Welcome to Season 3 of the Crown series (1 Kings 1-11, 2 Chronicles 1-9)
Previous seasons: Saul (S1), David (S2)
Purpose: Review for some, preview for others
Ultimate theme: God's plan leading to Jesus Christ, eternal Son of David
Review of Previous Kings
Saul (First King)
Anointed by Samuel
Initially united fractured nation
Ultimately ineffective, disobedient, unrepentant
Obsessed with pursuing David
David (Second King)
"A man after God's own heart" despite flaws
Accomplishments:
Full of praise (Psalms)
Drew people to God
Secured Jerusalem as capital
Repentant when confronted with sin
God's covenant promise (2 Samuel 7:11-16)
Establish David's house/dynasty forever
David's offspring would build God's house
Kingdom and throne established forever
The Promise Fulfilled
Immediate: Through Solomon and Davidic line (until 586 BC)
Ultimate: Through Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:1)
God's grand plan: Bring about King Jesus
David's Unfulfilled Goal
Desire to build temple in Jerusalem
Not permitted because of bloodshed (1 Chronicles 22:5-10)
Solomon chosen as "man of peace" to build God's house
Succession Crisis
Question: "Who will be the next king?"
Adonijah (oldest surviving son) claims throne
Nathan and Bathsheba intervene
David declares Solomon as king

Lessons from Adonijah's Failure
Self-Promotion vs. Submission (1 Kings 1:5)
Put himself forward rather than accepting God's plan
Sought power and glory for himself
Contrast with Philippians 2:3-4 – humility and valuing others
Poor Counsel
Consulted only those who would agree with him
Avoided prophetic guidance
Ignored Solomon's later wisdom: "Plans fail for lack of counsel" (Proverbs 15:22)
Halfhearted Submission
Request for Abishag revealed contingency plan for rebellion
Pretended acceptance while plotting alternate path
Result: Solomon put him to death
Solomon's Reign Begins
