The Word

James 1:21 NIV
humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.
the word initiates salvation
the word maintains salvation
Paul encourages Timothy to continue in the word
became convinced because of it
enables wisdom for the ongoing process of salvation

Listen to the Word

James 1:22 NIV
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
listening to the word is important
Romans 10:14 NIV
How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?
the word presents Jesus first and foremost
yet there has to be an outcome from hearing
you can hear about Jesus BUT
there has to be a belief that that word is true
the word also makes us wise for salvation

Deception Comes

be careful because deception is ever lurking
we must act upon the word given to us
when god’s word does not fit the world’s view
what do you choose to do?
is the truth of the word revealed diminished?

The Imperative

do what the word says
the word is active and alive
Hebrews 4:12 NIV
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
the word cannot be denied
it divides the spirit and the soul
the human spirit has been regenerated
the soul has to be regenerated to be godly

Attitudes of the Heart

the word judges the heart
we must be constantly allowing the word to get in deep
the word will cause discomfort, even offence
the carnal nature is being removed
it will not go quietly
but it has to go if we allow the word to do its work
James 1:23–24 NIV
Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.

Not Doing the Word

we must allow the word to do its work
let the Spirit do his work
John 14:26 NIV
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
will teach you ALL things
will remind you of everything

Forgetting Your Face

this is an interesting imagery
someone looks at his face
usually every morning
do we see the new man renewed daily?
or do we see the same ?
the face of a renewed man is memorable
the face of carnality is forgettable
James 1:25 NIV
But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.
the face of Jesus is memorable

The Perfect Law

John 14:23 NIV
Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching.
Jesus is the perfect law
he has fulfilled the law in his person
there is complete freedom when we are obedient to Jesus

Freedom

John 8:32 NIV
Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
John 8:36 NIV
So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

Doing It

whatever it takes, do it
read the word, hear the word
listen and understand
put the word into action
be transformed by the word to be more like Jesus
blessings will come
Ephesians 1:16–19 NIV
I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.
