12 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

1. Paul starts this scripture by begging the Christians at Rome!

12 I beseech you therefore, brethren,

"I beseech you" means to urgently and earnestly beg or implore someone to do something...
There is an urgency in this. Paul is not just saying take your time in this!

2. His begging is based upon what God has done for them through His Son Jesus Christ!

12 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God,

Grace is not a license to sin but grace is the reason to not.

6 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? 3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: 6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7 For he that is dead is sfreed from sin. 8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: 9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. 10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. 11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. 12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. 13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. 16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? 17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. 18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

What is it he was begging them to do?

3. He was begging them to be a living sacrifice!

Note this it is a living sacrifice. Not a dead sacrifice. God is not the God of the dead. But the God of the living!

12 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice,

This takes its language from the Old Testament.
Explain the Old Testament Sacrificial system.
Expalin what Christ did for us and how He fulfilled that Old Testament sacrificial system.

2 Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, 2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: 3 If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious. 4 To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but mchosen of God, and precious, 5 Ye also, as lively stones, mmare built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. (

15 By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name. 16 But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased. 17 Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you. (

Why was he begging them to be a living sacrifice?

4. It was because the living sacrifice is what is holy and accepted by God!

Jesus is our example!
Submitting His entire life! The will of the Father!
The word Holy makes referene to being set apart from what is profane and dedicated to God in service.
In whom I am well pleased!
This is acceptable to God!
We die with Him and raise with Him in newness of life!

5. This is our reasonable service!

12 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

6. You cannot be a living sacrifice and live and think like the world lives and thinks!

2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind,

Compare if you will Romans chapter 1 to this.

7. When you line your life up with the Word of God you are able to distinguish between right and wrong, good and evil!

2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

11 Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing. 12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. 13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. 14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
