Luke 16:14-31
Luke 16:14-31
welcome
Good morning, church!
Turn to your neighbor and say, “Forever is a long time.”
Today, we’re diving into one of Jesus’ most sobering teachings—a passage that challenges us to consider the eternal impact of our daily choices.
our passage is found in luke 16:14-31
recap where we are and what we learned last week
The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all these things, and they ridiculed him. And he said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.
“The Law and the Prophets were until John; since then the good news of the kingdom of God is preached, and everyone forces his way into it. But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one dot of the Law to become void.
nothing surprising here, Pharisees like money, and want more of it then they do of God
use illustration of coffee cup, polishing the outside not caring about the inside…
we also see Jesus isnt canceling the law, he is fulfilling it = The same God who had worked through Moses was working through Jesus. Therefore, not the least stroke of a pen would drop out of the Law; it would all be fulfilled.
John the Baptist’s ministry was the dividing line between the Old and New Testaments
Up until his time, the only revelation of God available to people came through the Law and the Prophets.
But since that time, that is, since John’s and Jesus’ arrival, the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached.
Yet, that Good News was the culmination of all that the Law demanded and the Prophets foresaw.
Nothing had changed with Jesus’ coming, and those who recognized his true identity realized that the kingdom had come and were forcing their way into it, so desiring to be part of it.
preach, religion says look the part, a relationship with christ says live the part!!
look at Luke 16.15
And he said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.
PREACH
then there is this passage dropped on us, he is talking about money and then brings up wife's...
“Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.
jesus came to fulfill the law, moses addressed divorce in Deut 24 and so Jesus, letting the pharisees, who care so much about the law, until it applies to them that is, had a big debate going
talk and relate to modern schools, there at this gathering, pharisees from both schools,
Divorce was a hot topic of debate among the Shammai and Hillel schools of the Pharisees.
The followers of Rabbi Hillel said a man could divorce his wife for almost any reason, even finding another woman more attractive than his wife.
The followers of Rabbi Shammai believed that a man could divorce his wife only if she had been unfaithful to him.
Jesus is letting those around know, yet again, that he didnt come to abolish the law but to fulfill it
Through this statement about divorce, Jesus was showing the unbelieving religious leaders that his words do not violate the law.
He also wanted to point out to them their hypocrisy in attempting to keep the letter of the law while failing to fulfill its moral obligations.
Kingdom standards are built upon that foundation and are, in many cases, even higher than the demands of the law.
That is because kingdom people do not have to obey the standards in order to get in; they merely need to trust in Jesus and allow the Holy Spirit to work in their lives. Then they can grow to become the people God wants them to be.
So jesus talked about the law, and addressed an important topic of debate that he just dropped the mic on…
and then we get to another Rich man, you catching the theme here??
being rich does not solve all your problems…
in this passage two contrasting characters
a rich man living in luxury
a poor man suffering and neglected
when jesus spoke these parables he did so so we can better understand, be relatable, put our selves in there shoes…
“There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried, and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’ But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.’ And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father’s house— for I have five brothers—so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’ But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’ ”
preach on this…
translation of Lazarus = God, the helper, meaning he probably depended on God to fulfill all his needs, even if it came in the form of scraps…
It’s not about how you start; it’s about how you finish.
Your earthly status doesn’t determine your eternal state.
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Preach it!!
And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father’s house— for I have five brothers—so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’ But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’ ”
they might say its aliens, remember moses or the law and prophets is the old testament,
We often look for signs, but God’s Word is sufficient. Are we listening?
Every decision we make echoes in eternity. How we treat others, how we respond to God’s Word—it all matters.
Don’t let comfort lull you into complacency.
Live with urgency, live with purpose, live with eternity in mind.
Examine your heart: What are you truly living for?
Embrace God’s Word: Let it guide your life.
Extend compassion: Care for those in need.
True faith manifests in love and obedience.
It’s not mere belief; it’s transformative.
Its about our eternity, wheres your heart??
Cause ill tell you this, Jesus is all you need church!!!
For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.
Jesus is not just enough—He is the fullness of God, and we are complete in Him.
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.
Jesus satisfies the deepest hunger of our souls.
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
With the Lord as our Shepherd, we have everything we need.
And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
Jesus supplies every true need, not according to our limitations but His abundance.
Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
His presence is our greatest possession—and He never leaves us.
his word is more than enough Our Lord is all we need this morning and if you believe that with me i want you to shout a praise offering to our God this morning!!
Preach
Don’t Trade Eternity for Temporary
Church, let’s not be like the rich man—consumed by the temporary and blind to the eternal.
Let’s be people who live with forever in mind, who value God’s truth over worldly treasures.
If you’ve been living for the temporary, it’s time to turn.
Embrace God’s Word, extend His love, and live for eternity.
PREACH IT!!!!
HOLY SPIRIT TAKE OVER AND BRING IT!!!!!
