Baby Photo

Hey guys, check out this photo. This is a photo of the newest addition to my family Judah Micah Allen Blade! He was born on this past Friday and we brought him home on Resurrection Sunday!
How many of you know what number child this is? Yes this is number 7, 5 girls and 2 boys, Judah is number 7.
Knowing that I have 7 kids, do you think that there are rules in my house?
What would it be like in my house if there were not rules? Would that be fair to my children?
Yes I have rules in my house and the reason why I have these rules is to protect those who are in my house and the house itself.
Just like I have rules in my house out of love for those who are in my house. God has given His people the Law out of Love for them, and that is what we are going to talk about today. Gods Law.

Question- What is the law of God stated in the Ten Commandments?

Big Idea- God showed his moral law to the Israelites in the ten commandments.

Take Aways

God gave His command so His people could understand how to interact with Him and others.
Gods commandments show His standard of Holiness and perfection.
God gave His commands in a different way so all can know they are from Him and not from man.
We are going to start by looking at how the 10 commandments were delivered to to the people Exodus 19:3 And the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I come to you in the thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with you, and believe you forever.” So Moses told the words of the people to the Lord.
He gave his commands in such a way so that all will know that these commands are from God and not man.
Now we will go through the ten commandments in Exodus 20.
Exodus 20:1–3 NKJV
And God spoke all these words, saying: “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. “You shall have no other gods before Me.
Here is commandment number one. What does it mean to have no other Gods before Him?
When God says that we are to have no other Gods before Him it means that we are not to worship anything or to make anything as important or more important then God. He is the only God and is to be placed as the most important thing in all of our lives.
Exodus 20:4–6 NKJV
“You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
What does it mean to make a carved image or likeness?
What this means is that they are not to make anything that looks like another being whether in heaven or on earth. The reason why is because mankind tends to worship things that are created recognizing them as gods instead of worshipping the creator. God, Lord of all. This law keeps our focus on Him and takes us away from false worship.
Exodus 20:7 NKJV
“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
What exactly does it mean to take the Lord’s name in vain?
To use the Lords name in vain primarily is to use Gods name as a guarantee for something or to swear by His name as if we have the power to ensure He will do something if whatever we used His name for fails.
Have you ever heard someone say something or promise something then say “on my mamma”, or on my “dead relative” or so on and so forth? its like doing that in God’s name. Also in several parts of the Bible God says that we are to commit to our word, or yes’s are to be yes’s and our no’s no’s, we should not have to swear on anything to be truthful.
Matthew 5:33–37 NKJV
“Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.’ But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne; nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.
The use of the Lords name in vain is also misusing His name in any way, including taking His name lightly, mocking His name, or speaking about Him and or His name disrespectfully.
Why is is a problem to use God’s name in vain?
Because He is HOLY and we are to treat Him as such!
Exodus 20:8–11 NKJV
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
What is the sabbath?
The sabbath is the stopping day, a day of rest where regular work is not done and instead people are to focus on God giving Him that day.
This is for one of two reasons, and they are both for the health of mankind. One is to give man rest from his labor and the other is to place God in His place as the most important thing in our lives and focus on Him.
Exodus 20:12 NKJV
“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
To honor your parents means to show them respect and to treat them well.
The parents are the authority in a child's life and they have been given authority over the children by God and are representatives of God in the life of a child. Children learn to respect God through first learning to respect their parents.
Exodus 20:13 NKJV
“You shall not murder.
We are made in Gods image and we are not to destroy what God has valued and made in His image. Only God has the right to do so, this includes when one takes their own life.
God values human life.
Exodus 20:14 NKJV
“You shall not commit adultery.
What is adultery?
Adultery is when a married person is being intimate the way y only a husband and wife should be physically intimate with someone that they are not married too.
Marriage is an important establishment in human society and is one that was established by God. Marriage is to reflect the relationship between Christ and the Church, and marriage is to Glorify God. Husband and wife cannot function properly if they do not trust each other. When a husband or wife cheats on each other they are also damaging their spouse and their own selves and marriages.
Exodus 20:15 NKJV
“You shall not steal.
Stealing disrespects people and their things. We are to respect others and their possessions. Stealing causes pain to others and damages the order of society.
Exodus 20:16 NKJV
“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
What is bearing false witness against your neighbor?
A false witness is when someone gives a false testimony of something happening or not happening.
Exodus 20:17 NKJV
“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.”
What does it mean to covet something?
to covet something is to desire or crave something.
in this case the items already belong to someone and are theirs. Just like stealing God allows people to own things that are theirs but not others. Coveting peoples things also lead to other sins.
No Gods other than God (Yahweh).
Do not commit Idolatry
Do not use the Lord God’s name in vain.
Observe the Sabbath and keep it Holy.
Honor your Father and Mother.
What do the first 5 commandments have in common?
All of these commands have to do with how we interact with God. They all have to do with Honoring Him and keeping Him in His rightful place in our lives as the most important thing in our lives.
You must not murder.
You must not commit adultery.
You must not steal.
You must not give false testimony.
You must not covet another persons possessions.
What do these 5 commands have in common?
Each of these commands have to do with how Gods people are to interact with other people.
The Ten commandments as a whole were given to mankind so that we could understand how to interact with Him and other people. The 10 commandments also shows us what God is like, His character.
Jesus sums the commandments up like this.
Matthew 22:37–40 NKJV
Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”
How many of you have kept the 10 commandments perfectly all your life?
None of us have.
The law of God also shows us His perfect standard of Holiness and where we are in comparison to that standard.
Romans 3:20 NKJV
Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
So here in Romans we see that the law that was Given shows our sin.
Romans 3:23 NKJV
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
If we cannot live up to this law that God has given to us then what Good is the law?
God gave us this law out of Love, the law shows us that we cannot do it alone and that we are in need of a savior. The law points to Jesus who is the only one who can save us from the wrath of God and free us from being slaves to sin.
The only way to have salvation is through Christ.
Romans 10:9 NKJV
that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
