The coalitions that formed

Deuteronomy 7:1–2 ““When the Lord your God brings you into the land that you are entering to take possession of it, and clears away many nations before you, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations more numerous and mightier than you, and when the Lord your God gives them over to you, and you defeat them, then you must devote them to complete destruction. You shall make no covenant with them and show no mercy to them.”

Migration: Some suggest they may have already migrated to North Africa prior to the Israelites entering the land. 

Inclusion under Canaanites: Others propose that the Girgashites were included within the broader term "Canaanites," according to תורת הר עציון. 

Rabbinic tradition: Rabbinic tradition suggests that Joshua sent letters to the Canaanites, including the Girgashites, informing them that they could safely flee before the Israelites' arrival.

Honoring the Treaty

2 Samuel 21:1–6 “Now there was a famine in the days of David for three years, year after year. And David sought the face of the Lord. And the Lord said, “There is bloodguilt on Saul and on his house, because he put the Gibeonites to death.” So the king called the Gibeonites and spoke to them. Now the Gibeonites were not of the people of Israel but of the remnant of the Amorites. Proverbs 12:19 “Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment.”

Numbers 32:23 “But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the Lord, and be sure your sin will find you out.”

A curse turned into a blessing

2 Chronicles 1:3 “And Solomon, and all the assembly with him, went to the high place that was at Gibeon, for the tent of meeting of God, which Moses the servant of the Lord had made in the wilderness, was there.”
