Video: Against All Odds
Title of the Message this Morning is:
No One Knows
No One Knows
Main idea:
The day and the hour of Christ’s return remain a mystery in spite of our speculation and prediction.
Because of this we are encouraged to keep watch, to stay awake, and to recognize the seasons around us.
We do not know when God will return, but in the meantime, we are called to live bold and confident lives of faith, being willing to share the gospel with others.
Prayer:
“Lord, thank you for giving us all the information we need to live bold and confident lives before you.
Give us strength to remain awake and diligent as we await your return.
Bring people into our lives that need to hear the good news of salvation.”
Scripture: Mark 13:24-37, Isaiah 55:8-9, Deuteronomy 29:29
(All scripture is taken from the NIV unless otherwise noted)
Introduction
Introduction
We all like to know what’s going on don’t we?
And it’s difficult sometimes to admit that you don’t have the answers, or the insight, or the knowledge to apply to one situation or another.
Maybe this is the motive behind our fascination with and endless speculation over the “end of days?”
Maybe we have a hard time with the fact that Jesus said so clearly, “No one knows the day or the hour.”
Honestly…we don’t like His answer.
Instead, We like to think of ourselves as people of understanding and knowledge.
If nothing else, the enlightenment taught us that we are people of reason and capacity and intellect and insight.
As author/speaker Marie Forleo wrote, “Everything is Figureoutable.”
And frankly, with Google, YouTube, and the internet at our fingertips, we CAN figure out most things.
We CAN master most any skill given enough time and motivation.
So it reasons that we should be able to figure out when Jesus is returning… And prepare accordingly.
There’s only one problem with this line of thinking…
It’s in direct contradiction to what we’ve been told.
Not to mention, as God tells the prophet Isaiah;
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” - Isaiah 55:8-9
The way that God thinks about time, space, eternity, and everything else is different than the way we think about it.
I’d even say that His ways of thinking are the right ones, and that we know as much as He wants us to know.
This is the sentiment shared in both Deuteronomy 29:29 and Romans 11:33;
“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.” Deuteronomy 29:29
So, with that in mind, for the rest of our time together today I am going to focus on what we can know and what impact His words may have on our day to day living.
Main Teaching
Main Teaching
Let’s begin with a full reading of our passage for today;
Read Mark 13:24-37
In these verses, Jesus unveils a mystery that has intrigued believers throughout the ages—the precise timing of His return.
Let us remember that while the day and hour remain unknown to us, the Lord has given us clear instructions on how to live in anticipation of His imminent return…
We focus on what we can know and we trust that God has kept the secret things to Himself for one reason or another.
By faith we believe that He knows best.
The Mystery of Timing
The Mystery of Timing
(Mark 13:24-32)
In this first section we get some interesting imagery that sounds a lot like the something you might read in the book of Revelation.
What does it mean that the stars will fall from the sky and that the sun will grow dark…
And…when that happens we should expect to see the Son of Man coming?
I have to be honest, if that were to happen I think a lot of us would simply die from the shock of it all… Clearly, God’s ways are not like our ways.
One commentator says, “Often these apocalyptic cosmic events are used to describe the fall of governments.
And either way, this is exactly why it’s so difficult to interpret the end times.
There are so many different angles or perspectives we can take on what Jesus is saying here.
Even the fig tree seems to indicate that we’ll be able to discern the “season” and therefore have a good idea about what’s going to happen next…
The problem of course with this is our human desire for understanding.
We’re left with an unknown.
We’re left knowing that no one knows, and that no one will know the exact time when Jesus will return.
So what are we to do in the meantime?
How are we going to respond to the mystery of timing?
Thankfully, the next section of Mark gives us some direction…
The Call to Stay Awake and Alert
The Call to Stay Awake and Alert
(Mark 13:33-37)
In this passage we see the idea of being a “watchman” referenced.
In biblical times, a "watchman" played a crucial role in the community, particularly in the context of cities and fortified settlements.
The term "watchman" is mentioned in various passages in the Bible, and their function was primarily to keep a lookout and provide security for the city or community they served.
As proverbial watchmen, we are called to be spiritually awake, discerning the signs of the times.
How do we keep watch?
How do we grow in wisdom and discernment?
How do we know if this decade is worse off than the last?
Our faithfulness lies in staying attuned to God's voice through prayer, scripture, and the leading of the Holy Spirit.
We know for certain that,
“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.” (Mark 13:31)
So we invest in the word of God.
We read the bible and seek to understand the voice of the Lord through the Holy Spirit in our lives.
In doing so, we can live a life of readiness in a chaotic and unpredictable world.
Even though we don’t know when Jesus will return, we know that He will return someday.
And because of this, we live with boldness and confidence as we share the gospel with others.
Our urgency stems from the fact that we don’t know how long we have left, we just know that for as long as we have the opportunity to, we need to share the gospel with others.
Bold Faith in the Face of Imminent Return
Bold Faith in the Face of Imminent Return
Earlier in Mark 13 Jesus says,
“And the gospel must first be preached to all nations.” Mark 13
So again, we know for certain that the gospel must be shared with everyone before the return of Christ.
Amid all of life’s uncertainties, we know that the great commission is our imperative command…
Read Matthew 28:18-20
One of the important things to remember about the great commission is that Jesus promises to be with us always, to the very end…
What an encouraging and uplifting reality…
Another promise that we can be certain of.
Pastor -
In my own life, I've seen how timing plays a crucial role in God's plan.
I remember waiting for a job opportunity that seemed perfect.
As I waited, I found comfort in Mark 13:32, trusting that only the Father knows the right moment.
Eventually, though the wait was hard, I discovered a more fulfilling path had opened up, aligning perfectly with God’s timing, showing me that sometimes His delays are actually divine setups.
Let us not be hindered by fear or doubt but share the gospel freely, for it is the power of salvation to all who believe.
Let us not get overly consumed with knowing the exact times or dates of Jesus' return, but rather let us be consumed with sharing the gospel with others.
As we await His return, let our lives be a testament to the transformative power of a relationship with Christ.
Conclusion
Conclusion
Love ones, as we navigate the mystery of the unknown hour, let us fix our gaze on the revealed truths: the certainty of Christ's return, the call to stay awake and alert, and the imperative to live a life of bold faith.
May we be found faithful, eagerly awaiting the glorious return of our Lord and Savior.
May we:
“press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of us.” Philippians 3:12-14.
As I said before, Let us not get overly consumed with knowing the exact times or dates of Jesus' return, but rather let us be consumed with sharing the gospel with others.
Remember:
Mark 13 teaches us about the signs of the end times, emphasizing the uncertainty of timing. Consider the biblical figure Noah, who preached for years about impending rain—years of no sign until the flood came suddenly. His faithfulness in warning others illustrates the importance of being prepared and trusting God's timing, even when it feels like nothing is happening.

Salvation:
Salvation:
The Word of God says in: John 3:16
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you’d would like to receive Jesus today, please pray this prayer with all of us:
Lord I believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and that He died On the cross for my sins and His resurrection from the dead gives me eternal life. I ask forgiveness of my sins, and I accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Amen.

I want to take a few moments to give you the opportunity to ask forgiveness of any sin in your life.
Let us pray over the elements (Cross Exposed) in the name of the father, the son, and the Holy Ghost
Read first Corinthians 11:23- 26 - (Taking the elements together)
23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread;
24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” (take bread)
25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
(Take Cup)
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.
