Call to Worship

Say: Let us now begin to worship the Father the Son, the Holy Spirit, Our Call to worship Comes to us from

Revelation 1:17–18 ESV
17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, “Fear not, I am the first and the last, 18 and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.

Who is Jesus?

My Main Questions for you today is who is Jesus and what does he do?

Many say his name, and many have a lot to say about him but who is he?
Today Jesus’s name is becoming increasingly taboo. It is becoming costly to speak of him. It can get you fired, it can get you in trouble at school, it can cause difficulty at home. This is the devil’s plan coming to fruition. Jesus is taking lightly, reserved fro when you hit your hand, when your surprised, to add extra weight to a point that you or I are trying to make. his name is used in movies no different then any other 4 letter word.

So the question is who is he?

According to the Bible, we are going to Christmas y’all, an angel told Joseph and Mary separately that they were to call Mary’s son “Jesus.”
The angel who spoke to Joseph explained why: “for he will save his people from their sins” (Matt. 1:21; cf. Luke 1:31).
The name Jesus means “Jehovah saves,” and the angel’s comment assumes an awareness of this meaning.
Since the angel said that “he,” meaning in context Jesus, would save his people, the implication is that Jesus somehow is Jehovah.
His name demonstrates his actions to us. John 1:29
John 1:29 ESV
29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
John the baptist new what Jesus was to do, this saviour nature of Jesus is in the very person he is Jesus is the God man who came to save people from their sin.
Sin is breaking God’s law that is things such as (list the ten commandments).
In his very nature he is God, uncreated, a saviour.

That is who Jesus is so what does he do?

I’m going to talk about the three offices that Jesus’ holds. These 3 offices are what he does.
Jesus occupies 3 offices the prophet, priest, and king. As a n image if you have seen the movie or read the book in the Lord of the rings, Tolkien broke this office into 3 characters, Aragon the king who lead the charge into the black gates, Gandalf he rose from the dead proclaiming what is to come, and Frodo who carried the evils of the ring on his person to bring it to destruction.
We are going to look at a text in the Bible this morning to demonstrate these offices.

Text Mark 16:1-20

Mark 16:1–20 NKJV
1 Now when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, that they might come and anoint Him. 2 Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen. 3 And they said among themselves, “Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?” 4 But when they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away—for it was very large. 5 And entering the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a long white robe sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. 6 But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him. 7 But go, tell His disciples—and Peter—that He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him, as He said to you.” 8 So they went out quickly and fled from the tomb, for they trembled and were amazed. And they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. 9 Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons. 10 She went and told those who had been with Him, as they mourned and wept. 11 And when they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe. 12 After that, He appeared in another form to two of them as they walked and went into the country. 13 And they went and told it to the rest, but they did not believe them either. 14 Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen. 15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” 19 So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen.
This is one of the traditional Easter texts. We as a church have a commitment to preaching God’s word line by line, precept by precept. God in his sovereignty has set it up in such a way that this text in which the Resurrection is what we would speak on would be the one for Easter this year. We believe that the Bible is God’s very word for mankind, that it is completely true and that every thing it teaches is useful and good to live by. It is the source of ultimate truth because it is written by God who cannot lie as the Bible says.
Numbers 23:19 (ESV)
19 God is not man, that he should lie,
And so when I or any Christian reads this book we know that the Bible says this about itself
2 Timothy 3:16–17 ESV
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
The Bible Testifies to it being breathed out by God. You may say that sounds like circular reasoning, but I’d push back on you and say who did you hear that from? Are they completely trust worthy that you would bet your life on them? The Christian Bible isn’t a line of men I have to trust completely, it is a line that goes straight back to God.
So when we look at this text in detail and it describes the actions and person of Jesus this is God testifying to us about himself. Let’s look at the first office.

King Jesus

Mark 10:32  And they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them.

What is a king?

This I contend to you demonstrates the kingly office of Jesus. They walked to Jerusalem- this is the king leading his men into battle from the front. He was walking into a battle with his enemies, with the devil, and death.
I believe in this context we see Jesus as demonstrating his connection to David the king of Israel. Jesus was the prophesied decedent of David who would reign on his throne forever.
2 Samuel 7:16 ESV
16 And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.’ ”
Jesus was leading his disciples, like David lead his mighty men, in the protection of his people. This very act of leading and walking into danger is kingly.
Let me expand on this, and you’re going to need to use your
The Bible calls the devil a dragon and Jesus is going to the home of the dragon who he knew was plotting to kill him. In my mind I see Jesus seeing a city with a dragon only he could see that he knew he must fight. We today rightfully thank police, soldiers, firemen for going into harms way. Jesus is the ultimate example of this. He is a warrior king going in to fight the ultimate evil, to ransom us from it with his own blood He Bible says this. Life for a friend. (John)

Application.

For this is what it means to be a king: to be first in every desperate attack and last in every desperate retreat, and when there’s hunger in the land (as must be now and then in bad years) to wear finer clothes and laugh louder over a scantier meal than any man in your land.”
C.S. Lewis
I don’t know many leaders today that I would believe would walk willingly into danger to save another, most just pass the buck, abdicate, pivot, use it to fund-raise but never actually do anything, this is true no matter your political thoughts. Jesus on the other hand does so you can trust him. Do you worry about your family, you can trust him. Jesus looks danger in the face. He doesn’t blink nor squirm. In the Bible there is the true story of Jesus stopping the storm in the middle of the night. If you’re from florida we know a thing about when a storm rages through the night. When a hurricane comes through their is nothing you can do. You can try to get away, you can ride it out, but you must deal with it.
Jesus on the other hand marches into the danger and confronts it. He stopped the storms, he went to fight and he defeated the devil on the cross, his power is undone. So you can trust him in the midst of your storms. Jesus looks to Jerusalem, the place of his death and marches in. When you’re in trouble Jesus see it in the face and does not fail he will conquer the trouble and save you from it. You can trust him.
Men: when you look at the kingship of Christ this must be your example. This is the only way to lead, but you can only do it in Christ. You are called to be a king but you must have a king of kings over you that will be Jesus or chaos who is really Satan. Is your family, life, business gone off the rails? Who is the king of kings in your life? Are you modeling yourself after Jesus or really Satan? (Repent)

Prophet

V6
Mark 16:6 NKJV
6 But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him.
he told them that this would happen. Jesus the prophet

What is a prophet?

You need to understand this, he knew the future. How many people can claim this? Jesus saw the future he accurately described what would happen and it did (Give verse) Jesus’ knowledge of the future demonstrates that he is God. This connects him to the traits we see in the OT. (Go to Genesis 3, isisiah)

He then reveals the very near future

We can look at section and once again learn something from the context.
Jesus knows the future, he explains in simply and clearly

It should now be obvious that the extent of God’s knowledge is universal. God controls the whole course of nature and history (see above and chaps. 4, 14, and 15) and controls everything by a wise plan (chap. 16). He is the “author” of the text of history (chap. 8). His wise plan constitutes knowledge—knowledge of everything, omniscience.41 His knowledge is just as extensive as his lordship. As we saw in the last section, his control, authority, and presence are universal and therefore presuppose universal knowledge.

Our confession of God’s omniscience is not based only on the above arguments. Scripture states it quite explicitly and often:

Great is our Lord, and mighty in power;

his understanding has no limit. (Ps. 147:5)

[Peter] said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” (John 21:17; cf. 2:24–25)

For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. (Heb. 4:12–13)

For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. (1 John 3:20)

Application:

You can trust God with tomorrow, with your life, God is not surprised, God is a safe tower to draw to.
Jesus being the 2nd member of the trinity shares this with his father and is trustworthy with your life

Jesus the priest

What is a priest?

A Priest is one that carries the burdens of thew people before the Lord. He goes to the Lord in behalf of the people The Bible records this
Hebrews 4:14–5:3
14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
5 For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2 He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. 3 Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins just as he does for those of the people.
Jesus can relate to us and so we can see in our text today him doing just this:

Give the Gospel

text

Mark 16:15–18 ESV
15 And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
He when sending out the disciples to spread the gospel tells them to perform miracles to validate the gospel and because he cares for people

Benediction

Say: As we close our service of worship dear brother and sister please stand for our benediction and receive by faith this blessing from God

Ephesians 3:20–21 ESV
20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
