II. Courageously Pray to the Father
A. Jesus had been speaking in pictures
God’s House with many rooms (14:2)
Jesus being the way to the father (14:6)
The disciples as orphans (14:18)
A Helper (Paraclete) (14:15)
The vine and branches (15:1)
The labor pains of a woman (16:21)
B. The death and resurrection changed everything
Changed how Jesus instructed the disciples
Changed our position before God
But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,
No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.
Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
We now how direct access to the Father based on the authority of the Son
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
C. The ascension of Jesus gives us a promise of a future
III. Courageously have peace
A. Jesus compassionately warned them of the trials to come (29-32)
Much of the gospel of John is the progression of belief
Possibly sarcastic or excited
Jesus demonstrates where to have our focus in trials
B. Peace is not the absence of trails but confidence of God’s approval (33)
C. Jesus has overcome (33)
Major theme in Johann writings... 21 of the 24 verses
“O death, where is your victory?
O death, where is your sting?”
The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything.
He has conquered sin and death
He has conquered the ruler of this world
He has conquered our feelings
