Sexual Sin and the Scriptures

When reading Genesis, a person does not have to read too far to discover that sin and brokenness has permeated every area of life, including the area of sexuality. We read about polygamy, incest, sexual assault, and people acting out on their same sex attraction by falling into the sin of homosexuality. In Jesus’ sermon on the mount, Jesus himself says that anyone who looks at another person with lustful intent, that person has sinned sexually in the heart. Jesus’ point is that we have all sinned sexually and we all need a heart transformed by the Gospel in order to deal with sexual sin in our own lives. With this as our foundation, when we talk about same sex attraction, we need to understand that this is an issue that some people will struggle with, but because they struggle with same sex attraction, it doesn’t make them different than the person struggling with other sexual passions.
Paul when writing to the church in Corinth about sexual sin, he says something very interesting, he tells the church of Corinth not to associate with sexually immoral people, then Paul says I am not talking about the sexually immoral of the world, if that were the case then you would need to get out of this world. Paul is making the same point as Jesus, we are all sexual sinners in one form or another and the answer to our sexual sin is Jesus and the Gospel. The answer to someone tempted to having premarital sex, is the Gospel, the answer to someone tempted to commit adultery is the Gospel, the answer to those who deal with same sex attraction is the Gospel.
We as FBC we are Gospel people, we are people transformed by the Gospel. Which means are initial reaction to those struggling with same sex attraction shouldn’t be condemnation, judgement, or even separation. Our reaction should be the Gospel of Grace, we should point them to Jesus and show them how Jesus is the answer to their struggle with same sex attraction. As a church we should lean into their struggle and point people to the glorious Gospel of grace which will empower those who deal with same sex attraction to overcome their struggle in this area of life.
