This morning we gather to celebrate the national day of prayer which was last Thursday
However Prayer is still that important
Prayer is the breath of faith. Prayer meetings are the lungs of the church.
Charles Spurgeon
So this morning we will do somethings a bit different before we get into the different stuff
a national call to prayer was issued 1775 by our founding fathers
Because prayer is that important
in 1863 President Lincoln signed a proclamation day for humiliation, fasting and prayer
Almost 100 years later in 1952 a joint resolution was signed by congress and sent to President Truman who made an annual national day of prayer
In 1988 President Reagan made National Day of prayer the first Thursday of May each year
And thus we have celebrated it each year
I would challenge you that National Day of Prayer in 2026 which would be the 75th anniversary is on May 7th to put that in your calendar so it is an event you can be a part of
So we held a special service on Thursday and what a joy that was to join together and pray
Pray is one of those things for us in America that we take for granted
Prayer is sort like Bible reading I think
We have it readily available and yet we take it so much for grated that we don’t do it
And church prayer is one of those actions you can be doing in your private time to be putting action to your faith
Church gathering to pray is something you can do to put action to your faith
As believers we are to be like Christ to do what He did church Jesus prayed
Jesus is always going off to pray
Matthew 14:23 NASB95
23 After He had sent the crowds away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray; and when it was evening, He was there alone.
This is just one of those instances
That Jesus after a ministry event
Or often we find Jesus going out early in the morning to spend time with prayer
If Jesus does it and He is the created of everything
Don’t you think just maybe that we ought to be doing it also
Don’t you think that prayer is that important to our relationship with God
If prayer at it’s simplest form communication with God
Then as Gods children we ought to be communicating with God
So for National Day of Prayer 2025 the verse was
Romans 15:13 NASB95
13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
What a great reminder to the church in Rome
What a great reminder to the church for today
that Hope is only found in the Lord Himself
that Joy and peace come through believing in the God of the universe
That the Hope only comes through the power of the living God and church today that is found in the Power of the Holy Spirit at work in, through, and around us
Our only comes through the work of God which is done by the power of the Holy Spirit
And church it is through prayer that we get the opportunity to invite the Holy Spirit to do a work in and through us
This is Paul calling on God fill you and I the believer with hope
As we said earlier that hope is the joy and peace that comes from knowing personally the Lord Jesus Christ
Church what power that hope that fill us it
Charles Spurgeon said, “True Prayer is neither a mere mental exercise, nor a vocal performance. It’s far deeper than that. It is a spiritual transaction with the creator of heaven and earth.”
That Prayer is more than just saying some words
That prayer is more than just submitting our to do list or laundry list or our want list
Prayer is a spiritual transaction
Prayer is when we are filled with the Hope that Paul talks about
Prayer is when we have such a peace that only comes from the Lord that this world cannot understand nor will it ever
Church I think this is where the rubber meets the road when the idea and theory of prayer come and the action of prayer meet
See we talk about prayer and how easy and simple it is
And then we often question well how I am supposed to prayer
Also a short time ago we had Pastor Cecil Washington come and talk about prayer
It was so amazing and very very simple
It was nothing we had not heard
Church prayer is nothing you have not heard about and yet church it is some of the most if not the most powerful thing we can do as a believer
To go before the throne of the living God and submit our request and our needs and our questions is something so amazing
So church how do we put theory of a spiritual transaction to action
I am so glad you asked
ACTS
See it was nothing knew and very simple in how you and I can put action to the call to prayer in our individual lives and in the life of the church
ACTS is an acronym
ADORATION
Isaiah 25:1 NASB95
1 O Lord, You are my God; I will exalt You, I will give thanks to Your name; For You have worked wonders, Plans formed long ago, with perfect faithfulness.
Church in the first part of praying before we get into the giving of our list to GOd
We are to spend time adoring God
We are to spend time praise God
To think of the many many many ways or things to pray God about
We are to exalt God which is to speak highly of them
Church we are to praise the Lord because He is worthy
Psalm 118:28 NASB95
28 You are my God, and I give thanks to You; You are my God, I extol You.
To praise God for His character
To praise God because He is Good
To praise God because of who He is not so much for what He has done that will come later
But to spend sometime speaking highly of Him to Him
Pastor Washington said when we start with adoration we start by looking up to God
That puts us in right relationship to God
We start prayer off on the right step!
So church we are going to do somethings a bit different
We are going to break up into groups and spend time in small groups adoring and exalting God this morning
ADORATION - Praising God for Who He is
As we gather back for the next part of ACTS some of you have heard this before and some of you this may be new
There is nothing super duper special or hoy except that it is a good reminder of how you and I are to pray
And if it helps us put action to our faith this morning then it is awesome
The next part of ACTS is
Confession
This is probably the part no one likes
You mean I need to spend time confessing my sins to God
Yes
But He knows everything doesn’t He
yes He does but you still need to humble yourself to bring your failures and sins before God and ask for forgiveness and make a profession to repent from them
1 John 1:9 NASB95
9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Church we are to confess our sins
This doesn’t need to be a public confession where each week you get up and confess your sin
Rather during our private prayer time we are to confess our sins to God
When we do that church God is faithful to forgive us
This morning like we did with adoration we will ask you to gather into a small group and probably the same small group
And spend time confessing your sin
Some of you may feel uncomfortable with that and thats ok but I would challenge you press into that
The first step towards a right relationship with God is to confess our sins
YOu have heard the first step to getting better is to admit you have a problem
Same is true for your walk with Christ is to confess your sins to Him
CONFESSION - to admit your wrong doing
Now after we have Adored God and Confessed to God our sin
We move to the Thanking God for what He has done
Church can we just agree this morning that we have so very very very much to be thanking God for
Psalm 107:1 NASB95
1 Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
Church during our prayer time we are to give thanks to God
Because He is very very good
We are to give thanks to God because He is worthy
We are to give thanks because of what all God has done
Some of those big things God has done is creation, life, salvation
Some of those big things church are safety, life, healing, restoration
Psalm 136:1 NASB95
1 Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
So we gather together to give thanks for what God has done
Thanks - give thanks to God for what He has done in your life
Then church we come to what we are probably the best at
The supplication parts of ACTS
To ask, beg, request for something
Church to take our requests or the requests of others to the throne room of God
John 14:13–14 NASB95
13 “Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 “If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.
Church this doesn’t mean we get to give our want list to God and then we get whatever we want
See the thing about prayer is not about changing God to bend to our will but to change our heart to bend to Gods will
That when we are changed from the inside out we are then asking things in Gods will and then He will give us those
The other part of asking church is that sometimes God answer is No or not right now
Church we are to still submit our requests to the Lord
Psalm 119:170 NASB95
170 Let my supplication come before You; Deliver me according to Your word.
To take our requests to the Lord to ask God to move in our lives or in situations in our lives
Then church to lift up other people
To pray God would heal or give or move in other peoples lives is such a great privilege
Supplication - to ask, to request on our own behalf and the behalf of others to God
Church as we have taken action this morning of putting our faith to action in prayer this morning
This is what we are called to do
We are called to cry out to the Lord God in prayer
We are to seek the Lord through prayer
This morning we have taken the theory or idea of prayer and put action to it as a church
1 Thessalonians 5:17 NASB95
17 pray without ceasing;
As we come to our time of invitation this morning
It is another chance for you to respond to God this morning
Maybe you have questions about salvation and what Jesus did for you
There will be people up front to help you answer those questions
Or maybe you need to make a decision to join the church
Or maybe you just want to spend time in prayer with God this morning
The altar is open
