Psalm 74:12–17 “Yet God my King is from of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth. You divided the sea by your might; you broke the heads of the sea monsters on the waters. You crushed the heads of Leviathan; you gave him as food for the creatures of the wilderness. You split open springs and brooks; you dried up ever-flowing streams. Yours is the day, yours also the night; you have established the heavenly lights and the sun. You have fixed all the boundaries of the earth; you have made summer and winter.”

So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel. For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will. For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
Sermon
Sermon
Speaking to the pharisees, priests & scribes
Following the healing at the healing pool
Jesus had affirmed himself as the Son of God
So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.
Truely, Truely (Amen, Amen or verily)
Jesus responds to the indignation from the Jewish leaders at his claim to be the Son of God
Jesus hammers the point home
He also addresses the accusation of whether he has disobeyed the Father by healing on the Sabbath
Jesus affirms that he can do nothing of his own will
He can only fulfil the Father’s Will
Jesus also affirms that his work stems entirely from the Father.
For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel. For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will.
Son’s were their father’s apprentice
What greater love does a father have but to teach his son
all he knows
to live a good life
to carry out his fathers trade
Jesus is effectively saying “I have the right to say this for, being the Son, I know my Fathers love”
Jesus draws attention to His Father shows him all that he himself is doing
Those works will be far greater than healing
He will raise the dead & will stand in judgement
For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, that all may honuor the Son, just as they honour the Father. Whoever does not honour the Son does not honour the Father who sent him.
The father judges no one
He has given all judgement to the Son
The father always works through the Son
That all may honour the Son
Just as they honor the Father
“Whoever does not honour the Son does not honour the Father who sent him.”
Jesus teaching here in John, is entirely in keeping with the vision of Revelation
First ressurection - the soul
“the hour is coming. and is now here”
In the act of conversion the “dead hear the voice of the Son of God”
In culmination, through physical death has life with Christ in heaven
Second ressurection - physical in character
All will be raised: both believers and unbelievers
No time difference is indicated anywhere (either in John’s or Paul’s writings)
Believers are raised to reign forever with Christ
Unbelievers are cast into the lake of fire
“He who hears my word and believes”
“Believes Him who sent me”
Such an individual “has everlasting life”
This is not a moral decision (turning over a new leaf)
It is a transformation of the entire personality, through which all morals as changed
God the Father has within himself eternal life
Jesus, the Son, has inherited this life in himself
Jesus is able to grant this eteneral life to His Elect
“He has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man”
Jesus judges because he knows what it is to be human
Thoroughly aquainted with human thoughts, words, and actions
Jesus’ makes it clear that the Jewish Leaders have no right to condemn him for healing this man at the pool on the sabbath
Jesus could not heal unless it had been expressly approved by the Father
To oppose him would be to directly oppose God himself
Moreover, their very eternal state rests entirely n their response to Jesus
