John 10:17-18; Luke 23:46; Psalm 31:5

Father Forgive them for they know not what they do
Today, thou shalt be with me in paradise
Mother, behold thy son. Behold thy mother
My God My God Why hast thou forsaken me?
I Thirst
It is Finished
“Father, into your hands I commend my Spirit”

I. The Submission (Luke 23:46 and Psalm 31)

John 10:17–18 “17 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. 18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.”
The first reason why these last words of Christ are significant is that it is a submission of what is about to happen. Jesus realizes that His work on the cross is done and now it is time to die
These words are actually a quote from Psalm 31:5. This entire Psalm is about David’s trust and commitment to God in the midst of his enemies. (Read the Psalm and compare to what Christ was enduring)
Jesus in these final seconds of His life is expressing a trust and a commitment to God’s plan, for He knows His Father is still in control of everything. It’s almost as if He is saying “My Father, whatever happens next, I trust you with what happens to my spirit”
Throughout His entire earthly life, Jesus was completely surrendered and submitted to the plan God had for Him
Luke 2:49 “49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?”
The Garden of Gethsemane
Now, there was nothing left to do on the cross. He had already endured its suffering, He had already bore our sins, He had already face the momentary forsaking of God for us… God had accepted Jesus’ offering and it was now time for Jesus to breathe His last.

II. The Sacrifice (John 10:17-18)

John 10:17–18 “17 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. 18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.”
The second reason why these words are so significant is that it shows Christ’s power in His Sacrifice. It shows us that man did not take His life, but rather Jesus laid it down willingly.
Man did not have the power to take Jesus’ life from Him. If Christ wanted to, He could’ve endured on the cross forever, but instead, Luke 23:46 says that He “gave up the Ghost” which means He voluntarily died.
He didnt die because His body gave out. He didnt die because He couldnt breathe. He didnt die because His heart quit working. He didnt die because He lost too much blood… He died because in that moment HE CHOSE TO.
This is a proof that Jesus is in fact God, for only God has the power to control when death comes.
John 10:15 KJV 1900
15 As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.
1 John 3:16 KJV 1900
16 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
John 15:13 KJV 1900
13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
The words “laid down” implies an act of the will. It is an action. Just like you lay down your Bible on the table, I am choosing to put it down. Its not being knocked out of my hands, I am laying it down. This is what Jesus did in this moment, He is laying His life down. But He wasnt just laying it down anywhere, He was laying it down in the hands of God the Father “Father into THY hands I commend My spirit”

III. The “Son Rise” (John 10:17-18)(John 20)

John 10:17–18 “17 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. 18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.”
The Third and final reason that these final words of Christ is significant is because of what they imply. If He has the power to lay down His life, then He has the power to take it back up again!
He had to die to finish the payment for our sins, but to prove He was God, He had to Rise again!
Technically, anyone can die for someone else, but only 1 person could die and then raise themselves back up from the dead!
Jesus was not the first person to be resurrected from the dead in Scripture, but He was the ONLY ONE Who did it of His own power! Every other person who was raised needed the power of another to raise them, but Jesus had all power within Himself. He had the “power to take it again”!
John 20.
No one took His body or moved His body, It wasnt there because He had taken up His life again and resurrected from the dead, never to die again!
Romans 6:9 “9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.”
His Resurrection showed His power over death and the grave
1 Corinthians 15:55 “55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?”
Because of the Resurrection, we have the promise of Eternal Life
John 11:25–26 “25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: 26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?”
John 14:19b “19b ...because I live, ye shall live also.”
Jesus was able to say “Father into thy hands I commend my spirit” because He knew that He would be taking it back up in 3 days. It was being kept safe until Jesus would take it back up again

Conclusion

Praise God that we serve a Savior Who was obedient unto death, even the death of the cross
Praise God that our Savior was not killed, but willingly laid down His life
Praise God that He didnt stay dead, but that He took it up again to live forevermore and all the blessings that come with that!
