The Parable

Who’s Authority. Jesus is teaching the people in the temple

The leadership comes to question Jesus on what authority are you cleansing the Temple of the merchants

then Jesus asks by what authority did John the Baptist come and proclaim Me as the Messiah ?

Now Jesus is going to tell a parable. most parables Jesus gives the meaning is hidden. and only those who God gave ears to hear and understand will know the meaning

but this parable everybody knows the meaning

and this parable is going straight to the leadership who is questioning Jesus’ authority

so to put this parable into context lets turn to Isaiah 5

V 1-7

over and over in the Old Testament Israel is referred to as a vineyard

that God is the owner

but the vineyard does not live up to it’s potential

So, back in Luke Jesus has another parable

The owner is The Father

The vine growers is the leadership

the slaves are the prophets

Beloved Son -Jesus

Read Luke 20 9-18

God The Father

God owns the vineyard

He did all the work of preparing it

planting it

then He rented it to people who were to do the work. in the renting deal the the growers were to pay in fruit to the owner

God redeemed the people out of slavery in Egypt.

He opened the Red Sea for them to cross out of danger from Pharaohs army

the Red Sea engulfed the whole army of the Egyptians

God sent food from Heaven

water from a rock

Led them into the promise land at harvest time

drove out the Inhabitants of the land in front of the Israelites

settled them in a land of milk and honey

God gave them simple instructions

worship me, follow My law.

don’t do what the nations are doing that I am driving out of the land

The land is God’s land

this is the place in the whole world that He chose to say this is mine

and the center of this land is Jerusalem

Mt Zion

the place where Jesus will reign from in the millennial kingdom

The land owner sends servants to collect the rent

the produce of the vineyard

the first one sent they whipped him and sent away

then a second and a third

but they were treated shamefully and sent away

why does the owner/ The Father keep sending servants to these men when they deserve to be beaten and thrown out

Because of mercy because of grace and love

each and everyone of us deserve the lake of fire a tormented torturous existence forever is a place of darkness.

aren't you glad that God kept sending you invitations to become His child

aren’t you grateful for the Holy Spirit who regenerated you so you would not be like these men who refuse to pay their rent?

The father is now going to send His beloved son to collect the rent

He wants these men to do right by Him

these men know that this is the son!!

these men know that Jesus is the Messiah

but their wickedness will not allow them to bow to the King

so they have to kill Him

The Father wants these men to respect the Son, to have a good relationship with the family

but they reasoned that if the son, the heir were to be killed then 9/10 of the law is possession

Jesus is telling these men what their plans are

These men know now that Jesus knows

the Father over and over wanted to bless Israel and sent prophets to plead for them to come back to God but they refused

John Macauthur said this

 Why didn’t they believe?  Listen to John 12:42. “Nevertheless many even of the rulers believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they were not confessing Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; for they loved the approval of men rather than the approval of God.” It never was a question of evidences.  Never.  They even say, “We know that You speak the true words of God.”  They never argued about His miracles.  They never denied one miracle.  It just was not acceptable to them to believe in Him because they loved their own religion and the praise that it brought them more than they loved God.  It was not a head issue, it was a heart issue.  He is the Messiah.  He is the only and beloved Son of God.

This is the depth of depravity of the human race.

it’s not that the human race does not recognize God as the creator, and judge

but that thy love their sin more

if Jesus would come to earth right now the same would happen

in fact it will happen just that way

Revelation 16:14 LSB

for they are spirits of demons, doing signs, which go out to the kings of the whole world, to gather them together for the war of the great day of God, the Almighty.

Revelation 16:16 LSB

And they gathered them together to the place which in Hebrew is called Har-Magedon.

all of the armies of the world are going to fight against Jesus to kill Him

these men and women know exactly who Jesus is when this happens

Revelation 19:11–16 LSB

Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sits on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war. His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems; having a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself, and being clothed with a garment dipped in blood, His name is also called The Word of God. And the armies which are in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, were following Him on white horses. And from His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the wrath of the rage of God, the Almighty. And He has on His garment and on His thigh a name written, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”

lets get back to the parable

Now They are planning on killing the son. what will the Father do?

V 15 -16

May it never be!!!

these people know what this parable is saying

these people because they are God’s chosen always assume that they will never be thrown out of the land

BUT the Israelites will be expelled from the land

no more mercy, no more grace to these wicked people

and this is exactly what happened in Ad 70

The Stone

V 17

Jesus is the stone

The Jewish leadership rejected this stone

there is a story that the cap stone of the temple was sent up from the quarry to be set aside until needed

but they builders did not see it as the capstone and threw it over the bank

and when the temple was all finished except for the cap stone they called to the quarry to have it sent up.

but the quarry said it went up to you a long time ago

so the workers ad to retrieve it from over the side of the cliff

Jesus is this stone that people are rejecting and throwing Him over the cliff

Jesus has a saying about this stone

V 18

whoever falls onto the Savior will have a broken heart over their sin

will have a broken spirit over who they are spiritually

will have the chains of sin and death broken from us

but whoever has the stone of judgement fall on will be destroyed

Jesus in this parable is warning of Judgement

is telling them I know what you are planning

fall on the mercy of the savior

fall on the love that is being offered

don’t have the stone of judgement fall on you
