Transformed by Glory: Encountering Christ in His Splendor

Transformed by Glory: Encountering Christ in His Splendor
Bible Passage: Mark 9:1-13
Summary: In Mark 9:1-13, the narrative of the Transfiguration reveals Jesus in His divine glory alongside Moses and Elijah, providing a glimpse of His heavenly authority and impending suffering. This experience transforms the disciples' understanding of Jesus and foreshadows both His death and resurrection.
Application: This passage encourages Christians to recognize that true transformation occurs through an encounter with Christ. In the struggles of daily life, it reminds us that Jesus' glory can dispel our doubts and fears, helping us to find strength in our own faith journeys as we seek to reflect His image in our lives.
Teaching: The sermon will teach that the Transfiguration not only affirms Christ’s divine identity but also establishes the importance of listening to Him. It emphasizes the need for believers to seek deeper experiences of God’s glory that reshape our values and priorities.
How this passage could point to Christ: The Transfiguration points to Jesus as the fulfillment of the Law (Moses) and the Prophets (Elijah), revealing His role as the ultimate revelation of God. It emphasizes His glory and serves as a precursor to the resurrection, highlighting the significance of His suffering and victory for all believers.
Big Idea: Our encounters with Christ in His glory lead to profound transformation, urging us to listen to Him and follow wherever He leads, especially in our times of suffering and uncertainty.
Recommended Study: As you prepare this sermon, consider exploring the theological implications of the Transfiguration in relation to the Old Testament, especially the significance of Moses and Elijah's presence. Utilize your Logos library to examine the relevant commentaries that discuss the text's historical context and the original Greek. Pay attention to how various scholars interpret the intention of Jesus' words about His suffering, as this could enrich your understanding of the text's application in today's context.
When was in high school we only had one tv channel that came super clear and I used the TV as my timer for when I had to get to the Bus I would only halfway watch the morning cartoon as I got dress and ready for school And there was one show I am super embarrassed I watched because the storyline was always the same
It was like watching the Bulls in the 90s it was they are going to win we all know…
Or Like watching the Packer vs Bears up until this season we all knew what was going to happen Packers win
But this show I would watch was power rangers
With Cheesy monster and crazy movement to let people know they were talking in their helmets
But the best thing about the show was when the transformed to receive more power The enemy had no clue what they were in for up until that point they might have been winning But now Change is Going to Come
Mark Chapter 9:2-13
2 After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. 3 His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. 4 And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus.
5 Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 6 (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.)
7 Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”
8 Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.
9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10 They kept the matter to themselves, discussing what “rising from the dead” meant.
11 And they asked him, “Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”
12 Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah does come first, and restores all things. Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer much and be rejected? 13 But I tell you, Elijah has come, and they have done to him everything they wished, just as it is written about him.”
Six days is after Peter whiplash from one second being praised for what the holy sprit revied to to him and the next being called Satan….
This after telling them they must die to follow…
Not all a literal death but the idea that the will of the father must go first.
This 6 days after
1. Ascent to Glory
Mark 9:1-4
The First question was why just those 3 why not bring the sceptic (Thomas) or Judas…
In this Holy sprit filled life
God is giving us what is need not according to how great we are but how great our need is!
God is Giving is what we need not according to how great we are but how great our need is!
When Moses was on a similar mount top he asked to see the face of God
God say no you would die!
So you can see the back of me
And Before Jesus would go to the Cross, they begin the process of the death Moses avoided
They saw the Face of God.
Reflecting Off Jesus
Up until this point there might have been some doubt
Up until this moment they Knew human Jesus
They knew full Man
Who Giggle and laughed
Who hugged them and Loved
Who sometime had to use the bathroom
Up until this point they thought they knew him
Church it’s time that we know Jesus
He is Not slot machine for changing our circumstances
He is Not political tool for vote
He is Not a means to fundraise
He is not a catalyst for Church growth
Yes Church he can do all that
But first and Most of all
He is my love
He is My all
He is the blood that run through my vaines
He is the reason I woke up
And Most importantly he is God
This Mount top wasn’t a one time thing for these men
It was writing about once but it is a daily moment we can have with Jesus
As live this live with jesus we meet him on this Holy Ground
2. Shelter in Christ's Word
Mark 9:5-8
Maybe you can explore Peter's impulsive response to the Transfiguration. While overwhelmed by the experience, Peter suggests building shelters, yet God's voice interrupts and instructs them to listen to Jesus. This emphasizes reliance not on human plans but divine guidance. It challenges believers to trust Christ and seek His direction in moments of bewilderment and awe. This passage calls us to resist our urge to control situations and instead allow God's voice to direct our lives, especially when faced with uncertainty and fear.
I understand peter here I get it!
I got to do something God I know you for myself I have to do something….
And God says….
Listen to Jesus
No alter, no new temple, No sacrifice
Just listen to Jesus
Peter was always the loudest
Peter was always asking the most questions and doing the most like walking on water.
This is the same message Jesus gave Martha
Just Listen
Feel my heart as beats
Throughout the miracles
Feel you love my while you dare to ask the question don’t you care
I am crazy for you so much so I paid the cost I lifted
Just listen
Find shelter in my words
Find Purpose in my Words
Find love in my words like you have never known before
3. Descending into Hope
Mark 9:9-13
You could address Jesus' message about His forthcoming suffering, which He shares as they descend the mountain. The command to keep the experience secret until after His resurrection underscores the in completion of His journey without suffering and victory. This reminds Christians that glory is intertwined with suffering and that to follow Christ means embracing both. It prepares us to endure hardships with hope, knowing that Christ’s glory is revealed through His death and resurrection, inviting us to participate in His suffering as part of our transformation.
This why those brothers were running last Sunday all those years ago that remember his words
As they Came down that mount
they understood their journey would be marked with suffering
Imagine a carrot, an egg, and coffee beans all in boiling water. The carrot softens, the egg hardens, but the coffee beans change the water itself. When faced with suffering, we can choose to be like the coffee beans, transforming the environment around us with joy and faith. Walking with Christ through our difficulties is not just about enduring; it's about thriving amidst trials, bringing light into dark situations.
