Introduction

Greetings…
Today, we continue our “third Sunday series” on “Parables In The New Testament” by looking at a lesser known, yet still powerful parable of the “Sorting The Catch.”
We find it in Matthew 13:47-50.
Matthew 13:47–50 ESV
47 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind. 48 When it was full, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into containers but threw away the bad. 49 So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous 50 and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
There are two main points I want us to consider this afternoon concerning this wonderful parable.
The first we see is that…

All Are Welcome To Salvation

God Shows No Partiality

Again let’s read what is said there in Matthew 13:47.
Matthew 13:47 ESV
47 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind.
When it comes to salvation, God wants everyone to be saved.
1 Timothy 2:3–4 ESV
3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
2 Peter 3:9 ESV
9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
God shows no partiality to any one person over another.
Acts 10:34–35 ESV
34 So Peter opened his mouth and said: “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, 35 but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.
Romans 2:11 ESV
11 For God shows no partiality.

Summary

There is no scenario wherein God does not desire everyone to be saved.
This is why he has freely offered his son (Titus 2:11) for everyone’s sins and has done so much to have us spend an eternity with him forever.
However, this parable doesn’t stop with the kingdom of heaven’s desire for souls.
Because there is an eternal difference between all are welcome to salvation and…

All Are Wanted In Heaven

God Shows Partiality

Notice again what Jesus teaches here in Matthew 13:48.
Matthew 13:48 ESV
48 When it was full, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into containers but threw away the bad.
The reality is, yes God shows no partiality wherein salvation’s offering is concerned, but when it comes to spending an eternity with God in heaven, we must “choose in this life if we want our home in heaven in the next life.”
Why, because God certainly shows partiality when it comes to who can enter through the narrow gate and be with him for an eternity.
It is only those that put him first and above all others.
Luke 10:27 ESV
27 And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”
It is only those that put his kingdom first in their lives.
Matthew 6:33 ESV
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
It is only those that are willing to give everything up in this life for the next.
Luke 14:33 ESV
33 So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.

Summary

No, God does not show partiality when it comes to being a part of his family.
God wants every soul to come to him, have their sins removed, and be a part of his family.
Yes, God does show partiality when it comes to who will live with him for an eternity.

Conclusion

It will be the ones that shows him their love for him (John 14:15).
It will be the ones that don’t give up on him in this life but persevere to the next (James 1:12).
Invitation
Isaiah 59:1–2 ESV
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
Philippians 2:6–7 ESV
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
