Our clothing, as Christians, ought to be Christ Himself! But of course that is a pretty strange picture. Beside that, we are told in scripture not only to put on Christ but to clothe ourselves in other ways, such as the clothing of a “new man” or the clothes of “mercy”.
If you will allow the liberty, this manner of speaking of clothing has both a tangible reality (Christ in us and on us we might say) and is a metaphor for our comportment, our behaviour, our appearance to ‘outsiders’ (that is, non-Christians). This sort of clothing is really the uniform of God’s family and His army.
In fact the or clothing or dress is something that shows up throughout scripture. When God communes with man He insists they wear the right clothes. The first to get a fashion make-over in this regard was Adam and Eve who were covered in simple animal skins as they were naked.
Now God was not ashamed of their nakedness but they were! And God afforded that couple from whom all humans are named with a uniform of sorts.
And this pattern of clothing would continue right through scripture, begining as already stated, with the first honeymooners and ending with another great wedding and the marriage supper of the Lamb of God. And, in that happy destiny,

and have been clothed with the new man that is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of the one who created it. Here there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all and in all. Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with a heart of mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if someone happens to have a complaint against anyone else. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also forgive others. And to all these virtues add love, which is the perfect bond.
