We are to have to heart for people to be saved, but understand Jesus is the Savior not us. So we turn people to Jesus for salvation.
1 Samuel 19

INTRODUCTION

Many today think that the world is worst than it has even been. We look at our country and the direction it is going and are saddened or outraged and where we are. I want you to know I don't believe these are the worst times in history. There has been many times of rampant sin and the world heading in horrible direction. In fact there are some alive here today that probably remember a horrible time in history know as WWII.
Many people died in this war fighting. Many people died when Pearl Harbor was attacked. And many Jewish people died in the Holocust
Holocaust was the genocide of European Jews during World War II. Between 1941 and 1945, Nazi Germany and its collaborators systematically murdered some six million Jews across German-occupied Europe, around two-thirds of Europe's Jewish population.
Today as we look at 1 Sam 19 I want you to remember how bad the world looked in the 40's.

BIBLE VERSE

1 Samuel 19:1–24 (ESV) And Saul spoke to Jonathan his son and to all his servants, that they should kill David. But Jonathan, Saul’s son, delighted much in David. And Jonathan told David, “Saul my father seeks to kill you. Therefore be on your guard in the morning. Stay in a secret place and hide yourself. And I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, and I will speak to my father about you. And if I learn anything I will tell you.” And Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father and said to him, “Let not the king sin against his servant David, because he has not sinned against you, and because his deeds have brought good to you. For he took his life in his hand and he struck down the Philistine, and the Lord worked a great salvation for all Israel. You saw it, and rejoiced. Why then will you sin against innocent blood by killing David without cause?” And Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan. Saul swore, “As the Lord lives, he shall not be put to death.” And Jonathan called David, and Jonathan reported to him all these things. And Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence as before. And there was war again. And David went out and fought with the Philistines and struck them with a great blow, so that they fled before him. Then a harmful spirit from the Lord came upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his spear in his hand. And David was playing the lyre. And Saul sought to pin David to the wall with the spear, but he eluded Saul, so that he struck the spear into the wall. And David fled and escaped that night. Saul sent messengers to David’s house to watch him, that he might kill him in the morning. But Michal, David’s wife, told him, “If you do not escape with your life tonight, tomorrow you will be killed.” So Michal let David down through the window, and he fled away and escaped. Michal took an image and laid it on the bed and put a pillow of goats’ hair at its head and covered it with the clothes. And when Saul sent messengers to take David, she said, “He is sick.” Then Saul sent the messengers to see David, saying, “Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may kill him.” And when the messengers came in, behold, the image was in the bed, with the pillow of goats’ hair at its head. Saul said to Michal, “Why have you deceived me thus and let my enemy go, so that he has escaped?” And Michal answered Saul, “He said to me, ‘Let me go. Why should I kill you?’ ” Now David fled and escaped, and he came to Samuel at Ramah and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and lived at Naioth. And it was told Saul, “Behold, David is at Naioth in Ramah.” Then Saul sent messengers to take David, and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as head over them, the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied. When it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, and they also prophesied. And Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they also prophesied. Then he himself went to Ramah and came to the great well that is in Secu. And he asked, “Where are Samuel and David?” And one said, “Behold, they are at Naioth in Ramah.” And he went there to Naioth in Ramah. And the Spirit of God came upon him also, and as he went he prophesied until he came to Naioth in Ramah. And he too stripped off his clothes, and he too prophesied before Samuel and lay naked all that day and all that night. Thus it is said, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”

1. Must Have A Desire for People To Be Saved, Not Killed

EXPLANATION

In this story we have Saul with a desire to see David Killed AGAIN
Throws the Spear
Plots to have him arrested and killed
But two people in this story have a desire to see David Saved
His wife loved him and didn't want him to die so she told him to escape and lied to her father. I am sure God used her, but I
don't believe she had the heart of God. Instead she was looking to her own interest.
But Jonathan had the heart of God. He spoke truth to his father. Jonathan had the heart of a Savior in that he wanted to
save the life of David. He had made an oath to David and was a honorable man.

ILLUSTRATION

Greatness is often shown more in little things than in great things. Babe Ruth had hit 714 home runs during his baseball
career and was playing one of his last full major league games. But the great Ruth was no longer as agile as he had once
been. He fumbled the ball and threw badly, and in one inning alone his errors were responsible for most of five runs. As he
walked off the field and headed toward the dugout, a lot of yelling and booing reached his ears. Just then a boy jumped
over the railing onto the playing field. With tears streaming down his face, he threw his arms around the legs of his hero.
Ruth didn’t hesitate for one second. He picked up the boy, hugged him, and set him down on his feet, patting his head
gently. Suddenly there was no more booing. In fact, hush fell over the entire park. In those brief moments, the fans saw two
heroes: Ruth, who in spite of his dismal day on the field could still care about a little boy; and the small lad, who cared about
the feelings of another human being. Both had melted the hearts of the crowd.

APPLICATION

We have to have a desire to do what we should which is often times seen as a hero. Jonathan was seen like this.
The first thing I believe we need to have the heart of a savior is we must want to see people live not die. I believe many are
pro-life in stances when it comes to abortions, but are we pro-life when it comes to feeding the hungry? clothing the poor?
our enemies? should we wish death or salvation for those who oppose us?
What do you do when you see that man or woman on the side of the road begging.
Matthew 25 :31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious
throne. 32 Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd
separates the sheep from the goats. 33 And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. 34 Then the King
will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the
foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger
and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to
me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you
drink? 38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39 And when did we see you
sick or in prison and visit you?' 40 And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of
these my brothers,[f] you did it to me.'
41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his
angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, 43 I was a stranger and you
did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ 44 Then they also will
answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister
to you?’ 45 Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did
not do it to me.’ 46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.

2. Must Love Not Hate

EXPLANATION

Matthew 5:43–48 ESV
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Jonathan and Mical acted out of Love.

ILLUSTRATION

Have you ever heard one child tell another child I will not be your friend unless you do so and so? This is putting conditions
on a friendship. Sometimes we forget that Jesus loves us unconditionally. He never says, “I’ll love you if....” He loves us
whether or not we read our Bible. He loves us whether or not we go to church. He even loves us whether or not we accept
Him as our lord and savior. What a friend we have in Jesus! (Lou Nicholes - Missionary/Author).

APPLICATION

Love for the Church
Love for those outside the church
Love for our enemies

3. Must Point Towards The Savior

EXPLANATION

Most important point:
We must want people Saved, we must love people, but we must also point to the savior.
Many try to save people
Many try to be the Hero
But we have a hero and he is the one who Saves. So we must point people to christ. If we dont we are not being loving,
we dont have a desire for people to get saved
I opened with WWII. I wonder if you know about Corrie?

ILLUSTRATION

"Corrie” ten Boom was a Dutch Christian watchmaker and later a writer who worked with her father, Casper ten Boom, her
sister Betsie ten Boom and other family members to help many Jews escape from the Nazis during the Holocaust in World
War II by hiding them in her home. She believed her actions were following the will of God. They were caught, and she was
arrested and sent to a concentration camp.
Corrie barely survived until the end of the war; her family members died in captivity. Seared by this terrible trial by fire,
Corrie’s faith in God also survived, and she spent much of her time in the post-war years traveling in Germany and
elsewhere in Europe, sharing her faith in Christ.
Her most famous book, The Hiding Place, is a biography that recounts the story of her family’s efforts and how she found
and shared hope in God while she was imprisoned at the concentration camp.

APPLICATION

ILLUSTRATION

Bonhoeffer
"Cheap grace is preaching forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without church discipline, Communion
without confession.... Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ, living
and incarnate."
