Intro

Last week:
We looked at the call to holiness...
The text we used:
1 Peter 1:16 KJV 1900
16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
We saw how we serve a holy God and how holiness is important to God...
God told Israel to be a holy people and to keep their camp holy...
We serve the Holy Father, we use the Holy Bible, we have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit...
Holiness: sacred; blameless (nothing sticks); consecrated; sanctified
<<<We spoke about “How to be holy”

1. Gird up the loins of your mind

Holiness begins in the thought life...
If I don’t focus my thought life on correct thinking, than I’m going to lose the battle to sin and not be holy as I’m called to be...

2. Be sober

3. Don’t live like you used to

1 Peter 1:14 KJV 1900
14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:
We read in Romans where it talks about:
Whereas you once yielded your members to unrighteousness, now yield them to righteousness...
Remember:
If we are a soul winning church, but not holy, what do we really have?
If we are a serving church, but not holy, what do we really have?
If we are a missions minded church, but we are not holy, what do we really have?

This week we turn our attention to 4 areas to be holy in:

Important truth to understand about personal holiness: we obtain holiness only through Christ...

1. In Separation

2 Corinthians 6:14–18 KJV 1900
14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? 15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? 16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, 18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
2 Corinthians 7:1 KJV 1900
1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
Romans 12:1–2 KJV 1900
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Leviticus 10:10 KJV 1900
10 And that ye may put difference between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean;

2. In Chastening

Chastening: to correct by punishment; to inflict pain for the purpose of reclaiming an offender; to purify from error or faults
Couple weeks ago “Don’t Mistake God’s Judgement for His Mercy
Heb. 12, verse 5 says to not despise the chastening of the Lord...
Vs. 6 says “For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.”
Vs. 7 - “if ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as son; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?”
Hebrews 12:8–10 KJV 1900
8 But if ye be without chastisement {education; training; disciplinary correction}, whereof all are partakers {implicate in the crime; an associate}, then are ye bastards {illegitimate son}, and not sons.
Chastening is necessary
Otherwise God is implicate in your sin of which He will not be
Think about Eli’s sons; Hophni and Phineas
1 Samuel 2:22–25 KJV 1900
22 Now Eli was very old, and heard all that his sons did unto all Israel; and how they lay with the women that assembled at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. 23 And he said unto them, Why do ye such things? for I hear of your evil dealings by all this people. 24 Nay, my sons; for it is no good report that I hear: ye make the Lord’s people to transgress.
Now look at God’s judgement on him:
1 Samuel 3:13 KJV 1900
13 For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.
Wasn’t it Hophni and Phineas who were laying with women, causing the sacrifices at the temple to be grievous and causing all sorts of issues?
But God said he restrained them not...
Eli had authority over his sons, he knew of their sin and did nothing about it… He was implicate in their sin of which God judged him for...
God will not be a participant in your sin by not chastening you...
Hebrews 12:8–10 KJV 1900
9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection {obedience; submission} unto the Father of spirits, and live?
Hebrews 12:8–10 KJV 1900
10 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure {what they seem to be right}; but he for our profit {to be better for; bring together}, that we might be partakers {to participate in} of his holiness.
God’s chastening is always for our gain...
He desires for us to be holy, but do so by obtaining holiness from Him...
How? Through chastening… He wants us to be “partakers of his holiness” which is done through chastening from the holy one...

3. In Conversation

1 Peter 1:15–16 KJV 1900
15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
2 Peter 3:11 KJV 1900
11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
True holiness comes from living like-Christ...
Through His example of holiness, we can become holy by being holy in all areas of our lives (all manner of conversation)...

4. In Reverence to Him

Exodus 3:5 KJV 1900
5 And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.
Joshua 5:15 KJV 1900
15 And the captain of the Lord’s host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.
This was the angel who came to Joshua before Jericho saying He would fight for them...
God speaking to Moses and Joshua was considered a holy thing by God...
So much so that He told them to remove their shoes because they’re standing on holy ground...
Do you treat your ability to communicate with God as something that is holy? (Sacred, sanctified, set apart)
Don’t treat your relationship with God with anything other than reverence...

5. In Service to Him

1 Corinthians 9:13–14 KJV 1900
13 Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar? 14 Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.
The Aaronic priests of Israel were to partake in a portion of the sacrifices at the temple...
The Holy One’s live of the holy things...
God has sanctified and set us apart at Salvation...
Now be holy by participating in His holy service...
You can be holy as God is holy by participating in what He deems holy, which is service to Him...
Joshua 24:19 KJV 1900
19 And Joshua said unto the people, Ye cannot serve the Lord: for he is an holy God; he is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions nor your sins.
You cannot serve God with your right hand while you hold your sin in your left hand… He is holy...
Ephesians 5:25–27 KJV 1900
25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
