1 The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the Lord God had made. One day he asked the woman, “Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?”
2 “Of course we may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,” the woman replied.
3 “It’s only the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden that we are not allowed to eat. God said, ‘You must not eat it or even touch it; if you do, you will die.’ ”
4 “You won’t die!” the serpent replied to the woman.
5 “God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.”
6 The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too.
7 At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.
8 When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man and his wife heard the Lord God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the Lord God among the trees.
9 Then the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”
10 He replied, “I heard you walking in the garden, so I hid. I was afraid because I was naked.”
11 “Who told you that you were naked?” the Lord God asked. “Have you eaten from the tree whose fruit I commanded you not to eat?”
12 The man replied, “It was the woman you gave me who gave me the fruit, and I ate it.”
13 Then the Lord God asked the woman, “What have you done?” “The serpent deceived me,” she replied. “That’s why I ate it.”
14 Then the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, you are cursed more than all animals, domestic and wild. You will crawl on your belly, groveling in the dust as long as you live.
15 And I will cause hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.”
16 Then he said to the woman, “I will sharpen the pain of your pregnancy, and in pain you will give birth. And you will desire to control your husband, but he will rule over you.”
17 And to the man he said, “Since you listened to your wife and ate from the tree whose fruit I commanded you not to eat, the ground is cursed because of you. All your life you will struggle to scratch a living from it.
18 It will grow thorns and thistles for you, though you will eat of its grains.
19 By the sweat of your brow will you have food to eat until you return to the ground from which you were made. For you were made from dust, and to dust you will return.”
INTRODUCTION:
A- Background
1- Creation
2- The scriptural testimony, “And God saw that it was good.”
3- Last of all, God created man and woman (Genesis 1:27,31)
So God created human beings* in his own image.
In the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was very good!
And evening passed and morning came, marking the sixth day.
B- The first man and woman made some mistakes that were costly. We make some of the same mistakes.
I- LEAVING GOD OUT OF DECISION-MAKING. (Genesis 3:1-6)
I- LEAVING GOD OUT OF DECISION-MAKING. (Genesis 3:1-6)
A- Adam & Eve left god out of their decision about eating the fruit. (Genesis 3:6)
A- Adam & Eve left god out of their decision about eating the fruit. (Genesis 3:6)
6 The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too.
1- It is never wise to leave God out of our decision-making.
a. He is the one who sees and understands everything. (Revelation 1:14)
14 His head and his hair were white like wool, as white as snow. And his eyes were like flames of fire.
(Genesis 16:13)
13 Thereafter, Hagar used another name to refer to the Lord, who had spoken to her. She said, “You are the God who sees me.” She also said, “Have I truly seen the One who sees me?”
b. He provides perfect guidance for all decisions if we will allow him to. (Prov. 3:5-6)
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.
6 Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.
B- Adam & Eve excluded God by willful choices:
B- Adam & Eve excluded God by willful choices:
1- They made the willful choice to do what God had expressly commanded them not to do.
(Genesis 2:16-17)
16 But the Lord God warned him, “You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden—
17 except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die.”
(Genesis 3:6)
6 The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too.
(Romans 3:23)
23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.
2- They made the choice to hide when they heard God calling them. (Genesis 3:8)
8 When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man and his wife heard the Lord God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the Lord God among the trees.
(Ps 139:7–10)
7 I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence!
8 If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there.
9 If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans,
10 even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me.
II- LOOKING TO THE WRONG SOURCE FOR FULFILLMENT. (Genesis 3:1-8)
II- LOOKING TO THE WRONG SOURCE FOR FULFILLMENT. (Genesis 3:1-8)
A- Adam & Eve listened to the deceiver as he caused them to question God. (Genesis 3:1, 4-5)

1 The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the Lord God had made. One day he asked the woman, “Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?”
4 “You won’t die!” the serpent replied to the woman.
5 “God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.”
1- Satan begins by planting doubts about God:
a- Satan clouds what God says to create misconceptions in our minds. (Genesis 3:1)
1 The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the Lord God had made. One day he asked the woman, “Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?”
b- Satan contradicts what God says to cause doubt about God’s trustworthiness and wisdom. (Genesis 3:4)
4 “You won’t die!” the serpent replied to the woman.
c- Satan complicates obedience to what God says by inciting our desire for control. (Genesis 3:5)
5 “God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.”
B- Adam & Eve lusted for better things than God had given to them. (Genesis 3:6)

1- Satan made the forbidden fruit to appear to be superior to what God had supplied in three ways:
a. He made it appear better for the body. (Craving for physical pleasure)
b. He bade it appear better to look at (more beautiful and pleasing to the eyes). (craving for what we see)
c. He made it appear to be a better for the mind (able to lead to wisdom- to be as wise as God). (Pride in personal achievements and possessions)
(1 John 2:16)
16 For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world.
C- Adam & Eve found that the pathway they had chosen did not fulfill their needs. (Genesis 3:7)
C- Adam & Eve found that the pathway they had chosen did not fulfill their needs. (Genesis 3:7)
7 At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.
1- The pathway the chose produced feelings of self-consciousness and guilt, where none existed before. (Genesis 2:25; 3:10)
25 Now the man and his wife were both naked, but they felt no shame.
10 He replied, “I heard you walking in the garden, so I hid. I was afraid because I was naked.”
a. They could no longer live with a clear conscience. (Philippians 1:20)
20 For I fully expect and hope that I will never be ashamed, but that I will continue to be bold for Christ, as I have been in the past. And I trust that my life will bring honor to Christ, whether I live or die.
2- Satan paid them in counterfeit currency!
(John 8:44)
44 For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.
(John 10:10)
10 The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.
III- LYING ABOUT THE PROBLEM OF SIN. (Genesis 3:9-13)

12 The man replied, “It was the woman you gave me who gave me the fruit, and I ate it.”
13 Then the Lord God asked the woman, “What have you done?” “The serpent deceived me,” she replied. “That’s why I ate it.”
1- Adam blamed Eve.
2- Eve blamed the snake (Satan)
3- Neither of them wanted to accept responsibility for their actions.
4- Ultimately, sin is a matter of personal choice. (James 1:13-15)
13 And remember, when you are being tempted, do not say, “God is tempting me.” God is never tempted to do wrong, and he never tempts anyone else.
14 Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away.
15 These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death.
B- Adam & Eve bought severe consequences through their sin. (Genesis 3:16-19)

19 By the sweat of your brow will you have food to eat until you return to the ground from which you were made. For you were made from dust, and to dust you will return.”
1- The loss of innocence.
2- The loss of fellowship with God.
3- The loss of paradise home.
An endless supply of food
A painless existence
4- The loss of immortality
5- The knowledge that all future generations would be affected by their sin. (Romans 5:12)
12 When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned.
C- Adam & Eve’s sin brought the need for the redemption God provided.
C- Adam & Eve’s sin brought the need for the redemption God provided.
(Genesis 3:21, 14-15)
21 And the Lord God made clothing from animal skins for Adam and his wife.
1- God had to provide the covering for man’s disgrace.
(Genesis 3:21)
21 And the Lord God made clothing from animal skins for Adam and his wife.
(1 John 2:2)
2 He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins—and not only our sins but the sins of all the world.
2- God promised the ultimate redemption to deal with man’s sin. (Genesis 3:15)
15 And I will cause hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.”
(Romans 5:6-8)
6 When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners.
7 Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good.
8 But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.
3- God’s redemption makes all things new.
(2 Corinthians 5:17)
17 This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!
(Revelation 21:5)
5 And the one sitting on the throne said, “Look, I am making everything new!” And then he said to me, “Write this down, for what I tell you is trustworthy and true.”
CONCLUSION:
A- Don’t make the same mistakes that Adam & Eve made. Sin is not to be toyed with. One songwriter wrote:
Verse 1
As a child, I foolishly turned God away,
Not knowing the heartbreak a sinner must pay,
But God, in His goodness, has let me return,
To share with His children this lesson I learned,
Verse 2
So with pleasure and promises, Sin took control,
Leaving me dying, with nothing to show,
Gone were my loved ones, and my dearest friends,
Only a Saviour could love me again.
Chorus
Sin will take you farther than you want to go,
Slowly, but wholly, taking control,
Sin will leave you longer than you want to stay,
Sin will cost you far more than you want to pay.
