Introduction

Caravaggio “Supper at Emmaus” - considered one of the most famous paintings sold in 2013 for almost $25000
Passion Week began with Jesus entering into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday
Monday he cleansed the temple
Tuesday through Thursday he taught in the synagogues, met with the 12 for the Passover Meal, gives them instructions to celebrate communion, washes their feet showing them humble service, and goes to the Garden of Gethsemane and prays so earnestly “his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground”
During the Passover meal Jesus also predicted his betrayal. I asked the Youth Wednesday night, to put them selves in the disciples shoes. After seeing Jesus’ triumph and authority early in the week, how would they feel Saturday night?
Friday came, and we saw Jesus taken and beat and hung on the cross. We saw him breathe his last breath and the guard pierce his side. What do we do now? We’re hiding for our lives because we know we’re next to die. And for what? We thought he was our king!

He is risen!

Luke 24:1–9 KJV
1 Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. 2 And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. 3 And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments: 5 And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee, 7 Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. 8 And they remembered his words, 9 And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest.
Mary Magdalene and the other Mary (Matthew 28) went to the tomb believing Jesus body would be there. They go back believing he had risen
Matthew 28:6–8 “6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. 7 And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you. 8 And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.”

Road to Emmaus

Luke 24:17–26 KJV
17 And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad? 18 And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days? 19 And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: 20 And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. 21 But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done. 22 Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre; 23 And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive. 24 And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not. 25 Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: 26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?
Cleopas asks Jesus “where have you been?”
vs 21: they had trusted
vs 24: the Marys believed but clearly these disciples didn’t

The things concerning himself

Luke 24:27–31 KJV
27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. 28 And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further. 29 But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them. 30 And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. 31 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.
Jesus does a bible study showing them, beginning at Moses, all the times scripture referred to himself
The resurrection proves Jesus was the Son of God and the truth of His claims about Himself and the claims God makes about him in the bible
Romans 1:3–4 “3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; 4 And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:”
1 John 5:9–12 “9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son. 10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. 11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life

Peter’s sermon on Solomon’s Porch

Acts 3:11–26 KJV
11 And as the lame man which was healed held Peter and John, all the people ran together unto them in the porch that is called Solomon’s, greatly wondering. 12 And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk? 13 The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let him go. 14 But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you; 15 And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses. 16 And his name through faith in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all. 17 And now, brethren, I wot that through ignorance ye did it, as did also your rulers. 18 But those things, which God before had shewed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled. 19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; 20 And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you: 21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began. 22 For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. 23 And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people. 24 Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days. 25 Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. 26 Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.
Peter attributes the healing not to his own power but to faith in Jesus (v. 12, 16)
He confronts the people with their rejection of Jesus despite Pilate's willingness to release him (v. 13-15)
Peter acknowledges they acted in ignorance, as did their leaders (v. 17)
He calls them to repent so their sins may be wiped out (v. 19)
Peter identifies Jesus as the prophet like Moses whom God promised (v. 22-23)
He connects Jesus to the covenant God made with Abraham (v. 25)
God sent Jesus first to the Israelites to bless them by turning them from their wicked ways (v. 26)

Conclusion

1 Peter 1:3 “3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,”
The resurrection demonstrates that His death on the cross wasn’t defeat but was part of God’s redemptive plan. It proves His authority over sin and death giving us a hope for eternity!
If Jesus truly was king of kings and Lord of lords and if the tomb is empty then he has the authority over everything and his word must be taken as the final word on any matter at all!
