Transcript
We have come to the end of Psalm 119—the longest and one of the most beloved chapters in all of Scripture.
This final stanza, verses 169 through 176, is not filled with spiritual pride, but with humble dependence.
After 175 verses of loving and meditating on God’s Word, the psalmist closes with a confession:
“I have gone astray like a lost sheep…”
He doesn’t end this Psalm standing tall—but kneeling low, clinging to the mercy and help of God.
1. A Cry for Understanding and Deliverance
1. A Cry for Understanding and Deliverance
(Verses 169–170)
“Let my cry come near before thee, O LORD: give me understanding according to thy word.
Let my supplication come before thee: deliver me according to thy word.”
He doesn’t begin with celebration—but with desperation.
He lifts a cry, a supplication—deep, urgent prayer.
But notice: he doesn’t just pray emotionally.
He prays biblically.
He says:
“Give me understanding according to thy Word.”
“Deliver me according to thy Word.”
Cross-References:
James 1:5 – “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God…”
Proverbs 2:6 – “The LORD giveth wisdom…”
Psalm 34:17 – “The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth…”
Application:
When you're in trouble—cry out.
But cry with Scripture in your hands.
Let the Word shape your prayers.
2. A Mouth Filled with Praise and Proclamation
2. A Mouth Filled with Praise and Proclamation
(Verses 171–172)
“My lips shall utter praise, when thou hast taught me thy statutes.
My tongue shall speak of thy word: for all thy commandments are righteousness.”
This is the natural response of a heart taught by God:
Lips that praise.
A tongue that testifies.
When God opens your eyes, He also opens your mouth.
Cross-References:
Luke 6:45 – “Out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.”
Hebrews 13:15 – “The fruit of our lips giving thanks to His name.”
Psalm 51:15 – “Open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise.”
Application:
Don’t keep His Word to yourself.
Let your lips become a fountain of praise and proclamation.
3. A Heart Dependent on God’s Help
3. A Heart Dependent on God’s Help
(Verses 173–174)
“Let thine hand help me; for I have chosen thy precepts.
I have longed for thy salvation, O LORD; and thy law is my delight.”
Do you see the mix of strength and surrender here?
“I have chosen…”
“I have longed…”
“Thy law is my delight…”
BUT—“Let thine hand help me.”
Even when we’ve made the right choices—we still need God’s help.
📖 Cross-References:
John 15:5 – “Without me ye can do nothing.”
Isaiah 41:10 – “I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”
Psalm 121:2 – “My help cometh from the LORD…”
Application:
Don’t try to walk in obedience without God's power.
The Word gives direction—God gives strength.
4. A Soul in Need of Life and Rescue
4. A Soul in Need of Life and Rescue
(Verses 175–176)
“Let my soul live, and it shall praise thee; and let thy judgments help me.
I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek thy servant; for I do not forget thy commandments.”
What a powerful and vulnerable ending…
Even after 175 verses about loving and obeying God's Word—he says:
“I have gone astray like a lost sheep.”
But he doesn’t promise to fix it himself.
He pleads: “Seek thy servant.”
📖 Cross-References:
Isaiah 53:6 – “All we like sheep have gone astray…”
Luke 15:4 – “What man of you… doth not leave the ninety and nine…”
John 10:11 – “I am the good shepherd…”
1 Peter 2:25 – “Ye were as sheep going astray, but are now returned…”
📝 Application:
Even the faithful wander.
But grace doesn’t say “Fix yourself.”
Grace says, “I’ll come find you.”
Conclusion: The Journey Ends Where the Word Remains
Conclusion: The Journey Ends Where the Word Remains
Psalm 119 begins with blessing:
“Blessed are the undefiled in the way…” (v. 1)
It ends with brokenness:
“I have gone astray like a lost sheep.” (v. 176)
But in every verse in between, one thing stays the same:
The psalmist is anchored in the Word.
🎯 Main Takeaway:
A mature believer clings to the Word in:
Prayer – “Give me understanding…”
Praise – “My lips shall utter praise…”
Dependence – “Let thy hand help me…”
Repentance – “Seek thy servant…”
