When you think of something that is “Supreme” what do you think of? My first thought is to that brand that has the red background and the word “supreme” on it. There are many things that we consider supreme. Because Supreme is just a fancy word for being the greatest. So when we say that a certain person is the greatest basketball player of all time or the greatest artist of all time, we are saying those people are supreme in their areas. Or in the United States we have a supreme court which means they are the greatest court that gets a lot of high end cases brought to them. Today we are going to look at how Jesus is supreme. But He is not just supreme in one area. He is supreme over everything.
Colossians 1:15–17 “The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
Jesus is the image of God. That means that Jesus is the way that we see God. Now when we think of an image we think we aren’t looking at the real thing. I can show you an image of the Grand Canyon which will show you what it looks like but you are not seeing the Grand Canyon, just a picture. But Jesus is not just the image of God but He is God. “For in Him all things were created.” Everything in this world is created by Jesus. Yet it is also created for Him. That means that everything in this world is created to give glory to God. We have ruined that. We have twisted the things of this world so that they glorify us instead of God. Think about relationships, we try to manipulate people so they do things for us instead of treating them with respect. Sin has led to where we take these wonderful things that Jesus has created and we use those to glorify ourselves instead of using them to glorify Him. Jesus is the creator of all, He is the one that we are made to give glory to.
Colossians 1:18–20 “And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.”
While Jesus is the creator and is God. He also is the one who has allowed for things to be reconciled back to Him. It was not just us. We also look at Jesus death on the cross as how He provided a way for us to be able to be with God once more. His death does not stop there, it also provides a way that all of creation will go back to it’s original state. Let’s just think for a moment about a world without sin. What are some things that you think of? No natural disasters. No sickness and diseases. No fear of the world dying. And no death. Think of how peaceful and wonderful a world without sin would be like. Because of Jesus’ death and resurrection He has provided a way that not only we can be saved by but also creation will be saved as well. The death and resurrection of Jesus is what shows the nature of God’s heart, willing to sacrifice Himself for our sake.
Colossians 1:21–23 “Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation—if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.”
Paul gives us here the exact thing that the Gospel is. We were enemies of God because of our sin. Yet Jesus died a death in our place so that we can be seen as holy in the eyes of God. We just need to continue in our faith for Him. That is what Paul says the Gospel is. Each one of us sucks. It happens in different ways but none of us our good. No matter how hard we try, or what our grandma says about us. We are not good. We are on a path straight to death. A path completely apart from God. Yet He provides a way. The creator of the world loves us so much that He came down to live among us. Jesus the supreme being of everything, came down to live among us and die for us. The death that we should have died and then He rose again three days later to provide a way for us. That’s love. That is true love that no person on earth can ever love you with. Only God loves you that much. So why run from Him? Why seek after the things of this world that do not love you? The things that always fail, the things that are corrupted by sin, the things that do not last. Why not go to the one who loves you? It is not easy. It is not easy to stay strong in your faith. The world pulls you away from it.
Think of it this way. Which house would you like to live in. There is one that you can do whatever you want whenever you want. You know best so you do whatever you feel like. That sounds like a fun place to be but there is a catch. You will eventually get yourself killed while you live there. Or you can go live in this other house. It is a bit harder. You have a Father that gives you some instruction that may not seem like it is whats best. But the catch here is that, the Father giving you instruction is the one that created you and designed you. He knows you better than you know yourself and out of His love He is guiding you on the path to lead you to your full purpose. To glorify God.
Any bad thought or bad thing that has happened in your life is not because of God. It is because of sin. Now even when we are with Jesus and we are faithfully following Him. Bad things will still happen because sin is still in this world. But Jesus is greater than that. Jesus has given us a way to not be guilty of our sin. He is also going to return one day and get rid of sin once and for all. We’ll be able to live in that perfect world with Him. We have a chance to respond to that message today, no matter where you are at. No matter how terrible of a sinner you may thing you are. God has provided a way for you, so that you can live with Him for eternity, let’s pray.
