Christian Standard Bible Chapter 12

THE BEAST FROM THE SEA

1 John 2:15–17 CSB

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride in one’s possessions—is not from the Father, but is from the world. And the world with its lust is passing away, but the one who does the will of God remains forever.

Matthew 4:1–17 CSB

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. Then the tempter approached him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” He answered, “It is written: Man must not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Then the devil took him to the holy city, had him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written: He will give his angels orders concerning you, and they will support you with their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” Jesus told him, “It is also written: Do not test the Lord your God.” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. And he said to him, “I will give you all these things if you will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus told him, “Go away, Satan! For it is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.” Then the devil left him, and angels came and began to serve him. When he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee. He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, along the road by the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles. The people who live in darkness have seen a great light, and for those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned. From then on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, because the kingdom of heaven has come near.”

Be sober-minded, be alert. Your adversary the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour.

Revelation 13 CSB

And I saw a beast coming up out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads. On its horns were ten crowns, and on its heads were blasphemous names. The beast I saw was like a leopard, its feet were like a bear’s, and its mouth was like a lion’s mouth. The dragon gave the beast his power, his throne, and great authority. One of its heads appeared to be fatally wounded, but its fatal wound was healed. The whole earth was amazed and followed the beast. They worshiped the dragon because he gave authority to the beast. And they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast? Who is able to wage war against it?” The beast was given a mouth to utter boasts and blasphemies. It was allowed to exercise authority for forty-two months. It began to speak blasphemies against God: to blaspheme his name and his dwelling—those who dwell in heaven. And it was permitted to wage war against the saints and to conquer them. It was also given authority over every tribe, people, language, and nation. All those who live on the earth will worship it, everyone whose name was not written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slaughtered. If anyone has ears to hear, let him listen. If anyone is to be taken captive, into captivity he goes. If anyone is to be killed with a sword, with a sword he will be killed. This calls for endurance and faithfulness from the saints. Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth; it had two horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon. It exercises all the authority of the first beast on its behalf and compels the earth and those who live on it to worship the first beast, whose fatal wound was healed. It also performs great signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to earth in front of people. It deceives those who live on the earth because of the signs that it is permitted to perform in the presence of the beast, telling those who live on the earth to make an image of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived. It was permitted to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast could both speak and cause whoever would not worship the image of the beast to be killed. And it makes everyone—small and great, rich and poor, free and slave—to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead, so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark: the beast’s name or the number of its name. This calls for wisdom: Let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, because it is the number of a person. Its number is 666.

18 The dragon stood on the sand of the sea.

Vs. 12:18 - The dragon acts like the great angel in Revelation 10. (1 Peter 5:8 - Be sober, Be vigilant; Your adversary the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. )

Vs. 1 - And I saw a beast coming up out of the sea.

Water has had several moments in the Bible. The Spirit hover over the chaos waters, Waters split to allow passage, but then those same waters closed in on the wicked, Jonah thrown into the water, Jesus baptised into the water, and now the beast will come out of the water.

A large body of water. Also used in Scripture to describe the primordial state of the world and as a metaphor for evil

The beast I saw was like a leopard, its feet were like a bear’s, and its mouth was like a lion’s mouth. .

Leopard(very rapid) = Greece, Bear(lumbering and strong) = Persia, Lion = Babylon ( Dan. 7:4-8 ) While in Daniel these kingdom show up individually this particular beast is all those put together. A big melted hybrid beast .

Lamb who was slaughtered.

Vs. 13:2;8 - Notice how these kingdom’s are represented by these intimidating beast. I mean fear strike into a person’s heart if they were to see a leopard, a bear, or a lion in the wild. This is how God sees the great Empires of the past. Where we stand in awe of Alexander the Great, or Xerxes, or the great civilization known as Babylon, God sees nothing but wild beast, because that is the nature, the character, it is their heart God sees. Yet the Lamb, the most unintimidating creature there is conquers them all. (Rev. 5:6-8) . $ beast vs. one lamb, 10 horns vs. 7 horns. Thought the numbers say our enemy is “greater” the lamb is perfectly enough ( Mrk 5:1-20)

Fascination turned to adoration

Amazed - Awestruck, bowled over, dumbfounded

Characteristics of Beast

Wickedness = The world sees this guy as awesome, but God sees him as a beast. A wild, venomous, dangerous, monster

World Dominance - Rising out of the chaos and peoples.

Authority(horns) over all people - Confederacy of 10 nations

Wonder - Fascination turned to adoration

Worshipped - The dragon

Words - Speaks pompous word - all about him 24/7.
