U - Unconditional Election
L - Limited Atonement
I - Irresistible Grace
P - Perseverance of the Saints
Perseverance of the Saints
Teaching that true believers will remain faithful until the end. Anyone who continues in sin were never actually believers to start with. Also teaches that some believers may appear to have lost their faith when in fact they haven’t.
John 3:16
John 5:24
Philippians 1:6
Romans 8:29-30
John 10:28-30
I Peter 1:4-5
But the question is whether the Bible actually teaches this?

Life of David

List some individuals in the Bible that seem to no doubt be going to Heaven? Looking for David. Hebrews 11:32; I Samuel 13:14
David transported the ark in the incorrect way, Huzzah died
David was a poor father who had very rebellious children.
Took a census of Israel for prideful reasons, causing a 3-day plague that killed 70k people.
Bathsheba - lust, adultery, conspiracy, and murder
Does this sound like someone wholly dedicated to God and a man after God’s own heart? So he did he make it into the Hall of Faith?
I Kings 15:4-5
But Uriah and Bathsheba was not the only sin that David committed, so what was different about that sin?

Types of Sin

Does the Bible indicate that there are types of sin or degrees of sin?
What are some types of sin?
Ignorance
I Timothy 1:12-14
The problem is misunderstanding.
Weakness
Romans 7:15-20
Do you ever have a time when you know what you are doing in wrong, but it’s like in a knee jerk reaction you sin? Maybe lying to keep yourself out of trouble.
Presumptuous
Psalm 19:13
Numbers 15:30-31
Deuteronomy 17:12-13
II Peter 2:10
What sin is a presumptuous sin?
Any sin can be presumptuous. It has to do with the person and not the sin.
It’s when we know what we are doing is sin, but we do it anyway.
Say “I know what the Bible says, but...” This should never be said!
You basically thumb your nose at God, and basically say, “I don’t care.”

Walking in the Light

I John 1:5-7
Walk in the light - saved; walk in darkness - lost
So what does it mean to walk in the light? If we sin, does that mean we are walking in darkness?
I John 1:8 - so how can we walk in the light if sinning is walking in darkness, and we all sin.
Walking in the light means you are not living a life of sin, and you are striving to please Christ.
Of the categories of sin, which one can’t be part of Walking in the Light?
presumptuous sin - that’s because you know you are doing wrong and do it anyway...you are no longer trying to please Christ.
But can’t any sin be a sin of ignorance?
Sins of Ignorance - Can you always claim ignorance and simply never learn? That’s not trying to please Christ. That’s presumptuous.
Sins of Weakness - Can you claim weakness your entire life? That’s not trying to please Christ. That’s presumptuous.
I Kings 15:4-5
David’s sin with Bathsheba and Uriah, he was committing presumptuous sin. He knew what he was doing was wrong. Maybe it started as a sin of weakness and lusting after Bathsheba. At what point did he go from Walking in the Light to Walking in Darkness? We can’t know. Only he and God can.
Once David started walking in darkness, he lost his salvation. But he turned back to God and repented of his sin, and began walking in the light again. If he had died while walking in darkness, he would have lost his salvation.
The same is true for us. Once we start to talk in darkness, that’s the point our salvation is lost.
This is also why Once Saved Always Saved is a false doctrine.
