So, as we begin to wrap this up,
what are we to do with this passage?
Let us remember who we once were,
a sinner saved by grace.
And more importantly, let us remember what Christ has done for us.
While we were standing in the dock,
waiting for the verdict
waiting for the ‘law of good works’ to condemn us,
Jesus stood up.
He stood up and came over to us and said,
“Sit down.”
Then He entered the dock in our place,
and turned to the judge and says,
“The punishment they were about to receive,
put it on me,
I will pay it.”
But you hear a cry from the Stands,
“But the punishment is death!”
“Yes,”
says Jesus,
“I will pay it in full.”
Christ took our sins upon Himself.
He paid them in full.
Our past, present and future sins.
He died in our place, taking our punishment on Himself.
But death could not hold Him!
Three days later, He rose from the dead,
having defeated death itself.
Now when the ‘law of good works’ looks at us
it sees only Jesus.
Our sin placed on Him,
His righteousness imputed to us.
And when we are tempted to smuggle good works into His work of grace
let us remember His death.
The gospel isn’t just something we start with but then quickly move on from.

No, the gospel is something that stays with us each and every day.
The gospel continues to save us.
Continues to point us to God.
Continues to remind us of all He has done.
We are saved by grace alone,
through faith alone,
in Christ alone.
Let us close in prayer together.
