Arrested Development was a tv comedy based on the Bluth family. This family became wealthy due to the real estate business created by the patriarch George. He is arrested for embezzling money. The family that enjoyed living off their father’s success is immediately throne into the real world. They have no credit cards, not more yatchs, no more fancy things.
Michael is the only level headed child in the family. Every time he visits his father in prison, he tells him about the family and their financial situation. George always calmly replies “there’s always money in the banana stand.” George started the banana stand when he was a young man. It was a successful business on the beach selling frozen bananas dipped in chocolate and covered with nuts.
Michael used to work at the banana stand. George Michael, his son, now worked at the banana stand. As a form of protest against the patriarch and a ploy to get insurance money, Michael burned down the banana stand.
Michael returned to prison to inform his father that he burned down the banana stand. He is shocked and grabs Michael. George says,
George Sr.: You what? Michael: Burned it right down to the ground. George Sr.: Are you crazy? There was money in that banana stand. Michael: Well, it's all gone now, Dad, and it was my decision. So the next time you want to have a little power struggle, just remember that you're playing with fire. George Sr.: There was $250,000 lining the walls of the banana stand. Michael: What? George Sr.: Cash, Michael. Michael: Why didn't you tell me that? George Sr.: How much clearer can I say, "THERE'S ALWAYS MONEY IN THE BANANA STAND"?
Need
I don’t want us to be like the Bluth family. I don’t want to us squander the blessings our Father has set aside for us. We need to see the full meaning of God’s Word lest we miss the blessings God has for us.

This morning, as we look at Psalm 16, we will look at the idea of the “full meaning” of God’s Word. At the center of scripture is the life, death, burial, resurrection, and ascension of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Davidic Application

v. 1 David’s Prayer
David begins this song as a prayer to God to preserve and protect him.
We have seen how David has put his faith God to protect him. Goliath, the Philistines, Saul, the Judean wilderness, his own family members (Michal and Absalom), even God himself
2 Samuel 24 - David’s census and God’s judgement. 2 Samuel 24:14 “14 Then David said to Gad, “I am in great distress. Let us fall into the hand of the Lord, for his mercy is great; but let me not fall into the hand of man.””
v. 2 -4 David’s Delight
David recognizes “my good things are not over you”. (v. 2)
Yes, David has nothing good in himself.
But, he is also saying there is nothing that he has that is better than God!
He also recognizes his delight in the saints of God and sorrow in the wicked
How many of us can say this with David? David is calling back to the two great commandments. To love God and love your neighbor. Brothers and sisters, to love God and love our neighbors are the most foundational commands in the Christian life. Let me ask you a question. Is there a better way to show your love for God and love for your neighbor than committing yourself to a local church where you can
1. love God through worshiping and serving him
2. love your neighbor by worshipping alongside and building up your fellow brother/sister in Christ in the local church?
vs. 5-6 David Inheritance
David uses covenantal language to describe his relationship with God.
God gave his covenant people, the twelve tribes of Israel, different land allotments inside the promised land as part of the Mosiac covenant.
However, the tribe of Levi, the priests, were not given a portion.
Numbers 18:20 ESV
20 And the Lord said to Aaron, “You shall have no inheritance in their land, neither shall you have any portion among them. I am your portion and your inheritance among the people of Israel.
Deuteronomy 10:9 ESV
9 Therefore Levi has no portion or inheritance with his brothers. The Lord is his inheritance, as the Lord your God said to him.)
Brothers and sisters, can we sing with the David that whatever lot God has given us it is pleasant?
Horatio Gates Spafford took David’s words to heart.
Horatio Spafford was a successful lawyer, businessman, and devout Christian in Chicago. He had been financially successful until the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which destroyed much of his real estate holdings. 
In 1873, Spafford's wife and four daughters were on a transatlantic voyage when the ship, the SS Ville du Havre, sank after a collision. All four of Spafford's daughters, Annie, Maggie, Bessie, and Tanetta, were among the 226 people who died. 
Spafford's wife, Anna, sent him a telegram that read, "Saved alone... What shall I do?". He immediately set out to join her, and as his ship sailed near the site of the disaster, he was inspired to write the words to "It Is Well With My Soul". 
When peace like a river attendeth my way,   When sorrows like sea billows roll; Whatever my lot Thou hast taught me to say,   “It is well, it is well with my soul!”
vs. 7-8 David’s Blessing
The indwelling of the Holy Spirit that allows David’s heart to listen to God.
Calvin says that it is the Holy Spirit for the duration of our lives working inside of us that allows our hearts, our minds, our wisdom, our desires to changed. As if the Holy Spirit is kindling the light of faith into a brighter flame.
Yesterday, Sowmya asked me how can I be nice to our patients.
I don’t do it perfectly. Sometimes, I am not. But, I know that my frustrations at work or rude patients can’t shake me. Why, because the God of the universe is holding me in his grasp. What can an angry person at Walgreens do to shake me out of hand of the Triune God?
vs. David’s Rejoicing 9-11
David’s words are so powerful here because we realize he is saying these things in faith.
At the end of his life, David’s flesh was not secure. (Absalom) His body did see decay. (David’s body couldn’t keep him warm and his body did decay in a grave)
He realizes that Sheol (the grave) is not where God will leave David. He expects something beyond the grave. I even believe that God is speaking through David in this passage to tell his Israelite brothers and sisters to expect a resurrection from the dead one day.
Enoch walked with the Lord and the Lord took him. Where? Why if there is nothing after death?
Abraham was willing to sacrifice Isaac because he believed God would raise Isaac from the dead
Joseph didn’t want his bones to be left in Egypt
Samuel’s spirit was contacted by the witch of Endor
Brothers and sisters, we can have the same assurance that David had. He knew that God would not leave his body in the grave or leave his soul in the pit. When we face death, it should hurt but not hopeless. Why can we have this hope? Because of Jesus’ fulfillment of this Psalm.

Divine Application

vs. 1 Jesus’ Prayer
Throughout his ministry, Jesus entrusted himself to the father.
John 2:24 “24 But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people”
John 5:30 “30 “I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me.”
Luke 22:42 “42 saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.””
Luke 23:46 “46 Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last.”
v. 2 -4 Jesus’ Delight
Heretics, cults, Muslims, and all other groups that deny the Trinity after use Jesus’ fulfillment of this text as a proof for their rejection of the Trinity.
John 14:28 “28 You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.”
Jesus’ statements to the Father’s superiority do not debunk the Trinity. Instead, they demonstrate to us that Jesus comes in the form of a servant not to be served but to serve.
He is the perfect example of an obedient servant that worships the Lord.
2. The Lord Jesus knows the names of his elect. Our names have been written in the Book of Life
vs. 5-6 Jesus’ Inheritance
The Lord Jesus entrusted himself even in the midst of suffering and torment.
It is amazing to think that the Lord Jesus can say, I have a beautiful inheritance.
Psalm 2:8 “8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession.”

vs. Jesus’ Rejoicing 9-11

Conclusion

The Sixth Sense. Seeing something completely differently when you see all the pieces.
Death changes everything. But the Christian doesn’t just recognize the death of a king. We also recognize the resurrection of the king.
Repent and put your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation.
Read your Bible this week with the fuller sense in mind.
