“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes…”

Big Idea: We are called to be bold in our faith, even when it’s unpopular.

I. The Gospel Is Worth Declaring Loudly (Romans 1:16a)

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel…” — Romans 1:16a (ESV)

A. The Gospel Isn’t a Whisper – It’s a Roar

Paul isn’t whispering in the corner; he’s shouting from the rooftops. In a culture where speaking truth gets you canceled, Paul chooses courage over comfort.

Acts 4:20 – “for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.” — When Peter and John were told to shut up about Jesus, their response was: we can’t not speak.

2 Timothy 1:8 – “Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord… but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God.” — Timothy’s call is our call: don’t be ashamed, even if it costs you.

Mark 8:38 – “For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words… of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed…” — Jesus makes it clear: silence now has eternal consequences later.

Matthew 10:27 – “What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops.” — If Jesus gave you the truth in private, it’s meant to be declared in public.

Psalm 40:9-10 – “I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation… I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation.” — The psalmist models gospel boldness long before Paul ever penned Romans.

II. The Gospel Is the Power of God (Romans 1:16b)

“…for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes…” — Romans 1:16b (ESV)

A. This Isn’t Opinion—It’s Omnipotence

Paul doesn’t say the gospel contains the power of God; he says it is the power of God. Not advice. Not opinion. Not mere inspiration. It is the very dynamite (“dunamis”) of God that blows up sin, shame, and death.

1 Corinthians 1:18 – “For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” — The world calls it foolish; heaven calls it powerful.

2 Corinthians 4:7 – “But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.” — We are weak, but the gospel we carry is unstoppable.

1 Thessalonians 1:5 – “Because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction.” — The gospel lands with power, not just persuasion.

Ephesians 1:19-20 – “…the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe… that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead…” — The same power that raised Jesus now raises the spiritually dead.

Romans 8:11 – “If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he… will also give life to your mortal bodies.” — The gospel gives not just future hope but resurrection power right now.

Isaiah 55:11 – “So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty…” — God’s Word never falls flat. The gospel always does something.

III. The Gospel Is for Everyone Who Believes (Romans 1:16c)

“…to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.” — Romans 1:16c (ESV)

A. One Voice Can Reach Every Nation

The gospel doesn’t play favorites. It doesn’t discriminate by race, age, status, or background. It’s for everyone who believes—the religious insider and the pagan outsider, the addict and the athlete, the CEO and the single mom.

John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” — The gospel invitation is as wide as the world and as personal as whoever.

Romans 10:12-13 – “For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For ‘everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’” — One gospel, one Savior, one promise—for all.

1 Timothy 2:3-4 – “This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” — God’s heart beats for the nations.

Galatians 3:28 – “There is neither Jew nor Greek… for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” — The cross obliterates dividing lines.

Isaiah 49:6 – “…I will make you as a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.” — The gospel was never meant to stay in one zip code.

Revelation 7:9 – “…a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne…” — The endgame of the gospel is global worship of King Jesus.
