God is sovereign and nothing comes as a surprise to Him. Whether we face fluctuating economics, threats from abroad, unrest at home, or other troubling circumstances, our Heavenly Father is not caught unaware. Through prayer, we are able to tap into His wisdom, strength, protection, and peace. He stands ready to respond to our needs when we humbly ask for divine intervention in the affairs of men.
As we Pray for America whose pledge of allegiance recounts that we are “one nation under God,” and whose currency states that it is “in God we trust,” we want Americans to encounter the God who rules over their country. “He who forms the mountains, creates the wind, and reveals His thoughts to man, He who turns dawn to darkness, and treads the high places of the earth—the LORD God Almighty is His name.”
—Amos 4:13 NIV
Government functions to provide a framework for an organized society, while our devotion and compass for what is true and good are rooted in the unchanging truths of God laid out in Scripture.
WHY to pray
WHY to pray
In the days Jesus spent on earth, there was tension within the local Jewish leaders concerning the overlying occupation by the Roman government. History records several uprisings and rebellions against the Romans during the same time period, however, Jesus’ teachings primarily revolved around the Kingdom of God. The book of Mark records the now famous words that Jesus uttered “Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s, render unto God what is God’s” to show that government has a use, but it is not our savior and cannot compete with our allegiance to Christ Jesus.
In our country, our government has many different sectors that perform many different tasks. Local government influences the buildings and schools that populate communities State government influences the operation of businesses and the roadways to get to them. Federal government influences the relationships with other nations for international commerce and military aide for our allies.
The ‘forest’ of government is full of ‘trees’ that are the individually elected and appointed officials who are tasked with representing the interests of their constituents and seeking wise counsel to make decisions to lead our country forward. The sphere of government leaders need our prayers!
HOW to pray
HOW to pray
Pray the Father’s heart. To do this, seek scripture for the places God reveals how we should interact and participate in government. Meditating on scripture before beginning prayer puts our hearts into a position of submission to the will of God. These verses are good starting places to see God’s purpose for Government:
Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor. - 1 Peter 2:16-17 ESV
First of all, then, I urge that requests, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made on behalf of all people, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. – 1 Timothy 2:1-2 NASB
When a land is in rebellion, it has many rulers, but with a discerning and knowledgeable person, it endures. – Proverbs 28:2 HCSB
WHAT to pray
WHAT to pray
Provide leaders with wise and godly counselors who will provide honest wisdom and encouragement
Well up humility in the hearts of leaders to make apologies or adjustments when these things are necessary
Lord, pour out a spirit of cooperation between elected leaders
Break down the barriers that are built up by selfish ambition for personal power
Safeguard the marriages and families of elected leaders who spend large portions of time away from home
God, give leaders clarity to know what issues are most important to dedicate their time toward
Soften the hearts of leaders to hear and understand the needs of the communities they serve
Bring a spirit of harmony and righteousness among the staff members who work to support each elected leader
Protect leaders from falling into temptations of bribes, unfaithfulness or straying from what they know is right. Lord, protect them from the plots of evil to stand for what You have established.

We lift up the Vice President, cabinet, and advisors to the President. The Bible and history are full of examples of counsel to the king resulting in laws and decisions leading the entire nation toward peace and prosperity or toward division, destruction, and even collapse.
We pray that You would give the President wisdom to surround himself with counselors who have our country’s best interest at heart. Grant them wisdom to advise the President in the course of action he should take. We pray that You would surround our President with sound, wise counsel to direct him as he leads our nation.

“He appointed judges in the land, in each of the fortified cities of Judah. He told them, ‘Consider carefully what you do, because you are not judging for mere mortals but for the LORD, who is with you whenever you give a verdict. Now let the fear of the LORD be on you. Judge carefully, for with the LORD our God there is no injustice or partiality or bribery.’”

Prayer
Prayer
Heavenly Father, Creator of the heavens and earth, we are confident that You sovereignly place every leader and that You have marked the days for which You use them for Your purposes. By Your mighty hand we pray that You would be merciful to our nation to work in the hearts of those to whom You give authority. We pray for peace. We pray for unity. But whether in conflict or unity, we are confident that You are implementing Your plan and accomplishing Your will.
Romans 13:1-2
Romans 13:1-2
“Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.”
Prayer
Prayer
King of Kings, you appoint the nation’s leaders in Congress and at the state and local levels. We pray for our leaders to protect our freedom so that we might live out our faith freely without fear.
We pray for the salvation of all of our nation’s leaders that they may know You. Place people in power who revere You and will serve You for the good of their communities.
Our Hope
Our Hope
Psalm 33:14-22
Psalm 33:14-22
“From His dwelling place He watches all who live on earth — He who forms the hearts of all, who considers everything they do. No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes by his great strength. A horse is a vain hope for deliverance; despite all its great strength it cannot save. But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear Him, on those whose hope is in His unfailing love, to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine. We wait in hope for the LORD; He is our help and our shield. In Him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in His holy name. May your unfailing love be with us, LORD, even as we put our hope in You.”
Psalm 22:27-28
Psalm 22:27-28
“All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations will bow down before Him, for dominion belongs to the LORD and He rules over the nations.”
Prayer
Prayer
Lord Jesus, though our hearts are heavy for our nation, may we not lose sight of the fact that our hope is in You. One day, every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that You are Lord (Romans 14:11; Philippians 2:10-11). You are our only hope.
Forgive us for placing our hope in the government, political ideologies, comfort, financial security and other circumstances. We repent that, in our prosperity, we have forgotten You and have become self-reliant (Deuteronomy 8:11-14). Our hearts are so quick to wander. We repent of idolatry.
By Υour power, teach us to live with the realization in the forefront of our minds that our citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20). We commit our future as a nation and as Υour people to Your Hands. Your will be done. Amen.
