We are studying the synopsis of the four Gospels.
70. God’s Answering of Prayer - See no 187
Quick note I noticed that the reference for John didn’t show up, so go ahead and write 16:24 at the top of that section.
Matthew and Luke say almost exactly the same thing, word for word. Except Matthew uses a loaf of bread and stone as an example and Luke uses an egg and scorpion. Apart from that the words are almost identical.
While Johns gospel does not have a sermon per-say, it does have teachings of Jesus and he teaches them to “ask using my name.”
71. The Golden Rule
Matthew and Luke record the how we should do to others like we want them to do to us. Matthew adds that it is the essence of what the law and prophets teach.
72. The Two Ways
Mark and John say nothing about the two ways.
Matthew records two ways while Luke only talks about one way and say few find it.
73. By their Fruits - See no 82
Only Matthew and Luke talk about good and bad fruit.
Let’s notice some similarities and differences.
Similarities
recognized by fruit
illustration of figs and grapes
Differences
Mathew identifies the bad fruit as false prophets
Luke takes about the heart being the place that produces good and bad fruit
Matthew states that bad trees will be cut down and thrown into the fire
74. Saying Lord, Lord
Only Matthew and Luke record Jesus responding to people calling him Lord, Lord.
Luke is strait forward with their refusal to obey?
Matthew explains that doing great things without living with him as Lord will not benefit you!
75. House built on the Rock - See no 83
While Matthew and Luke they use different words, the idea remains the same. Obedience to his words leads to a house withstanding the floods and storms.
76. The effect of the Sermon
While all four gospels record people being amazed, only Matthew references his authority in a non synagogue teaching, Mark and luke’s responds to his teachings in the synagogues. John is a completely different situation, but all deal with people being amazed at his authority.
THE SERMON ON THE PLAIN
77. Occasion of the Sermon - See no 50
We have already discussed the occasion for Jesus’ different sermons.
78. The Beatitudes -See no 51
We have already looked at the Beatitudes.
79. The Woes
Only Luke records the woe’s so we have nothing to compare them to.
80. On Loving One’s Enemies
We have already discussed loving your enemies in our last discussion. But notice Luke goes into greater detail with his examples.
Note in their examples that Matthew uses Tax collectors and pagans while Luke uses the word Sinners.
81. On Judging - See no 68
We discussed judging others in a previous week so we do not have to go into that any further.
82. By their Fruits - See no 73
We just talked about this too.
83. The House Built upon the Rock - See no 75
Yup, done this too…
