Gospel contents
We have examined the gospel contents.
There are facts to believe regarding who Jesus is, why Jesus came, what Jesus did (suffered, died, rose again)
There are commands to obey, believe, confess, repent, be baptized, learn to keep commands, walk faithfully.
The good news of the gospel also contains.
Promises to receive (forgiveness of sins, be born again, eternal life, hope, eternal hope)
These are blessings of the gospel message that you have heard. We have looked at what the gospel is, what the gospel calls for us to do, to obey the gospel. This morning may we look at some of the blessings through the scripture.
Forgiveness of sins
Forgiveness of sins
Let me give you just a few of the scriptures.
Sins taken away (John 1:29) “29 The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”
Set free (Romans 6:17–18) “17 But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, 18 and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.”
Remembered no more (Hebrews 8:12) “12 “For I will be merciful to their iniquities, And I will remember their sins no more.””
These verses all deal with the totality and the gravity of the forgiveness of sins. God dealt with our sin by sending Jesus to be our sin offering.
The forgiveness of sins is only available through Jesus (Jn14:6).
Only through Christs blood (Ephesians 1:7) “7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace”
It is to satisfy the justice of God (have everyone turn there) (Romans 3:24–26) “24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; 25 whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed; 26 for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.”
A blessing that continues in Christ as we confess our sins (1Jn1:9)
(Transition) - Do you have the assurance that your sins are forgiven? Do you want that assurance? For there is still more encouragement to find as we look at other blessings from those who receive and obey the gospel.
The gift of eternal life
The gift of eternal life
Not what we deserve (Romans 6:23) “23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
That death is spiritual death with the end being the second death (Rev21:8)
But God! you have to love that phrase anytime you see it in the scripture, but God gives eternal life as I just read in (Rom6:23).
(Transtion) But wait there is more. Anytime I say that makes me think about game shows that use that phrase, or infomercials. Do you want what you deserve or what God graciously offers you? For there is more that He gives in regards to blessings.
Gift of the Holy Spirit
Gift of the Holy Spirit
Jesus promised gift (Jn7:37-39) and the apostles (Act2:38)
Engenders (which means to cause or give rise to feeling, station, or condition) Engenders a loving relationship with God (Gal4:6; Rom8:14-16)
Empowers you to be God’s instrument (Eph3:16, Rom 8:12-13, but maybe we better look in context on that, to Romans 8:12–16) “12 So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— 13 for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God,”
Enables us to be fruit bearers (Gal5:22-23)
Indwells in conjunction with the Word of God (1Cor6:19, Eph6:17) 1 Corinthians 6:19 “19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?”
(Transition) Nothing but the blood of Jesus can wash away your sins, and you have true forgiveness. It is by the Holy Spirit we have power and strength to walk in victory over sin, and helps us to continue to walk in the light. Yet there is more, more help, more blessings given.
Family of God
Family of God
The promise of family is a great thing.
Jesus calls those who do the will of the Father (Mt12:48-50)
A family consists of those who follow Him(Mk10:28-30)
The family is the church, the house of God (1 Timothy 3:15) “15 but in case I am delayed, I write so that you will know how one ought to conduct himself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth.”
Those who obey the gospel are added to the family (Acts 2:41) “41 So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls.” and may I add in (Acts 2:47) “47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.”
Now this part is not on the screen, but there are blessings as being a part of the family of God too. So, get your bibles ready, your fingers ready, here we go.
Blessings that we have a heavenly Father, a Father of all comfort (turn to 2 Corinthians 1:3–4) “3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”
Blessing of Jesus as our brother and High Priest (turn to Hebrews 2:11–12 “11 For both He who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are all from one Father; for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren, 12 saying, “I will proclaim Your name to My brethren, In the midst of the congregation I will sing Your praise.”” Then (turn to Hebrews 2:17–18) “17 Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.”
Blessing of the Spirit that gives us the familial love of God (Rom5:5, 8:14-16, turn to Galatians 4:6) “6 Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!””
Blessings of family to help carry our burdens, for we are not alone. (1Tim5:1-2, turn to Hebrews 3:12–16) “12 Take care, brethren, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God. 13 But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called “Today,” so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end, 15 while it is said, “Today if you hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts, as when they provoked Me.” 16 For who provoked Him when they had heard? Indeed, did not all those who came out of Egypt led by Moses?” but wait there is another passage that is important (turn to Galatians 6:1–2) “1 Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted. 2 Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ.”
(Transition) Are you a part of God’s family? do you want the love and support and strength of others to help you through this life? Let me sum this up now.
