John 19:28-29, I Thirst...

Psalm 16:8 “I have set the Lord always before me; Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved.”

Introduction/Story

i hope yall don’t mind me teaching this thing ....
First let me please set the scene once again...TALK......
and here we are with our saviour on the cross at His 5th saying...
“I thirst” reveals to us about Jesus. First, that Jesus suffered physically. Second, that Jesus fulfilled Scripture. And finally that Jesus is thirsty for us..
Physical suffering...
The phrase, “I thirst,” reminds us again of the incredible physical suffering that Jesus suffered on our behalf.
So this Good Friday, as we consider these things, hear the cry of Christ, with dry tongue sticking to His mouth, and see him suffering, physically, on your behalf. Try to imagine what Jesus felt, what he experienced, what this feeling of thirst was like. And recognize that he was experiencing the pain and suffering that our sin has created in order pay for our sin and eventually remove that pain and suffering from this world.TALK, PREACH......
second revelation of “I thirst”: that Jesus fulfilled Scripture.
Prophecy fulfilled...
this text starts out powerful, John 19:28 “After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!””
what was fulfilled? in my studies, we see that there were 28 prophecies, fulfilled thru Jesus that day...if i can bore you for a few moments and bring your attention to just a few of them, not going to hit all 28...
1) The serpent would bruise the seed of the woman.
Prophesied: (Gen. 3:15).
Fulfilled: (John 12:31-33).
3) The betrayal of Jesus by Judas was foretold by David.
Prophesied: (Psa. 41:9).
Fulfilled: (Mark 14:10-11).
4) Jesus Christ would be forsaken by His disciples, as prophesied by Zechariah.
Prophesied: (Zech. 13:7).
Fulfilled: (Mark 14:50)
7) Isaiah prophesied that Jesus Christ would be sacrificed as the Passover Lamb of God.
Prophesied: (Isa. 53:7).
Fulfilled: ” (I Cor. 5:7). I Pet. 1:18-20).
Zechariah prophesied that His body would be pierced with a spear.
Prophesied: (Zech. 12:10).
Fulfilled: ” (John 19:34, 37).
that is just five of the them but Jesus knew what He came to do and He went all of the way....His silence was even prophesied, Jesus was Silent before His Accusers , Prophesied, Isaiah 53:7, fulfilled, Mark 15:5
so Jesus knows all things are accomplished and He says, I Thirst...why?
there was yet still one more prophecy....Psalm 69:21 “They also gave me gall for my food, And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.”
He fulfilled it all for you and for me...
another interesting thing about this scene is found in verse 29...John 19:29 “Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth.”
“The very mention of hyssop would take the thoughts of any Jew back to the saving blood of the Passover lamb.”
It was associated with purification and sacrifices in the tabernacle (Leviticus 14:4, 6; Numbers 19:6, 18). No doubt John had this in mind when he wrote his Gospel.
however if we start a little earlier, Directions are given by Moses to take a bunch of hyssop and dip it into the blood of the lamb that was in the basin, in order to be able to apply it to the lintel and the two sideposts of the front door of the house (Exod 12:22). This was the beginning of the Passover.
Now here they are once again using hyssop on the sacrifical lamb once again...TALK, PREACH......

Points...

John 19:28 “After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!”
Jesus thirsty for us...
there are many other concepts on the deeper meaning of Jesus saying I thirst, but i truly love this one because when I think about and know that my Christ wants me to come to Him..
why because thru Him, like Jude said over in that 24th verse of his book, Jude 24 “Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, And to present you faultless Before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy,”
Christ came down to redeem us back into fellowship with God and it is in Him, with Him and thru Him that we have this opportunity...TALK, PREACH.....(vail tore in two)
So He has a ongoing thirst for us.....to come to Him, to accept our inheritance from God thru Him...
but this thirst is ongoing...
why do I say it is ongoing? because it will never truly be quenched...
walk with me....
even on that cross, our Saviour knew that everyone then and now would not truly come to Him....TALK, PREACH......
I thirst....on his mama side, for the fulfillment of the scriptures,(prophecies) and His thirst for us...
and it’s because of that, that we should thirst for Him....for righteousness, for redemption, for salvation, for grace, for mercy...TALK, PREACH, PARTIAL CLOSE...(because one Friday, He showed His thirst for me)..
