Put On the New

Colossians 3:1–5 “If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.”
Passage: Colossians 3:10–25 “and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all. Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through…”
Colossians 3:10 “and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.”
   1. (vs. 10) Put on the new man.
         A. The New man is renewed in knowledge.
Where does this knowledge come from? From God! This Same Sovereign One (Thee Only One) gave to Holy men of God the Bible
2 Peter 1:21 “For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”
Why would we want to learn what the Bible has to offer? Some think it’s too much to learn something new. Aren’t we past learning?
(2 Peter 3:18 “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.” )
But Grow in Grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen!
This New man that we are being clothed with is in the image of our creator! He gave us His Word! His intention was that all men come to the knowledge of Him!
(1 Timothy 2:4 “who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” )

Colossians 3:12 “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,”
  B. The New man  is exclusive to be saved. (Vs. 12)
‘Elect—“Chosen People” - or elect of God, as scripture reminds us, is God’s way of communicating you are His people!
As His people there is a different way you walk and talk!  “as God’s chosen one” - Holy and beloved! What does that mean?
*Compassion! When was the last time you were burdened within?
The compassion Paul says comes out—in kindness, humility, a meek spirit, and patience. If you have a complaint— you don’t like the way they look at you.
As His people there is a different way you walk and talk!  “as God’s chosen one” - Holy and beloved! This is Paul’s definition of the People of God!
HOLY & BELOVED!!!Paul gives the church of Colossae a clear path to an elect’s new way of living! Remember in Ephesians he gives a similar list. But he tells them basically you are a soldier in a spiritual battle!
To the church of Colossae he says, put on… What are we putting on?
But we needed an over haul. This overhaul is no longer living with Old Man clothes!
We no longer need grave clothes, but grace clothes!
What does grace clothes look like? Often when someone dies they look different than when they were alive. They look better. It’s not the real them! But with grace clothes on the real you is on the inside.
What does that mean?
C. Compassionate hearts!
When was the last time you were burdened within? The compassion Paul says comes out — in kindness (warm hearted or gentle), humility (loneliness of mind) others are better than ones self, a meek (mild—even temperament) spirit, and patience (comes from the idea of a fort). Why would a person like you with so much power be so kind? Because Christ who has all power, forgave and give His life for you and me! (vs. 13)
Colossians 3:13 “bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.”
(VS. 14) Above all put on the clothes of charity (love in action) because this is the piece of clothing that unites us together in perfect harmony!
This piece of clothing allows for peace to control the heart according to verse 15! With that in mind you are then able to answer the call of the elect!
Holy and Beloved! “To which you were called in one body.”
And be ye thankful!
You might say how can I be thankful for my church, my family, my so called loved one (family that betrayed you). Let me tell you: You can! You must! But you can only do that if the word of Christ dwells in you richly!
Dwells — Meaning to live with! Not like the family member that is taking up a space in your house. Not like the family member who doesn’t pay the rent. Not like the family or unwanted guest that is in your way.
Richly - Paul said clearly “Dwell in you richly.”
Meaning you can’t move without feeling the effects of Christ in your life, in your home, in your thoughts, in your behavior!
* One of my deacons always would respond to my question how can I help you… With a stack of $100 bills and a stake. What if you had a home, a car, and a house like that? Every were you turned and every door you opened fell out a stack of $100 bills? You got to the point it bothered you. Oh, great another 100. Well here you go. You probably could use this, I know I can’t! I have too much of it in my house.
Colossians 3:16 “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”
The word of Christ was so dwelling in you it took control of your words (vs. 16), it took control of your teaching and living, it served as a warning against sin (you avoided sin like the plague or the virus!
