The ministry of the Holy Spirit in sanctification
Sanctification in the life of a believer is only accomplished by the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12:13 indicates that the Holy Spirit is what baptizes us into the body of Christ. Hebrews 2:11 and 10:10 tell us that Christ is the one who makes us Holy. However, according to 1 Corinthians 1:31, it is the Holy Spirit that brings us into Christ. Once we come to Christ, the Holy Spirit continues to live with us and does the work of sanctification in our lives. Without the Holy Spirit, it is impossible for a person to believe in Christ or to live a holy life. 1 Corinthians 3:16-17; 6:19-20. The Holy Spirit sanctifies us by giving us a second birth. “Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” 1 Corinthians 6:11. This is an experience that takes place on a believer’s life when he/she accepts Christ and is born again. 1Peter 1:2; 2:9.
Paul refers to the time that he was enslaved by sin as a time that he was controlled by his sinful nature. Romans 7:14, 24-25. It was because of his sinful nature that he could not rise above sin and was unable to obey the holy and perfect law of God. Throughout chapter 8 of the book of Romans, he declares the work of the Holy Spirit. He refers to the Holy Spirit as the life giving Spirit that freed mankind from slavery of the law. He translates the work that was done by the death resurrection ascension of Christ in our lives. He enables us to live that life that God has envisioned for us. He gives us the strength and the ability to say no to our flush and enables us to do God’s will instead. He allows us to bear the fruits of the Spirit as stated on Galatians 5:22. Those are the characters that were displayed in Jesus and having those characters in our lives makes us look more like Jesus. This is why it is very important for believers to experience and s seek being filled with the Holy Spirit daily in their walk with Christ.
