Colter and Jase
Trying to help but he wasn’t effective
Peter cut off Malchus’s Ear
Sincere but not effective
I want to recount the last couple days of Jesus life before his resurrection
Matthew 26 and 27
We will pick up the story at the Passover meal
The disciples are gathered together like they had done every year from their birth
but this night would be different
You’ve seen the pictures.
They’re all sitting on one side of the table.
Jesus has that glowing orb around him
Betrayal:
Jesus tried to lighten the mood by telling the disciples that one of them is going to betray him
Judas asks knowing full well that he had already sealed Jesus’s fate the day before receiving 30 pieces of silver and exchange for Jesus’s life
30 Pieces of Silver = Roughly $6K-15,000
Essentially Judas betrayed Jesus for a used 2013 Honda Civic with about 120,000 miles on it
For the price of a used car, he sold out the son of the living God
Communion:
And while the air of the breath that Jesus identified his betrayer with is still lingering over the awkwardness in the room
Jesus takes bread and wine and introduces them to the most holy of sacraments
A tradition they didn’t have the spiritual ability to fully understand at the time
The holy Eucharist or what we call communion
The new covenant is what Jesus was instituting
the plan of redemption that was orchestrated since the fall of man
The fulfillment of prophecy was unraveling before their eyes
The Garden of Gethsemane:
Jesus takes the disciples to the garden to pray
Jesus is visibly distraught
And Luke go boy he tells us that Jesus was sweating blood
Jesus is pleading with the father to let this cup pass from him
I don’t think he’s concerned about the torture or the beating
I don’t think he’s worried about the loneliness or betrayal
But what he can’t stand the thought of is being seperated from God
Having the wrath of God poured out on Him
If there’s any other way!
Nevertheless, not my will, but yours be done
Jesus goes to wake up the disciples because I couldn’t pray for one hour
He’s met by Judas who betrayed him with a kiss
56 But all this was done that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.”
Then all the disciples forsook Him and fled.
Abandoned:
The people who previously sang praises of him, laid their garments on the ground before him
They’re all gone.
He stands by himself in front of Caiphis the high priest
Joining in on the mockery are the Sanhedrin and scribes
All of the “Spiritual Leaders” of the day
False witnesses:
They try and find fault in Jesus
They brought people in to lie about Jesus
This wasn’t an actual trial
They were weaponizing justice
62 And the high priest arose and said to Him, “Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?” 63 But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest answered and said to Him, “I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!”
64 Jesus said to him, “It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
65 Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, “He has spoken blasphemy! What further need do we have of witnesses? Look, now you have heard His blasphemy!
Imagine all the famous pastors of today gathering around and beating up a person

Jesus is brought before a Pilate
A man who seen hundreds of not thousands of people put the death
He’s probably personally seen men begging plead for the lives.
They ask for mercy and bargain for lesser sentences than death.
But Jesus sits there silently it doesn’t even try to defend himself
Pilate is amazed
Soon he starts to realize that there’s no fault in Jesus
18 For he knew that they had handed Him over because of envy.
The Chief Priest had to break the very commandments God had given them to destroy the One who was sent by Him
The very command, and that shall not covet it is the very byproduct of the envy they felt for Jesus
The governors face it was accustomed to release. One prisoners with the people wished pilot tries to appease the crowd, hoping that they wouldn’t see through his weak leadership
He presents him with an ultimatum
His idea is to offer them a traitor, a murderer, a leader of an insurrection a thief
He thinks himself surely, though too Jesus of a Barabbas
Pilot’s wife even warns him “don’t do anything to that Jesus he’s a just man”
But but the voice of the crowd drowns out the voice of reason
21 The governor answered and said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?”
They said, “Barabbas!”
22 Pilate said to them, “What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?”
They all said to him, “Let Him be crucified!”
23 Then the governor said, “Why, what evil has He done?”
But they cried out all the more, saying, “Let Him be crucified!”
24 When Pilate saw that he could not prevail at all, but rather that a tumult was rising, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, “I am innocent of the blood of this just Person. You see to it.”
25 And all the people answered and said, “His blood be on us and on our children.”
His blood be on us and our children
-that statement has been resounding in the halls of history since that day
-in 70 ad when the temple is destroyed over 500 Jews were crucified a day
Barabbas
Now get this picture
Your Barabbas sitting in prison
Your fate is sealed
No more begging, no more pleading
Just a waiting game now
The next time you’ll see daylight or moonlight
Will be the last time you see anything sitting in the shadows
Your soldier’s footsteps I go through the stone walkway, keys, rattle door swing by open
The guard announces begrudgingly
You’re free to go he says
What?
How could this be?
There was no apology
No changing heart
No trial
Just freedom
A man called Jesus is taking your place
This wasn’t merely political pressure
It was a prophetic fulfillment
5 But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
We were all Barabbas:
Because of Adams sin we all have a sin nature
And because our sin we put Jesus on that cross
6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
I heard this great quote:
God treated Jesus like Barabbas so he could treat Barabbas like Jesus
Jesus had to endure God‘s wrath and his judgment
To take our place on that cross
One of the craziest parts of the story that I never realized
Barabbas in the Arabic language
Is bar- Abbas
The word bar and his name is patronymic
Which is a fancy word for saying the name is derived from father or paternal ancestor
We see an example of that Simon Bar-Jonah
Which means
Abba in Aramaic means father
Barabbas literally means son of the Father
It would’ve been enough of Jesus just took our place and died on our behalf
But on that Saturday before he rose from the grave
The world was silent
Jesus defeated death hell and the grave
He took the keys from the enemy
Provided everything we could possibly need on this earth through his blood
When that stone heavy stone was rolled away, so was our death sentence
Now we’re not just saved, now we’re not just redeemed
4 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.
6 And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!”
Now we’ve bee adopted as sons and daughters of the most high God
What happened to Barabbas?
When I read this story I often wonder about Barabbas
The Bible doesn’t mention anything of him after that day
I wonder was he thankful to Jesus
Was it thankful for the price that was paid for his freedom?
Did you turn his life around?
Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Did he truly find real freedom in Jesus?
I wanna ask you this morning what are you doing with the freedom that Jesus paid for?
Have you received it?
Have you rejected it?
Have you abused it?
You’re a good works
Your good vibes
you’re good energy
Nothing can save you but the blood of Jesus
Self Righteousness
The enemy has been beating you up
Whom the son sets free is free indeed
Let me pray with you
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
13 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Sinners Prayer:
Father God, I give you my life
I give you my heart, I give you my all
I repent today for my past
I thank you my sins are forgiven
I believe in Jesus and that he died on the cross and rose again
I make you the Lord and Savior of my life
I love you God
In Jesus name amen
Communion:
28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. 30 For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep. 31 For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are chastened by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.
It Costs me my blood
23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
