On Mission for the LORD
Story of youth trying to turn other away from the bible teaching.
6 When they had traveled the whole island as far as Paphos, they came across a sorcerer, a Jewish false prophet named Bar-Jesus. 7 He was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man. This man summoned Barnabas and Saul and wanted to hear the word of God.
Paphos “pay-fus”
Paphos was a very sinful place (Las Vegas)
“A Jewish false prophet named Bar-Jesus”
13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who go through it. 14 How narrow is the gate and difficult the road that leads to life, and few find it.
15 “Be on your guard against false prophets who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravaging wolves. 16 You’ll recognize them by their fruit. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes or figs from thistles? 17 In the same way, every good tree produces good fruit, but a bad tree produces bad fruit. 18 A good tree can’t produce bad fruit; neither can a bad tree produce good fruit. 19 Every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 So you’ll recognize them by their fruit.
Walking the path of Jesus is not easy it is a narrow path.
“Be on your guard”
They blend in with everyone else.
“recognize them by their fruit”
What fruit is Jesus speaking of?
If someone is not producing good fruit they don’t know Jesus.
So be a fruit inspector.
It doesn’t have to be a field of watermelons it can be a single grape but there has to be good fruit of some kind.
“So you’ll recognize them by their fruit”.
7 He was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man. This man summoned Barnabas and Saul and wanted to hear the word of God.
This false Prophet is with the proconsul.
False Prophet are always seeking leadership.
Sergius Paulus desired to hear GOD’s word
8 But Elymas the sorcerer (that is the meaning of his name) opposed them and tried to turn the proconsul away from the faith.
What is this Bar-Jesus person trying to do?
He is trying to turn the proconsul away from the faith.
This is something that causes righteous anger.
Pastor story about an on fire convert and the family visit.
9 But Saul—also called Paul—filled with the Holy Spirit, stared straight at Elymas 10 and said, “You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery, you son of the devil and enemy of all that is right. Won’t you ever stop perverting the straight paths of the Lord?
finally we see the name Paul
What happens to Paul “filled with the Holy Spirit”
STARED STRAIGHT AT Elymas! Paul wasn’t shy in this moment.
What did Paul say?
Will your truth is different than my truth. NO!!!
Bar-Jesus means Son of Jesus but Paul say you are no son of Jesus your a son of the devil.
Everything you say and do is wrong your an enemy of all that is right.
Stop getting in the way of the LORD’s work.
11 Now, look, the Lord’s hand is against you. You are going to be blind, and will not see the sun for a time.” Immediately a mist and darkness fell on him, and he went around seeking someone to lead him by the hand.
“The LORD’s hand is against you”
This is a scary place to be.
“You are going to be blind” (WHY?)
It happen immediately.
12 Then, when he saw what happened, the proconsul believed, because he was astonished at the teaching of the Lord.
Now you see why Paul was so angry with this man because the proconsul was so close to believing and he was trying to stop it.
God won in this match and we know HE wins in the end.
“astonished at the teaching of the LORD”
Don’t be afraid to stand up for the LORD.
Don’t get in the way of HIS work.
Paul battled for this man’s soul do you need someone to battle for you soul today?
