Session 1 Deb Snell

(The Leader and Criticism)

“You can’t outwork out a bad diet.”
Great leadership is not determined by your capability (able to do) but your capacity (how much you are able to handle).
Success often breeds frustration, waiting, difficult people, failure/disappointment, and criticism, rather that simply the affirmation you feel should come. Success needs thick skin. Capacity is developed through the experience of difficulty.
How good are you at being uncomfortable?
Truth: we used to lead teams who served, now we lead those who spectate and criticize.
criticism is our supplement for action.
Criticisms is the early sound progress makes.
stages of progress
violently opposed
reluctant acceptance
embraced as though it was self-evident all along
Change is naturally disruptive
“Progress never goes on sale and it never comes with a discount” -Bishop TD Jakes
Standing with God is going to put you odds with people.
Being liked is a fleeting thing.
The problem with being liked is that THEY will always move the goalpost.
you cannot allow appreciation to be your monetary currency, because you will be bankrupt real fast.
“The only way to avoid criticism is to do nothing, ay nothing, and be nothing.” -John Maxwell
You are not divisive, you are just decisive—-which sets you up for criticism.
Pray for impact, not just simply visibility.
Leadership truth: Excellent leaders reach a point when they are only talked about when things go wrong.
There is hardly a time where everyone is against you
critics are experts at making themselves looking bigger than they are.
“You cannot allow a church to be chained to someone’s ego.”
Are you going to be a finesse leader or collision leader?
leaders are called to be confrontational not combative.
Great leaders will have to fight the bully.
the bully is the guardian of the status quo, or the firewall for business as usual.
God’s blessing was not in Potiphar’s house, it was in the leader Joseph, so God’s blessing shifted from the house to prison.
Dilute the influence of a bully—through integrity, and baptisms.
Session two: Leaders have Different personalities but leaders always have _______
Platinum leaders know how to follow.
Good leadership requires an understanding of the world followers live in.
Platinum leaders self-discipline
Snell “I ask more of myself than anyone else asks of me. My standard is internal.”
discipline is doing what you should do, no matter how you feel about it.
Focus areas of discipline: The tongue, temper, ego, sexual desire/portals, time, appetite.
Platinum Leaders are patient.
nothing good happens over night.
Leadership fallacy: “I should be further along by now.”
However long it takes you to get it as the leader it will take the team 5x longer to get it and as soon as they get it, they will forget it.
Being one step ahead makes you a leader, Being 50 steps ahead makes you a martyr.
Platinum leaders embrace friendship and accountability.
Leadership is isolating.
great leaders seek out mentors.
Managing defining moments
defining moments a perception shifting moment or circumstances that permanently defines the leader for the good or bad.
good defining moment: when team buys in, and gives consent for you to lead them. less questions and grant you the benefit of the doubt.
bad defining moment: the leaders behavior permanently poisons the well of their leadership. They will no longer be able to lead in that context, or they will operate with a lid no matter how great the effort, energy, or prayerfulness.
when your leadership dies, before you bury it, you need to do an autopsy. discover why it died so it doesn't happen again.
I cant control what is squeezing but i can control what comes out of me.
defining moments can be course shifters. Striking when the iron is hot.
Session 3 The Wet church, creating a culture of baptism/discipleship.
Big idea: Evangelism is not about talent, but desire.
Pastors need to see baptisms
Every farmer needs to see fruit and even the most patient fisherman needs to catch something.
If a fisherman never catches fish, he needs to examine the bait. If a farmer has no fruit he has to evaluate his seed or the soil he/she is sewing into.
Does your church look more like your community or more like the church manual?
Do you see change as threatening?
Have you developed a discipleship type? (Education, young adult, suburbs etc.)
Baptism and discipleship makes the work worth it.
Baptisms minimize a pastors self-doubt about calling.
Baptism is the outward sing of God’s nearness.
You cant transform the church culture through transfers. You only transform culture through baptism.
Creating a baptism culture is a cumulative work. (Greeting, lobby, sabbath school, etc.)
As the pastor: define the baptism formula. TEACH (Matt 28:19)
initial teaching awakening them to faith
baptism
teach to observe all things (post-baptism teaching and discipleship.)
The church should be easy to join and hard to leave not hard to join and easy to leave.
Baptism should be treated as enrollment, not graduation.
Baptism must be celebrated. (Luke 15:7)
Luke 15:7 ESV
Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.
Whatever we celebrate is what we recruit.
Stop celebrating tenure over soul-winning!!!!! Matt:6:21
Matthew 6:21 ESV
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
10% of your budget should go toward evangelism.
Plan for retention.
Connection Points: atleast 2 places baptism person is connected to the church through.
New member class
assign mentors or spiritual parents
increasing fellowship activities
increasing overall fellowship
help them identify their gifts asap.
group discussion: Do you feel like your church celebrates new growth?
what are things that have been helpful to have people settle into the new truth?
Session 4 Worship Management
Preparation: everyone has a job to do.
Worship manager: “clear the runway”
Successful worship service— worship manager implements the plan for the service.
4 pillars of successful worship team:
what is my job?
do i understand my job?
did i complete my job?
did i stay in my lane?
Tuesday Session 1
Generating Buy-In: Shifting the Culture
Purpose: clarify challenges we face
learn basic leadership principle
highlight paradigm shifts,
DNA DETERMINES WHAT ANY LIVING BEING PRODUCES
Our challenge: the adventist pastor is like a step-parent. working those who have a different DNA.
Your church’s values are seen in what they celebrate and what it grieves.
Churches celebrate nostalgia more than present victories
churches grieve culture shifts, (music, jewelry, paying volunteers)
Surface change deals with formatting. Culture change deals with the heart.
culture change begins when you resist the feeling of helplessness
Isaiah 50:7 ESV
But the Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame.
The leader’s will to change the culture must be greater than the will of hte culture to remain the same.
Lead by faith, NOT AFFIRMATION
When the works of the ambassadors of Christ are wrought in God, they will not be elated by praise from human lips; neither will they be depressed because they think they are not appreciated. Their work is to learn what is the mind of God, that they may show themselves approved unto God. -RH September 4, 1888 Par. 3
Adventist Leadership is not restricted, but it is expensive.
Big Idea: You have to establish the values.
4 levels of buy-in
Level 4
The buy-in is tepid at best. People give mental assent to the vision. If you aske them what the vision of the church was they would not know.
Level 3
They agree with it in theory but there is no corresponding action. They will help facilitate the vision when it is convenient or when it boosts their ideas or status. They will not, however, make personal sacrifices for the vision.
Level 2
The leader's vision resonates with them in a more personal way. They help facilitate the vision with consistency. They will give limited resources to assist in facilitating the vision.
They still see their participation as optional.
Level 1
• People's hearts are knit together with the leaders. They see the vision in a very literal way.
They sacrifice personal time and put limitless personal resources into helping bring the leaders vision to reality. They communicate the vision as if it were their own. They are personally disappointed if the vision is hindered.
Revelation: The only way to remain at 50% threshhold is to baptize with consistency is baptize new souls.
Hold team accountable to the vision
change the culture
raise the spiritual climate.
your climate determines what lives and dies.
Session 2: Raising your Leadership Lid.
When you don’t like what you see in the mirror, don’t blame the mirror.
The Principle of the Lid
The lower an individual's ability to lead, the lower the lid on his potential. The higher the individual's ability to lead, the higher the lid on his potential. To give you an example, if your leadership rates an 8, then your effectiveness can never be greater than a 7. If your leadership is only a 4, then your effectiveness will be no higher than a 3. Your leadership ability-for better or for worse— always determines your effectiveness and the potential impact of your organization. John Maxwell
Maxwell’s two options
work harder (not preferred). This doesn’t mean to not work hard, it means work hard in investing in other leaders to avoid burnout, and foster a spirit of discipleship
Work harder to increase the effectiveness of your leadership
Before people buy into the program or vision they must first buy into the character of the leader. -J. Maxwell
-”The only thing worse than the blind leading the blind, is the blind leading the seeing.”
Leaders capacity is not demonstrated in harmony, a leaders capacity is demonstrated in tension.
If we can only lead people we get a long with, the ministry becomes a clique.
You are always going to struggle to lead people who have more zeal for the work than you do.
You can’t lead when the standard you set is based upon minimums.
Attitude/perspective: They said, "The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size... We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them." Numbers 13:33
An army of sheep led by a lion will defeat an army of lions led by a sheep. -Alexander the Great.
