Gracious Thinking v.7
The end is near. The end being Christ returning. (Main cause)
A. The world does not just end. The end has been happening since the church age started when Christ ascended and will end when he returns. Its less a certain date and more constant state of readiness (a thief in the night or the master suddenly returning to see what his workers are doing).
Since the end is near we are to be self-controlled and clear minded. (our response)
A. Self-control: As believers our thoughts are to be framed on the resurrection of Jesus, His authority over all things, His final stage of redemption (church age/end times), and his return. All thoughts and views should be framed by this knowledge.
B. Clear minded or sober. Our minds are to be sharp and focused on the grace given to us. We are to no longer be distracted by worldly pleasures.
3. We are to be in prayer as a result of our state of mind. (our action because of our response)
A. Knowing the end is near, does not drive the believer to fatalism or hopelessness or worry. We are driven to prayer. The active work of God in our lives. To prepare, to use, and to hold fast to.
Gracious love v.8
Because the end is near and we have been given grace, we are to be earnest in our love for other believers.
A. Fervent or earnest love is steadfastly pursued.
B. Its not emotional intensity, but love that trudges on and persist through difficulties.
C. This is the same love that Christ demonstrated to us while we were sinners.
True love will cover many problems and make healthy many relationships.
A. Proverbs 10:12 “Hatred stirs up strife, But love covers all transgressions.”
B. Think forbearance of a problem that prevents it from becoming greater. Its not ignoring sin, but giving grace to deal with sin appropriately. Think Noah’s sons walking backward to cover their fathers nakedness. It was approving his drunkeness, it was showing grace to prevent it from becoming worse.
C. Love keeps Christian community whole and allows the church to survive. In Peter’s time there were not many churches, so the death of one from internal strife would have been massive.
D. We show love in light of maturity in the faith, knowledge of the faith, and standing in the faith. Christ did not through Peter out when he messed up, he loved him and used that love to restore him.
