Slow to Speak

James 1:19–21 NIV
My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.

My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,

Three Ways

quick to listen
slow to speak
slow to anger

Listen

listening enables you to recognise the truth
Matthew 15:10 NIV
Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand.
Jesus was telling a parable
the principle is universal

Benefits of Listening

gives time for the Spirit to minister
takes heat out of the situation
ensures that you pay attention
makes the speaker the focus
listen to understand

Speaking

speaking will get you into trouble never listening
Proverbs 10:19 NIV
Sin is not ended by multiplying words, but the prudent hold their tongues.
another warning
Proverbs 21:23 NIV
Those who guard their mouths and their tongues keep themselves from calamity.
and again
Proverbs 13:3 NIV
Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.
Proverbs 17:27 NIV
The one who has knowledge uses words with restraint, and whoever has understanding is even-tempered.

Human Anger

James 1:20 NIV
because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.
human anger is the problem
there is righteous anger - not the issue here
anger is bred out of frustration
not forgiving someone, holding a grudge
hanging on to trauma or evil done against you
comes out of our emotions!
James 4:1 NIV
What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you?
twists our responses - does not produce righteousness
does not produce freedom
leads to much more
Colossians 3:8 NIV
But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.
the divine solution
Ephesians 4:26 NIV
“In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry
good principle to follow
can be difficult to do
we really like to get full value out of our anger
anger is a door way - must be careful

Righteousness of God

be holy as I am holy
walk as Jesus walked
live as jesus lived
anger does not produce behaviour pleasing to God
anger can lead to all kinds of sins
James 1:21 NIV
Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.

No Moral Filth

must lock in holiness and righteousness
put aside all that is not godly
close the doors that allow the devil to roam
remove every evil suggestion

Accept the Word

term used is humbly accept the word
the word planted in you
original word of salvation
ongoing word for salvation
2 Timothy 3:14–15 NIV
But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
continue in the word
allow the word to change your position
we are a new creation
we are a holy nation, a royal priesthood
we belong to the Kingdom
displaying righteousness that God desires

Convinced

know the truth
do more than just knowing
live the truth
