Day 6 - Burial

Not enough Time
John 19:38–42 NASB95
After these things Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but a secret one for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate granted permission. So he came and took away His body. Nicodemus, who had first come to Him by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds weight. So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen wrappings with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. Therefore because of the Jewish day of preparation, since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
Matthew 27:62–66 NASB95
Now on the next day, the day after the preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered together with Pilate, and said, “Sir, we remember that when He was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I am to rise again.’ “Therefore, give orders for the grave to be made secure until the third day, otherwise His disciples may come and steal Him away and say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last deception will be worse than the first.” Pilate said to them, “You have a guard; go, make it as secure as you know how.” And they went and made the grave secure, and along with the guard they set a seal on the stone.

Day 7 - The Grave

Preaching in Paradise
Ephesians 4:7–10 NASB95
But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift. Therefore it says, “When He ascended on high, He led captive a host of captives, And He gave gifts to men.” (Now this expression, “He ascended,” what does it mean except that He also had descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the heavens, so that He might fill all things.)
1 Peter 3:18–19 NASB95
For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison,
Acts 2:24–27 CSB
God raised him up, ending the pains of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by death. For David says of him: I saw the Lord ever before me; because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices. Moreover, my flesh will rest in hope, because you will not abandon me in Hades or allow your holy one to see decay.
1 Corinthians 15:54–57 NASB95
But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, “Death is swallowed up in victory. “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law; but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Day 1 (8) The Resurrection

Jesus walked out of the Tomb before the Stone rolled Away
Matthew 28:1–6 NASB95
Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the grave. And behold, a severe earthquake had occurred, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled away the stone and sat upon it. And his appearance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. The guards shook for fear of him and became like dead men. The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified. “He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying.
Great Earthquake caused by the Angel
His face was like a bright beam of light
Shook with Fear
Shook Means to vibrate or tremble
Night Terrors - They were Paralyzed
Afraid because of the Angel
Angel climbs up on the stone
No where in Scripture does it say, “Jesus walked out of the tomb”
The Angel didn’t roll the stone away to let Jesus out but to let people in to see that Jesus wasn’t there
Jesus had a multi-dimensional body
He could instantly appear or disappear
The physical world and the spiritual world
John 20:19 NASB95
So when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
Luke 24:36–37 NASB95
While they were telling these things, He Himself stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be to you.” But they were startled and frightened and thought that they were seeing a spirit.
Startled - that very first gotcha moment when someone scares you
or a Jump scare moment
Then they remained frightened - they thought Jesus was a ghost
Luke 24:38–40 NASB95
And He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? “See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; touch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet.
Ghost don’t have bodies they are ethereal
Mini-Zombie Apocalypse-The First Fruits
Matthew 27:51–53 NASB95
And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth shook and the rocks were split. The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection they entered the holy city and appeared to many.
They appeared to their loved ones and then many believe they were gone and they are not mentioned again
Only Matthew records this event which is significant
John was written to the world
Mark was written to the Romans
Luke was written to the Gentiles
Matthew was written to the Jew
Only a Jew would have understood what happened and why it happened
What do the Jews know that us Gentiles don’t
This goes back to the feast of the First Fruits
which is one of the seven feasts of the Lord
There were seven feasts every Jew was required to go to Jerusalem to participate in three times a year
Two Times there were three feasts together and one time was for a specific feast
Spring time were three feast in one
and the fall time were three feast in one
Leave up slide while you explain below
Seven Feasts
Feast of Passover
Feast of Unleavened bread
Feast of First Fruits
Feast of Pentecost
Feast of Trumpets
Feast of Atonement
Feast of Tabernacles
In the spring
Feast of Passover
Feast of Unleavened bread
Feast of First Fruits
These all happened over one week
50 days later you celebrate the
Feast of Pentecost
In the Fall you celebrate
The Feast of Trumpets
The Feast of Atonement
The Feast of Tabernacles
These feasts provide a prophetic picture of what the Messiah would do
Explain how Jews celebrated the feast of the first fruits and how Jesus fulfilled it as the Messiah
The spring feasts are prophetical of Jesus First coming
The fall feasts are prophetical of Jesus second coming
On the day of passover after the last lamb was sacrificed the High Priest and his entourage would walk up the Mount of Olives to a small barley field that the Levites had planted just for this event.
They squeezed stalks of barley together and they tied a cord around them making 10 Sheaves of Barley but they didn’t cut them.
Those 10 sheaves were being marked as the First Fruits
They were the shaves that were going to be offered to God in the Temple on the day of the feast of first fruits
The day of first fruits is always celebrated on the marrow after the sabbath during the week of unleavened bread
Scripture teaches that at about the time they were tying the sheaves there was an earthquake which caused the stones on certain tombs to roll open which is what Matthew is writing about
Then after the first fruits were marked they went back to the temple and ate their passover meal
They ate the meal at sundown
Remember Jews Count the day from Sundown to Sundown
You slew the passover lamb on Friday afternoon and you took and placed on the fire and it was done until the sun went down
the next day is the feast of unleavened bread and this is the day you actually eat the lamb
The High Priest and his entourage come down from the Mount of Olives they came back and ate their passover meal
Now Friday has passed, then Saturday has passed then about an hour before the Sun was supposed to rise on the first day of the week it was time to harvest the first fruits
The goal of getting their an hour early, usually around 5:30 in the morning, was so they could present the first fruits to God as soon as the sun came up
The High Priest would walk up to the ten sheaves which had been marked and he would harvest them
He would take a sickle and he would cut the bottom of the stalks freeing them from their roots which tied them to the earth and he would place each one of the sheaves into the basket in order to take it back to the temple so he could present it to God as the first fruits
At the same time the High Priest was harvesting the first fruits, or I should say as soon as his sickle hit the stalks of the first sheave of barley Jesus came alive
At this moment Jesus was resurrected but not Jesus only...
Lets look back a Matt 27:51-53
Matthew 27:51–53 NASB95
And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth shook and the rocks were split. The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection they entered the holy city and appeared to many.
They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ Resurrection
So the earthquake marked the tombs of those who would be resurrected along with Jesus but they didn’t come out of the tombs until after Jesus was resurrected!
1 Corinthians 15:20–22 NASB95
But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep. For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.
He had to prepare them. There is about an hour and a half between the harvesting and the presentation to the Lord
This is why Jesus tells Mary
John 20:17 KJV 1900
Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.
Jesus did not ascend until it was time to offer the First Fruits to the Lord
At the moment the High Priest offered up the First Fruits to the Lord
Jesus presented the First Fruits of the Resurrection to God the Father at the Temple in Heaven.
Hebrews 9:11–12 NASB95
But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things to come, He entered through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation; and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.
Hebrews 9:24 NASB95
For Christ did not enter a holy place made with hands, a mere copy of the true one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us;
