Big Idea: As we remain in the vine, we should tend Jesus’ sheep.

John 15:1–5 ESV
1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

Follow Jesus

agape vs phileo
competition vs care
who is primary in your life?
Don’t compare yourself to others. Jesus has a specific task for you.
Who do you love more than anything?

Pay attention to God’s Word

Your assumptions can get you in trouble
Your questions can cause you to over think things
It’s more than just preaching the Word.
Don’t make the Word say more or less than what it says.
The Word prunes you. It’s not just an instruction book of do’s and don’ts.
Do you actually live it?

Lay down your life for others

Sheep
1 John 3:16–18 ESV
16 By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. 17 But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? 18 Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.
Time as much as Treasure
Who do you need to love?
You can’t love sheep if you don’t remain in the vine.
Who do you love more than anything?
Are you living the Word?
Who do you need to love?
Community Group questions
Too often we compare our lives or our fruitfulness before God to other people. Why is this destructive?
How can we keep our eyes on Jesus rather than being comparative?
What does it look like to “eat of God’s Word as a sheep” for yourself? How would you encourage each other to do that regularly?
How important is it to be careful how we advise and counsel one another from God’s Word? How do you work at being careful about this?
We spend a lot of time thinking about our lives and “getting ahead” or even just “surviving.” Thinking like this is important at the level of being responsible with what God has given us. However, at the level of day to day doing what’s in front of you, how can we lay down our lives for others and truly love them?
