21 But that ye also may know my affairs, and how I do, Tychicus, a beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, shall make known to you all things: 22 Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose, that ye might know our affairs, and that he might comfort your hearts.
1. The Titles
1. The Titles
a.) A Beloved Brother
21 But that ye also may know my affairs, and how I do, Tychicus, a beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, shall make known to you all things:
Paul uses the name, “Brother” indicating they came from the same place - Jesus
10 He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. 11 But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.
It’s not always common for brothers to be lovely, but it should be common for brothers to always love
7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. 8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. 9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. 10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.
20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
Tychicus should not be a unique or rare example of brotherly love… We should all live like this...
Could you be described as a beloved brother?
b.) A Faithful Minister
21 But that ye also may know my affairs, and how I do, Tychicus, a beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, shall make known to you all things:
A minister is a servant: one who executes the commands of another
Someone who is willing to run through the dust...
Run the errands...
Attend, wait or serve in any way without hesitation?
Look at Paul’s definition of a servant:
2 Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.
Could you be described as a Faithful Minister?
7 All my state shall Tychicus declare unto you, who is a beloved brother, and a faithful minister and fellowservant in the Lord:
Could you be described as a fellowservant?
2. The Tidings
2. The Tidings
21 But that ye also may know my affairs, and how I do, Tychicus, a beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, shall make known to you all things:
15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:
One of Tychicus’ missions was to bring information about what was taking place with Paul to other churches...
It’s important to be intricately involved in the work...
3. The Tasks
3. The Tasks
a.) He was sent by Paul to Ephesus
21 But that ye also may know my affairs, and how I do, Tychicus, a beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, shall make known to you all things:
b.) He was sent by Paul to Colosse
7 All my state shall Tychicus declare unto you, who is a beloved brother, and a faithful minister and fellowservant in the Lord: 8 Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose, that he might know your estate, and comfort your hearts; 9 With Onesimus, a faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. They shall make known unto you all things which are done here.
c.) He was sent by Paul to Titus in Crete
12 When I shall send Artemas unto thee, or Tychicus, be diligent to come unto me to Nicopolis: for I have determined there to winter.
d.) He was sent by Paul to Ephesus again
12 And Tychicus have I sent to Ephesus.
22 Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose, that ye might know our affairs, and that he might comfort your hearts.
Tychicus was ministering by being Paul’s right hand man… or messenger
“Don’t be consumed with the thought of whose standing by your side, but whose side you’re standing by.”
Focus on who you can serve, not just who can serve you...
Tychicus was:
A servant
Minister
Messenger
Comforter
It appears that Tychicus delivered the book of Ephesians to the Ephesian church and Colossians to the church at Colosse...
He helped continue the Apostle Paul’s work while he wasn’t able to…
***Whose ministry are you helping continue?
Elisha ministered to Elijah...
Aaron and Hur held up the hands of Moses on that mountain top...
Onesiphorus refreshed Paul and sought him out in Rome...
Or Epaphroditus who:
25 Yet I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, and companion in labour, and fellowsoldier, but your messenger, and he that ministered to my wants. 26 For he longed after you all, and was full of heaviness, because that ye had heard that he had been sick. 27 For indeed he was sick nigh unto death: but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow. 28 I sent him therefore the more carefully, that, when ye see him again, ye may rejoice, and that I may be the less sorrowful. 29 Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness; and hold such in reputation: 30 Because for the work of Christ he was nigh unto death, not regarding his life, to supply your lack of service toward me.
