John 12:1-37. Palm Sunday.(Donkey Sunday, leaves Sunday or clothe Sunday).
What is our hope? For life? For God, for us? For our savior? Is it money, possessions, power and influence? Following? (World, self, Enemy). What is our life for? What do we give worth to? Put our hope and trust in?
As we look at Jesus entry in to Jerusalem, what are the people hoping that Jesus will do and be?
From last time we know there is some excitement about Jesus and some hope in him. (king, provider of food, healing, hope he will save from Rome and oppressors, the Christ).
The large crowd that we heard was asking if Jesus was coming to the feast when they were in the temple, they hear that Jesus is coming. And they get palm branches (PPT on palm branches) and goes to meet Jesus, as they cry out Hosanna, save us we pray, - who do they want saving from? Romans? – I doubt it is their sin. Blessed it he that comes in the name of the Lord, - Oh Jesus you come in the name of the Lord save us, - you are the king, - as a king save us, we pray. There is a hope that Jesus will be king and save the people, - kick out the Romans set up religious and just rule, provide all that the people hope and need, that Jesus is the King, - the one sent from God coming in his name.
Jesus does his part to fulfil, Zac 9:9 – Jesus gets and rides a donkey, - and the words of the prophy is changed a little: “fear not” instead of rejoice, your king is coming sitting on a donkey… rejoice – so then the crowd is right Jesus is a king. Will Jesus then be what they want him to be? And do the disciples understand what Jesus is doing? John as he has done before say, no, in the moment the disciples did not understand, not before Jesus was glorified, then they remembered what Jesus did.
The other crowed that was saw Jesus raise Lazarus, because of their witness, many and the big crowd came to Jesus, and that was why the many came out to Jesus with palms, in hope that Jesus was the coming king.
19 the Pharisees green and blue of envy, complain to one another that Jesus is gaining the whole world and they are gaining nothing. – They have a hope that Jesus will go away, get killed and they will retain their power and social statues and or gain more.
Then we have a short interlude – that supports was the Pharisees said that other nations were coming to see Jesus, some Greeks asks Philip if they can meet with Jesus, and Philip asks Andew, and Andrew Philip go to Jesus, - and Jesus gives a different reply – the opposite of what John has said so fare: The hour has come… for the Son of Man to be glorified, - (He does not address the question of the meeting with the Greeks.
Jesus also explains how that will happen -agriculture metaphor amen, amen 24 – the way a seed give life to more crop, so it is to give lay one’s life down that it may bear much fruit – Jesus saying that his life is going to be laid down. – as he said earlier, - Jesus also adds something, - a challenge, - in 25. What about your life do you love it? – you will lose it, and if you hate it you will keep it for eternal life – wow, - no thanks. Most people don’t what to lose life and if life is hard the don’t want to keep it forever, - but then what is better? Well, Jesus just said so, die to self, that you might live in Christ for God. – in 26 saying that if anyone serves him, he must follow him (not himself), the promise is great that then the servant will be with Jesus. And if anyone serves me, the Father will honor him. - Jesus explain the upside kingdom, that giving up life (for our self) to really live in Christ, to serve, deny self, to follow Jesus’ walking with him in the way he lived for God, and served God, - Jesus’ life on earth is reaching it peek glorification, his time is now coming, - will Jesus want to escape? And not lay down his life. Jesus stating that his soul is troubled/real trubel real prayer , what should he do ask the Father to save him from this hour? But this why, Jesus came – this was his purpose, that he came… to die as the grain that falls to the ground… To be lifted up and glorified, That eternal life would be available for anyone that believes in Jesus, life, death, resurrection. Jesus’ response is amazing: Father, glorify your name…. (Not mine, not my infucende power and wealth etc. your will not mine). 3-1 God talking with one another and fellowship, honor and glory to one another. God the father speaking from Heaven I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again. (The purpose of life to give worship and glory to God).
The people heard it and said that it thundered, others said and angle spoke to Jesus, (could the and would they hear God’s voice). Jesus saying it was not for me the voice was there, it was for you…That you might believe God send me. (Like when Jesus prayed out loud before he raised Lazarus from the death – when God spoke at his baptizem).
Now is the time for judgment of this world, now will the ruler of this world be cast out – devil, satan, - and how will this happen.
32. Jesus will be lifted up like the snake in the wilderness, as he said to Nikodemus, - in his death Jesus will be able to draw all people to himself. 33 John write that Jesus said that to show how he would die, and the crowed is now starting to get confused, asking well, we were hoping that you are the king the Christ but the law said that Christ will remain forever, so is that not you, or who is the Son of Man if not you? If the Son of Man is lifted up… to die. Then how can he or you be the Christ – the king? Our savior we asked we prayed that you would be as your rode in to the city?
Then Jesus again asks them to walk in the light, so darkness would not overtake them, - walking in darkness they will be lost. (said before)
36 walks in the light, and believe in the light (Jesus) – that they we might be sons of light – sons of God doing Gods will in Jesus Christ.
But then Jesus departs and hid himself from them.
Who is Jesus?
What savior are you looking for? And what do you need salvation from?
What are you living for?
Have you died? That you might live in Jesus Christ? Do you daily die, to live for Jesus?
Where is you hope? And trust?
John is clear in his gospel, Jesus is the word, is God, is the lamb of God that takes the sins of the world, the son of God, the Messiah, king of Israel, the true putrefaction, the ones that can save from condemnation, living water, the bread of life, the savoir of the world, ruler of the elements, healer, teacher, light of the world true life, the I am, lord of life and death, the good shepherd that will lay down his life, and is able to take it up again, the resurrection and life, the son of man. King of Israel. The coming King.
Jesus is asking to glorify his father, - is that our mission in life to give glory to God as we obey what God calls us to do, - what every you put your trust in that is not Jesus, will fail you, it will not lead to a life of worship following Jesus, - only trusting and following Jesus, as lord, God and savior makes that possible, by the power of the Holy Spirt to live a life the gives glory to God, in worshiping Jesus.
