Galatians 3:26 “26 So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith,”
we’ve talked about Galatians for a while now, We’ve learned we are God’s Children if we follow Jesus and that is the only way we can become God’s children. Last time we were together in here we learned that as God’s children we have direct access to God at all times. We can approach God at any moment. Last week though, we spent some time with our friends from Pleasant Garden Baptist Church and we played some games.
Show some pictures and talk about Games.
While you and I now belong to God. We are known by God, we have been freed from sin, Paul does acknowledge that there is a danger in being free. Let’s read what He says:
Galatians 4:8–9 “8 Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods. 9 But now that you know God—or rather are known by God—how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable forces? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again?”
Paul begins to explain that we know God, we know who God is, and we know that God will forgive us from our sins. So because we know that, we might fall into this trap that leads us to think:
It is OK to sin as long as I have Jesus.
I just want to say this morning, that it is not. We have to remember that our sin is what put Jesus on the cross. Will God pick us up when we fail? Absolutely He will. Will God forgive us when we mess up? Always. But:
Freedom in Christ is not freedom to sin.
And that’s the most important thing I really want us to think about.
I want you to meet somebody: As a matter of fact I will let you give him a name.
This guy seems like a good guy, there is a problem with him though. He’s in jail! now while he is in jail, he has a tv, an xbox, a computer, a kitchen, they bring his meals to him, a bed, a bathroom. He has ll the things he needs. But there is 1 problem, where is he? He’s in jail! While it does seem like he has everything he could ever need, he is still in jail. And there are a million other things he doesn't have access to because he is in jail. Can I tell you a little secret, He put himself in jail. He can leave whenever he wants. But he chooses to stay. It looks like freedom, but it isn’t.
That’s how sin works guys. It provides things for us and it makes us think those things are good for us. The things sin provide can be fun, but it traps you in a way that you won’t even notice your trapped. True freedom is not found in my ability to do what I want. If I always do what I want then I am a slave to my own feelings and desires. True freedom is found in Jesus, true freedom is being who God has called me to be and God has pulled us out of sin so we don’t have to live in this jail cell that satan has made for you.
