1. Opening Discussion

Question: What does it mean to be a “multiplier” for Jesus?
Encourage participants to define it in their own words—multiplying love, disciples, truth, peace, etc.

2. Scripture Reading & Context

Read Romans 16:17–18
Romans 16:17–18 KJV 1900
Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.
Context: Paul is concluding his letter with personal greetings and a strong warning against those who threaten the unity of the church through false teachings and self-serving agendas.

3. Verse Breakdown

Verse 17
“Watch out for those who cause divisions…”
→ Be alert. Unity is not automatic—it must be guarded.
“…create obstacles contrary to the doctrine…”
→ Not all obstacles are persecution; some are false teachings or personal preferences that deviate from sound doctrine.
“Avoid them.”
→ There’s a time for confrontation, and there’s a time to disengage.
Verse 18
“They do not serve our Lord Christ…”
→ Their service appears spiritual but is self-serving.
“Smooth talk and flattery…”
→ Tactics of deception; not everyone who speaks well speaks truth.
“…deceive the hearts of the naive.”
→ Emphasizes the need for spiritual maturity and discernment.

4. Application: Be a Multiplier

What Does It Mean to Be a Multiplier for Jesus?
Multiply disciples (Matthew 28:19)

Multiply encouragement and unity (Ephesians 4:1–6)
How Do Dividers Act?
Spread gossip or half-truths
Prioritize personal preferences over doctrine
Stir controversy instead of fostering peace
Adding works to Grace
