
but that his days would be extended
Isaiah 53:9–12 CSB
9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked, but he was with a rich man at his death, because he had done no violence and had not spoken deceitfully. 10 Yet the Lord was pleased to crush him severely. When you make him a guilt offering, he will see his seed, he will prolong his days, and by his hand, the Lord’s pleasure will be accomplished. 11 After his anguish, he will see light and be satisfied. By his knowledge, my righteous servant will justify many, and he will carry their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will give him the many as a portion, and he will receive the mighty as spoil, because he willingly submitted to death, and was counted among the rebels; yet he bore the sin of many and interceded for the rebels.
PRAY!
In the same way that his death was foretold, so was his resurrection. He died because of our sin, but we are his prize and he absolutely thinks it was worth it.

The King’s Purpose

I still go to the places that you play games and get tickets and then get toys, although not often
We took Jetson - he did not look at the toys on the wall the same way as I remember
a little younger all he cared about was playing
we got a few tokens, made a few things go, after a while he just went from one to another and we did not even have to put tokens in
the purpose was not the toys, although his grandparents made sure he had some toys
it was being with him… we met Kaitlynn and Jordan and then made them leave, not letting them go with us
Isaiah 53:9–10 CSB
9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked, but he was with a rich man at his death, because he had done no violence and had not spoken deceitfully. 10 Yet the Lord was pleased to crush him severely. When you make him a guilt offering, he will see his seed, he will prolong his days, and by his hand, the Lord’s pleasure will be accomplished.
struck down because of our rebellion
placed in a tomb and counted as a criminal
he was placed in rich man’s tomb
Joseph of Arimathea
Our Rebellion required a guilt offering
this started in the Garden, when God took the life of an animal so that Adam and Eve’s shame could be covered
tell the story
when the law came to the Israelites God told them they must sacrifice for their sins…
Leviticus 5:5–6 CSB
5 If someone incurs guilt in one of these cases, he is to confess he has committed that sin. 6 He must bring his penalty for guilt for the sin he has committed to the Lord: a female lamb or goat from the flock as a sin offering. In this way the priest will make atonement on his behalf for his sin.
now we have a permanent sacrifice
Jesus died once for all sin
he was the perfect spotless lamb as John the Baptist declared who came to take away the sins of the world
Romans 5:1 CSB
1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
We now have peace with God that we did not have without this sacrifice and this is why the prophet said it was the “Lord’s pleasure would be accomplished”

The King’s Pleasure

I have seen an argument that if point one is true, then the cross is the biggest form of child abuse there is
that the father would sacrifice his son
I guess if you do not know, or believe that Jesus is God in the flesh, then you could think that
But this is not like me offering one of my children to die so that others could enjoy life
but God came, lived and died so that we could be made righteous
and it was to his pleasure, his joy that he do so
Isaiah 53:10–11 CSB
10 Yet the Lord was pleased to crush him severely. When you make him a guilt offering, he will see his seed, he will prolong his days, and by his hand, the Lord’s pleasure will be accomplished. 11 After his anguish, he will see light and be satisfied. By his knowledge, my righteous servant will justify many, and he will carry their iniquities.
the death of Jesus pleased the father
we look for so long on ways to please God
we make rules and try to keep them but even fail at our rules let alone his
how we please God is by being in his will…
1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 CSB
16 Rejoice always, 17 pray constantly, 18 give thanks in everything; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
The death of Jesus pleased the father because of atonement
but he was pleased to raise him as well
he will see his seed
those that he ransomed would be called children of God
he will prolong his days
death is not the end for him
and because it is not the end for him, it is not the end for us
he will see the light

The King’s Possession

The Prophet is clear this is not the end for the suffering servant
Tell the story of the resurrection
ladies going to the tomb
earth quake - angels come and the soldiers guarding the tomb fell like dead men
the stone was rolled away and up from the tomb he arose!
the ladies run back to tell the apostles
Mary Magdalene slower to go back has an interaction with the risen savior
the apostles were in a state of disbelief when the hear
but Peter and John run to the tomb find it empty and believe
Isaiah 53:11–12 CSB
11 After his anguish, he will see light and be satisfied. By his knowledge, my righteous servant will justify many, and he will carry their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will give him the many as a portion, and he will receive the mighty as spoil, because he willingly submitted to death, and was counted among the rebels; yet he bore the sin of many and interceded for the rebels.
Now the many are justified or made righteous and have been given to him as a portion and spoil
actually reads like “I will give and he will receive many as a spoil”
spoil = receive by force
the victor of the battle plunders his enemy and takes a spoil
the victory has been won and satan has been defeated
those that believe have been given as a spoil the the suffering servant, the to King who has risen and won the victory over death
Those who have been given to him in spoil he will not lose
John 6:39–40 CSB
39 This is the will of him who sent me: that I should lose none of those he has given me but should raise them up on the last day. 40 For this is the will of my Father: that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him will have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”
all who come to him will not be cast out
but Christ shall raise him up on the last day
until that day Jesus is on his throne interceding for all who have been given to him
unlike me, who would get those arcade toys, realize at some point they were junk and lose it or toss is
This is why we celebrate the resurrection and the hope that we have in it…
I pray that you would believe it
Romans 10:9 CSB
9 If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
